Gates on how XP changed computing
Speaker 1: When you look back at Windows xp, what do you think the biggest change in computing that XP brought?
Speaker 2: Well, XP uh, was part of this explosion of the Windows PC to the center of, of a lot of experiences. You know, before XP came along, portables were a very small percentage of what people did. And so as we put the wireless capability in there, the standard stack in there, the, uh, you know, we, we [00:00:30] did some things that let, uh, wifi really take off in a big way that let portable computers take off. We did much better car management and XP than we'd ever done before. And so could we have had this portable explosion? No, we couldn't have. Vista takes that to the next degree because portables are, are growing, and that's even before you get to some of the, the more breakthrough things like tablet or, uh, the small ultra mobile type form factor. And so we can look back on every Windows release and say it [00:01:00] ushered in something new here.
Speaker 2: You know, you could say it ushers in 64 bit. Uh, you know, that's just a standard capability of these Vista SKUs is having 64 bit capability end users shouldn't have to think about that, but it's certainly at the server level and advanced scenarios, people are starting to push the limits. And so if you don't relieve that memory pressure, people start to do very complex things like they did when we, uh, pushed the, the original, uh, 80, 86 limits, and now we've completely [00:01:30] avoided that. So there's quite a list issue could pick, uh, a lot of them have to do with new scenarios that were never being done before. You know, r s s and the platform. At the time of xp, nobody knew what that was, why that was a big deal. Now, you know, I sit in IE. And I mark things, uh, and they just show up in Outlook. I take that for granted.
