A close look at the 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack's dashboard

[MUSIC] The 2017 Volkswagen Golf Altrek is available with some really cool tech features. Things like on board navigation, a premium Fender audio system, and automatic parallel parking. But we don't have any of those things and that's because this is base S model with no option boxes checked. But that's okay, cuz that gives us an opportunity to take a really close look at Volkswagen's base car net infotainment and see how good it is. And I got to say it's better than a lot of audio systems. [MUSIC] The driver tech we're dealing with a standard review camera and not much else. So you put the car into reverse And you get this view out of the back of the vehicle. It's not a great view but it is very wide. You've got these trajectory lines that show you distance but they don't move when you turn the steering wheel. But one cool feature is that the camera does pop out from beneath the VW logo out back. So it stays clean even when the rest of the car gets dirty. [MUSIC] Now the rest of the infotainment is pretty much standard affair Car-Net that we've seen in a bunch of other VW vehicles. You got this dark home screen, with these icons that you can slide around to get to the various functions. You'll notice that on a lot of these screens you have these shortcut buttons along the bottom. If you take your hands away from the screen for a while, they'll shrink down and get out of the way. But there's an infrared sensor. So as your hand approaches, they get larger so they're easier to hit. Now we don't have on board navigation spec, but that's okay. That's because every Car-net unit comes standard with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and MirrorLink connectivity You just plug your smartphone in with a usb connection and you have access to the Google maps and Apple maps that you'll need to get to where you're going. You also gain access to a lot of the digital streaming audio apps on your smartphone for things like podcasts and music access in addition to the onboard audio sources. Things like satellite radio, usb connectivity, and Bluetooth hands free calling. Now overall, I find this is a very good system. It's very responsive, very easy to use and it has a lot of the features that I like to see. Actually, this base system is a lot better than a lot of car makers upgrade it to display audio systems.
