GameSpot's The Lobby: Are you going to buy PlayStation VR?

Gaming Hardware
Virtual reality is coming, whether you like it or not, internet. Playstation virtual reality. Ain't no Morpheus no more, and our panel here. Are you going to be taking a blue pill or the red pill of virtual reality. Alexa, cross your leg, cross you leg the other way. There you go. [LAUGH] [CROSSTALK] Now we're killing it, now we're killing it. Playstation VR. Playstation VR We've been talking about VR for feels like [INAUDIBLE] Yeah Couple of years at least but we're sort of on the, it's on the horizon. [CROSSTALK] Everyone's on the hook now, Everyone's kinda Yep thrown down Like this is one [INAUDIBLE] our thing So we're getting real close. Yeah. I'm getting excited. We don't have a price yet, but I think we're at the stage now people are kind a deciding whether or not they're gonna be picking up a virtual reality headset. And with PlayStation experience and sort of seeing all the games that they rolled out I think a lot of people, especially forerunners, are thinking, oh am I gonna Be putting money aside for a couple of months and then taking up on Playstation VR's. And let's talk about some of the games as shown first of all at the conference. Peter, what were some of the ones that jumped out to you. Ribs was by far the most interesting one. [CROSSTALK] Yeah. And I hate to beat a dead horse, but as someone who loves the Dreamcast and loves Ribs in particular. And love EVE- Valkyrie, I see a lot of the things in EVE-Valkyrie mimics in [UNKNOWN] Inifnite which is like using the direction that you're looking to sort of [UNKNOWN]. And that's perfect, it works so well. It ties one to one, and that's the sort of things you want in virtual reality. You want it to mimic what you're doing in real life. Maybe I'm not flying through a simulated computer space thing filled with neon colors. But, I can at least feel like I am when I'm aiming in that direction. Yeah I love that and I love that they give you the flexibility within it. Because some people were using just the head for the radical, I was using the right stick because that's what I'm used to and they both work equally well. What's great is they work together in tandem in a really interesting way so if I'm trying to lock on and then I do one of those things like I did in the old [UNKNOWN] where I look over In the corner of my eye, and I'm just like oh no, I forgot to lock on to that guy. Just by looking over to him, I've locked on. And so it makes the whole thing just like much quicker, much easier. You [UNKNOWN] does the same thing. You get to use it to like lock on to ships. So if you're flying forward and the ship goes by, you're like hold on. I'm gonna lock on. Boop. Got you. [LAUGH] Yeah, it's just sort of like That analog to what you would do in the real world. And I mean, that aesthetic, like I keep saying, it's such a simple aesthetic which works wonderfully in VR. Everybody wants to build this crazy, realistic city that you can walk around in. And the hardware's just not there yet. Early VR is gonna be all about good art direction, and that's something [UNKNOWN] has always had. It looks like it hasn't aged a day when you look at it. There's something about that design aesthetic that Rez put into it that's just brilliant and fresh today, the same way it was in 2001. Well, it's interesting because we're so used to seeing these one to one, one of the biggest problems of VR is how do you move around? You get people to move around. If they can't move around, In their space do we have it so that they use a controller or do we have it so you lean forward and you can move around in spaces that way. Yeah. Whereas like actually you can make lots of different VR experiences that aren't one to one matches with you being in a human body. Well that's something that Tim Schaeffer was talking about because you know Psychonauts VR The Rhombus of Ruin was one of the big announcements. Yeah. And he was talking about how it will not be a traditional game where you're moving around. It's going to use Raz's psychic powers and maybe you're jumping from one person's head to another and that's how you get around. They're going to fall back on their adventure game pedigree and make it very much dialog based and story based and I think that's going to work so wonderfully. It's interesting like how you were talking earlier about how you can [UNKNOWN] Try a lot of VR because you get motion sick, but you didn't weirdly enough with Rez, which kind of feels like a game that's throwing you around quite a lot. So I've never heard the [UNKNOWN] before, and my last, Playstation VR. Playstation VR. [LAUGH] And my last experience was maybe almost two years ago. I played an Occulus at an event, I got to play [UNKNOWN], and just got Violently ill. Yeah. Like I get motion sick from first person shooters if I'm not careful. You ever seen Cloverfield? That movie made me motion sick. Then you're gonna love Cloverfield VR. But I played, so I played Red and I don't know if its because maybe it wasn't like a oh here are my hands here is my body and I'm just doing it. But I actually go really brave, I did the head tracking and I used. The head. And at one point, there was like a lull in the music. And I looked down and it's just the tracks going by me. And it's a little disorienting. But I didn't get sick. And I'm very excited now because maybe it's like I don't know if it's like red in particular or the fact that it's third person or the fact that the Playstation VR is comfortable. And I don't feel disoriented. I don't know if It's that, but I feel like a whole new world has been opened up to me now because I've been avoiding it for so long. [UNKNOWN] it works. It's strange with so much of what've seen, it seems like they're figuring it out. Yeah Like over the past two years or longer we've seen. Like iterations on this technology and it feels like for useability sake and also like the types of games we're seeing. It's all sort of clicking into place. Yeah, what I've noticed, what I've noticed and I just Kind of clicked with me now after hearing Alexis say this is the things that are working the best for me are things where you're either some sort of body or object free-floating, or you're locked to one space like in job simulator where you're sitting at a desk Because you kind of get around that whole like, why does it look like I'm walking but I'm not walking? Why does my body wanna vomit more than anything ever in the world right now? I had so much fun with Job Simulator. Like, obviously, you know, the time and experience, it probably isn't too much fun to play over and over and over again. But like, Just the, you know, I wonder will this work? And then it works. I picked up the plants and put it in the coffee machine and I found this disc and I put it in to the computer and it ended up being like a flappy bird clone got loaded on. Whoa. Kind of like [CROSSTALK] I just love your idiot baby hands. Just like Mashing on the keyboard there. [LAUGH] [CROSSTALK] Oh, it's Mary that has baby hands. [LAUGH] But then on the other side, Looking good, Mary, is what I meant to say. [LAUGH] There you go. There's the idiot baby I was talking about. [LAUGH] And on the other side of that room, I played [UNKNOWN], and I played it, and I don't know the racing games of VR And actually that kind of felt like it didn't really work, it felt like it was. You don't need, well here's the thing. Everybody thinks that racing is gonna be like the perfect natural fit, and it sort of is, but it's also the thing that needs VR the least, because you're sort of always looking forward keeping your eye on the track and what's going on, so it was very rare that I actually used any head tracking in [INAUDIBLE] Like in most racing, this [UNKNOWN] you're like there are wind mirrors within eye flicking relay or [UNKNOWN] of where your focal point is. Yeah. I think the impressing thing about the drive club demo was they were showing off how far The Playstation VR headset has come since that initial prototype the same way they're showing of how far the Oculus has come and things like that. As they're raising these framerates and these refresh rates and everything is getting brighter and the headtracking is getting more one to one, They're just trying to show off hey we can do an experience like this now and it will not make Alexa Raycoria vomit. Yeah. [LAUGH] Much. It's comfortable to do, isn't it? [LAUGH] Like not you, Peter, I feel like of all the people at Gamespot you have used VR the most and you're the most experienced user in all the different iterations of these, how do you think that Playstation VR headset feels? Cuz to me it's like It's so light, it feels super easy to move on your head and everything? Yeah, as these things develop, obviously the materials get refined, they realize they don't need as much circuit board. They can find later materials that wick away moisture and stuff and things become more comfortable. And I think some people will always find something to complain about. The Morpheus is really comfortable. Yeah. The Oculus is really comfortable, even the latest gear vr, I mean. People are iterating on these pretty quickly and coming up with solutions Yeah, but that's a really poor demo. Those poor guys. Yeah. That's the bam, there it is That was not, this does not go well for them. No, and you know, if you look at how fast it's progressed already over the past three years, project ten years down the road, right? Right. I mean, these things will continue to shrink, continue to be more comfortable. We are at the frontier of VR Even now still after years of doing this stuff hasn't hit market really. It's not really gone mainstream and gotten the money to keep making more things and keep refining it so it's just gonna get smaller and more comfortable. So even though it's not perfect right now, don't discount it. Some of the early experiences are great and they totally make up for a little bit of discomfort because you're getting an experience Unlike anything you've played on a traditional TV with a controller. I think tha's great point. I think it can make it through this first three or four years. If these companies could really stick it out, keep supporting it, don't pull money out of it the way they pulled money out of a Kinect or a Move or something like that. As long as they don't get bored and see the profits kinda not coming in for the first three or four years I think this is something that could really catch on. But they're going to have to commit to backing. The thing is with most people now at least in our groups, alright we talk about this as a game first device but VR is being utilized and I guess I've said this a lot of time, I feel like I'm repeating myself. But it's used for therapy a lot. Like burn victims heal faster walking through snow in VR. PTSD people are able to overcome these memories that haunt them by reliving them in a different context. So those are the sort of things. And even airlines, like putting VR in the seats, those are the sort of things that are gonna support the VR [UNKNOWN]. Yeah. Games will then benefit as a result. I would be shocked if it didn't continue down the road it's already going. I mean, to see somebody like Samsung jump in bed with With Occulus, you know, and the Facebook owning Occulus, like those are two big powerhouses. They are not just going to get their toes wet. Sure. And say it's cold. They are going to jump in full force and will continue to do so. Well I think that's interesting because that brings up like Sony, I mean Sony obviously is thinking about this in terms of movies, entertainment and games. But they're sort of, they're not on the forefront of like those same sort of things that you're talking about. With these research companies where it's like- Right. well they don't really put money into things like therapies and that sorts of stuff. Yeah. So they're maybe the company that has the most to lose but also I think has the best chance of getting a toe hold in the consumer market- Yeah. because I'm not going to have to have a high-end PC .>> To do it. Yeah. The box is already in my living room. These games already run to spec. Without me having to fiddle with anything the way you have to with an Oculus or anything right now. So they have the, they have a big chance to kind of take the living room, which I think is kind of interesting. And you can really see from like all their PSX presentations that they really want the living room. They want it so bad right now. [CROSSTALK] Thirsty for that living room. Curious to see what Valve does now that they've started their whole Steam machine initiative. Although it's not taken off very well, how far are they from having a box that they think should end up being, this is the Valve VR box. Yeah. That will sort of get rid of all the high end PC stuff. Really developers just have to aim for a certain spec like they are doing with as you described with Playstation 4. I could see HTC cornering the PC market with Valves help. Down the road, that could be something that works out really well for them and for gamers in general. I love that we're talking about all these lofty technology goals and everything like that and all I wanna do is play 100 foot robot golf with the thing. Yes [CROSSTALK] I love it when we talk about this, we start projecting five or ten years in the future and it feels like there's so much Not optimism, but people are fighting for VR in a way that they didn't with Kinect and Move. Like people Yeah, or even 3D. Yeah, more people, they want it to work, so, sort of real talk, 2016 Playstation VR comes out, I know we're maybe skewed a little bit because we're people who do this professionally, but Who's going to buy one? Are you going to get one yourself?>> It didn't make me barf, so probably. I liked it.>> That's actually the top of her scale. Her scale goes from fainting and vomiting to didn't make me barf.>> It didn't make me barf and I'm excited about that because everyone's talking about PR. You guys all come back from shows and it's like oh I played this I played that and I'm like Well, I would have barfed trying to play it. You didn't want to be left out of that conversation? Right. So, I wonder if there's going to be enough people who buy this who then, you know, that early adoptive thing, where they push everyone else's thoughts. I'm going to have three headsets in my house by the end of next year. Do you really think you will? I really am going to have three Headsets in my house, I'm an idiot. [LAUGH] I would do it, I love it that much. But you don't know which one Porn Hub's gonna go with. Right? You gotta Until I know, cuz I wanna play robot golf But I also want to get up on that. [LAUGH] Porn head. Robot something else. Yesterday, Razer, cuz they have their own open source VR headset. Okay. The CEO of Razer [UNKNOWN]. Now, I'm not saying I'm supporting porn out of the box. But I am saying there is a native app for the only VR porn producer out there. Wow. On our device. Out of the box. Four headsets, Danny! [LAUGH] Out of the box. Four I'm going to have now. I got it. I got it. [LAUGH] Peter, I'm assuming you'll probably jump in on a bunch of them. Yeah. I mean, I'm Yes. I think I even though I am really passionate about it I will probably go for the easiest solution first. Mm-hm. Samsung DVR is great but I don't really like Samsung phones. Right. So for me it will probably be Playstation VR. I have the PS4 and I like some of the demos that they've put out. I will have a riff in time but in time is the key word. So do we think the Playstation 4 owners are going to pick this up because by the time this comes out we will be 2 and half coming up to three years after our console has come out. Maybe it'll take the sting out of Of having to spend whatever it is they ask. Yeah exactly. Yeah. Cuz people are grading you for the next best thing and if it's not gonna come for another seven years? Right. Right. Yeah. Like why wouldn't they? It's all gonna be about price point though. Yeah. I think it's all gonna be about price point. They can't release it for less than like 300 [INAUDIBLE] Oh no they could. They could easily subsidize it.>> All rice you think?>> I think so.>> But would they?>> Yes.>> That's the big question. You think so?>> I think they will.>> To get people to [CROSSTALK] The only way this is really going to catch fire is if people are at their friends house and using it. Right? So if Sony can't get this into people's hands.>> Right.>> They're not going to be able to market it so well with a commercial. It's going to be experiencing it because I've Talk to people about VR a thousand times, and it's not until like, you tried that demo at GameStop that you were like, oh wow, okay. And me and Andy [UNKNOWN] went into that room, the sort of VR room that they had for the press. And he's kind of like, he gets hot and cold on this sort of stuff. And when he put the headset on he came over and went, you know what I like? We watched videos of people like, playing VR all the time, like this stuff. He's like, we're gonna just shoot more B roll of this stuff. And it doesn't really put it across. Yeah. He was like I put the head set on I was like oh yeah sorry. Yeah. I remember, this is **** amazing. But you know the big thing that really made me go all in at PSX was we're finally seeing games. Yeah, I've seen a lot of demos of pick up the thing and you're in a forest and look around, and it's like no. This is a game. And a lot of them. Yeah. It feels like now I'm at the stage where I can't name all the video games that are coming out on Playstation's [UNKNOWN] platform. And that's important cuz I think people were seeing it as this long term tech demo and now it's kinda like Yeah. 100 foot robot golf. I get it. Did you know you can pick up stuff and put it in the photocopier and it made duplicates? [LAUGH] I have like, 50 donuts by the end of this game. What? No, wait a minute. Wait a minute. Yeah. [LAUGH] [CROSSTALK] [LAUGH] Tea Earl Gray. Bad time to have diabetes. [LAUGH] Virtual reality, there you go. Four to four thumbs up for you know, maybe eight we can go, here on the couch. Let us know what you think of VR. Do you want a PlayStation 4? Are you gonna pick up a PlayStation VR yourself and watch the right price point. Let us know in the comments below. [MUSIC]
