Everyone I'm -- needle in live at CES 2011 this is reporters' roundtable are looking weekly show -- a single tech topic today that tech topic of course.
Is let's look forward to in 2011.
The last -- we did of course was wrapping up 2010 but here at CES we're starting the year as we always do with a look forward.
And to talk about that -- -- that three great guests who become into the show.
Probably as long or longer than I have first in my right Jim -- back with the over vision three Jim thanks for joining us to be here thank you Harry McCracken who runs the great web site blog technology -- thank you.
And finally -- -- --
Analyst for the Android group. These guys know what's up.
We've been to and between us I think we probably have about sixty years of CES experience which is too much.
All right so based on that we've been coming here for a while what was the big deal at the show Jim we'll start with the what's the big deal here.
So the big deal from my perspective the Android tablets -- -- rolling -- and of those of in the although it's like everybody and their monkey as an Android -- today.
But the interesting product to me the one of the biggest one is from Motorola interestingly enough.
And they've come out with a product called the -- but it's an accident -- of the honeycomb version of Android but I really like it because it actually the first one I've seen that has the potential.
To unseat Apple's -- you really think so I do one want because -- an optimist and I think somebody's gonna I also think that there are so many of these pads.
That they're all you ask him how much like we're gonna be priceless -- with the iPad will have to last about three months and we're certain -- him that 25300.
So the price drop will mean there will be a lot more Android tablets sold.
In the next by 2012.
Then. -- -- Apple iPad as Apple's -- with the phones.
-- you before I got -- would've thought it would be either 3-D or cap looks but.
It's cars has long been have been coming to see us have usually been really disappointed by the -- called because the car companies seem to be about a decade behind everybody else.
But Audi and BMW and Florida and GM and Toyota are actually all doing cool things including both.
-- spilled into the dashboard but also integration with Smartphones given that we all have these high speed computers in her pockets they're -- working with the but the dashboard.
-- media at the Booth right out there that has that giant BMW and Tesla prototype and it.
And in videos showing cars.
Though there about that -- -- and finally arrive and do it well the big thing for me that if they showed the model PC geek was the fact that Microsoft was breaking up to Intel alliance and movement arm.
That was one of those.
Okay the world just changed moment so it's it's got a lot of -- players now plans phases -- -- -- -- and clearly Intel's been trying to move and a Smartphones in the re arrest and now it now it's a race man.
You know let's get into that little it's a little bit geeky but -- -- -- get into that the chip battle that I saw unfold here on press conference today.
On Wednesday I went to the Intel press conference -- they talk about sandy bridge which is obviously better stronger faster primarily in graphics.
So it's going to it looks like. Haven't.
-- serious number on the graphics card market except in the high end.
Taken on Nvidia and edit with the Nvidia conference in and it says we're partnering with arbitrate the he has yet to have these two guys switching --
And if they're both good and about the same thing about creating these hybrid parts that are CP U's GPUs of that processing in the graphics together come up the next class apart except until courses thing -- X 86.
Core and their background and Nvidia's Japanese arm kind of ahead of though the move.
Of Microsoft's move to look at that -- probably -- of the reasons Microsoft make the -- the we we got a -- we weren't expecting to -- -- -- -- -- Intel and --
-- right back in the middle of it back we're kind of thinking that maybe that'd ditty was going to be like the guy would when the music stopped this would -- without a chair has.
AMD and Intel were actually going down this lockout strategy in Nvidia's of the back -- it.
I think this means the consumer technology.
Well for me I think what we're gonna see is with in this race it's really a drive towards the handheld devices that are most interesting.
And the LG phone that Nvidia showed off vote with their tegra two chip.
Really cool great processing power but I think it's all about price.
And I think that all of this is going to drive down the basic cost of -- Smartphone.
-- under fifty bucks to build which means that Smartphones in the year going to be under a hundred dollars and people are gonna -- them all over the place.
-- that's gonna be really great for network capacity isn't it.
Everybody's gonna have a Smartphone and in -- few months and they're gonna be no more.
Feature phones -- what does this mean for the carriers and for our ability to get or not get a signal.
And be more devices than ever and even if there's more bandwidth I think that than the increase in devices will outstrip the banned weapons.
You Verizon talked about their four -- roll -- -- coming and they were also with it was LT was talk about this phone.
The super phone what is a super phone I used to Smartphones aren't anything to me well.
What makes this super phone is that it's it's got a combination of technologies that are step up Steve moved from single -- dual core member one of the biggest complaints -- had on some the phones that come out click here early -- with the -- -- multitask properly.
Primarily because they're still single core processors on PCs.
We moved to dual core.
About halfway through the last decade Superfund means you get twin land that cores which means you can you can better multitasking runs up the let's in the music.
While you're doing your mail much better and then of course with the four -- radios T get better throughput -- it and it opens up that particular bottleneck and invariably it's got at least one more thing like up a better display. Battery life boot after something else around it -- to jump across two or more areas to a MacBook that's what makes that is separate phone.
This particular year.
Like the return of the brunt of the -- of the super phone and for a bit.
Whatever happens beyond that apparently. The mega for the megaphone hello everybody her back between.
All right so now the thing about all these Smartphones -- super phones we saw and I believe.
In order to. Get on stage.
At -- press conference.
There were a -- -- -- -- two of three requirements here yet either do a Smartphone a tablet or 3-D TV.
And I every -- -- that went to their word two or three of those things.
Let's -- it appeared to me that this show although nobody's really been talking about so much its Android show.
One of the big unanswered questions of the show as we still don't know what Microsoft wants to do with tablet interfaces because they talked about.
Putting windows on arm which is very important.
But the interest in staff as what happens of the windows interface to -- -- -- -- that Microsoft tried doing a very slight modification of windows for tablet last year.
And it went nowhere. And they're clearly working on something that -- gonna talk about yet they wanted to drop that surprised.
Her eyes got all the time and ends up being something that's not really -- -- -- -- can't yet but that's the drug's side you know one of these are really like to do is walk around us the foreign to the North Pole where all the little booths from China.
From Hong Kong and other players or -- showing off the things that have gone from.
-- big roll -- to we're making a really really cheap so we can send them all over the world and for the first time like you said about Android there's Android all over the place there if that Android tablets the little -- robot in the background so yeah it's definitely Android show and the the fact that it is going into these you know relatively inexpensive processing factories in China means that it's gonna be ubiquitous and it's gonna -- you.
-- well that I was detect got -- -- in terms of the interface for windows data in the tablet notice that they always win even in the press event they went directly from the tablets to service.
That's surface technology with.
The LCD that can actually be a camera that's scalable down to tablet size.
And of course the company that's behind it is -- infect I would of argued it it's not an -- show it's a Samsung focus where every turn surface.
At Samsung. The first family of MP3 player.
Phone tablet does not Apple that Samsung around here most is that using a sensor and and go to central hall and take a look at the Samsung Booth it's it looks like it's gonna take over the -- -- it's huge -- Sony used to be the dominant player.
Player in the in the space.
Away in the back all by themselves so -- that don't need your traffic like him at the (%expletive) somebody off -- I will say though that Sony is actually showing off some really interesting stuff and they are you know putting a lot of their focus on 3-D which -- -- really interesting and briefly review the point where -- at -- quarter where are its 2000 bucks but still.
A normal person can shoot -- I think that's gonna drive desire for -- you can actually show what -- --
It's all active shutter stuff so that site and for me that the passive is just is just a much better if you look at.
Passive is now being driven down and it ended -- a mother that TV guys out there that if you're the best that was that's that need to change.
-- set that did -- -- out for 35 otter box with passive 3-D and pretty much every technology including online unlike gaming built into the sat.
While one of these things bad --
You're gonna have the only -- on the block 32 inches thought that its -- by the entire block over its true.
Let's talk a little about TVs and 3-D as I said every press conference I went to 3-D TV and -- many of them.
3-D consumer cameras some of which were going to be -- for a lot less than.
Prosumer price as the -- -- that 2300 dollar three video cameras critical stuff if you like three.
Last year -- was also big -- year this year the Big Three years.
Though there -- numbers being thrown around that they're all these 3-D TVs out there of course a lot of them are 3-D capable.
Right so how important is 3-D going to be in 2011. Are we still hoping for this to take off.
Cause indigestion which is the content is not there and for reasons I don't quite understand.
Hollywood does not pushing out the stuff you wanna buy that they're pushing -- movies from two or three years ago if -- can't get toy story three you can get like bolt.
And that I don't understand why they wouldn't want to put the stuff out and let people buy -- Which would make buying a TV a lot more compelling evidence today.
It comes down the glasses and look you do not want to have to force people use glasses at home for most of the viewing -- you.
I can't even find my remote most of the time I'm Knoxville apartment plus.
-- on the news math classes straight into she about has class is free which is not good.
But it's also not all that much worse off the stuff with glasses they've seen -- -- a tiny bit more hopeful that may be that the notion of really -- -- and it does not require glasses is not an impossible dream.
But that's the in the glasses free 3-D I have I have not --
How to look like it but if you get thinner that that mean that -- as they say it's gonna it's gonna great for that eighteen year old -- -- closed his girlfriend who you gonna be really close and -- to watch that picture but for your every -- with the kids don't wanna -- close to each other it's gonna be a problem because the kids on both -- of the couch.
They're not gonna get it it good experience with its way to standard right now.
Our action -- anytime -- on this thing that's that the domino and we're continuing to work on this and not make sense.
Viewing angle problem was definitely -- -- you can seriously. Here.
Oh I missed -- over here so.
They're gonna have to work -- and will we be seeing -- tablets anytime soon.
-- -- -- -- --
Games and now Apple's games that tablets he believed to be treaty -- the got the -- series at one of the things deceive you see the new Android.
Laptops from Dell.
The high end ones all 3-D gorgeous set up but once in your brain -- -- the one place -- treaty does work as it is on gaming because people will buy accessories for gaming it's just a one up experience.
And actually it's not bad at first person shooter and three yet dun it slot occupied or global work craft and three -- that's gonna onto a S 61 -- -- set but what warcraft on the ball.
Here's the caps could snowball earth yesterday after a class -- it --
But here's the pro that I -- to back to the tablet arena for a bit we've really touched on it.
We saw a lot of companies and at the Android tablets we haven't yet seen -- pump tablet.
Authority got -- bill and if these other printer.
That would there was a tablet on the printer and -- supposed to be -- they really talk about what operating system was not be so that that easy share -- that the announcer the show.
That was sure a tablet is supposed to be the --
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --
So what the why not build a printer that Apple about it -- they got week.
We HP we can do that because we understand operators those got a cute it was all these Android tablets coming up from the standard vendors that we've got some interesting tablets.
Rim Blackberry were showing the their tablet here.
We've got -- the HP tablets coming.
And Motorola and Panasonic also announced the more than usual tablets spoke about those.
Anybody -- that the plus the usual blunt -- are looking forward to was the notion ink Adam which is built which is that which is kind of that next generation tablet that Scott pixel -- outdoor durable display.
Mean to me that tablet that he can't -- -- outside.
What that the point remember Microsoft on stage -- -- -- tablet at the Asus tablet that had a pop screen also dvds outside.
I don't I don't see much of a point and exit that you could hold you can read up when you -- with that all of them at least you can do it -- inside of the curtains closed.
Ever night I live out that it is not needed to overlook -- its active.
It's interesting with tablets is the hybrids that have sort of slide out keyboards or removable keyboards and yeah held at the Samsung look Lenovo -- updated -- you want it now let tablet.
Which is kind of a hybrid its a windows -- -- floor waxes dessert topping its Android.
And then there's you know -- got another with -- slide out keyboard so.
There's a lot of really enters its -- -- -- okay tablets are a good idea but if you wanna keyboard they've got on screen keyboard Clinton backed up his -- very.
I Korea about a big regular keyboard -- of one -- and I've got is that Dell venue pro that's that when this combination is the keyboard the drops underneath that.
I've I've stirred up of the HTC ended up with that -- -- I just can't live without a keyboard even on my Smartphone.
Okay so. -- a couple of about the vendors here rob you mentioned this with Samsung show there there are other vendors -- --
There are other vendors here. There's this other this is competing vendor that we haven't really talked about much.
-- some Microsoft if we get little bit of beginning. Where whereas Microsoft what are they doing at the show that that really matters.
Was after all these you may -- and the touch are not talking that they started talking about -- -- statement moved arm.
They showcase the new surface they showcase. The new connect the new lab pocket not connect product the -- that Xbox thing.
Is connect that it -- connected equity with the -- -- that part of struggling with us a little bit that the idea debt connect will not take a picture of your face.
And your avatar will change expressions is as YouTube which could be really good -- -- first person shooter but happy that good of you to eagerly as you do a chat thing.
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --
And you've been playing World of Warcraft has got for five kids all over the country they all play together they all go out and you know blow -- other people.
They've all been talking on -- that they've never seen each other.
So this Christmas they'll dock connector what do they do you haven't -- a little gave a little bit but really what they did was they picked up the cabinet.
Get me here -- -- all got to -- each other for the first time they would pick them -- here's my dog hears my -- has -- -- -- for Christmas is the view.
And so the idea is forget the avatars they're stupid if you just wanna have yourself your person your image that just has enough processing power to do that right now.
But -- I wanna pay out real shocking experience that you've been playing with somebody for long record time in the direct really attractive --
Female characters all the time you thought they were women -- -- finally meet them in person Arial got the -- like us is one of those wake up calls to make you realize that that everything you see on the screen as a real -- that -- best on the Internet nobody knows your dog and it I think that for from experience on the -- guy yet it back into the --
You're editor in chief of PC world for awhile and it's an interest is it is it unusual to -- a show like this and not see.
A real buzz around Microsoft products.
I mean that Microsoft. -- much to the Ballmer keynote.
And when Bill Gates to that he always laid out this very broad vision for the future.
The -- when was almost -- recap the lead over -- act.
And windows phones have done and various other stuff beneath.
Not other than putting windows -- arm which is kind of former McCain.
It was really looking backwards and away -- -- -- was -- -- them in the -- -- -- sat back and they probably are working on some stuff but they're -- everything -- talk about them.
Even though that's -- it was a good show for the PC.
In between Intel. And AMD and -- -- that's an interest in your PC audio stuff and now.
Between HP and Lenovo and a bunch of other companies and there ever been as many new PC is -- the us.
It's just that Microsoft is not driving the change anymore and that's the hardware companies are doing it and in some cases are doing it with operating systems other than windows.
Envision though a Mac can't get any of the pages they're really visionary most everybody's talking about what they've -- not about where we're at the market's going that -- Sony thing was particularly the right -- that and one of the things that that drives hardware is obviously -- but also content.
And we were talking about how you were talking a little bit about how this is Samsung show.
And not Sony's now it's the thing -- that Sony in addition to being a hardware company gradual that on the high end that is also content company which none of the other electronics companies are.
-- -- -- leverage it very well -- it almost seems to work against -- interpreted the MP3 players that a better looking MP3 player that Apple -- years before Apple had -- but -- couldn't get it to work that was so heavily DRM to -- you put music on -- you lost your laptop -- -- -- lost all your music to people -- gonna mess with that.
-- it's it's it's almost worked against them into the form I've never understood that.
Have you any -- folks talk -- any of the content copied but how they're dealing with connected TVs and a lot of TV's I think most TVs now.
With six of the ten vendor for example have Yahoo! on them.
That Yahoo! connected little -- things like Netflix to -- -- and most of now to Netflix and Blu-ray players.
Whether it's really good point and -- -- Revision 3 where -- work we are trying to be on all of our our goal is to be and we are already the number one over the top TV network independent TV network.
And I think that the interesting thing happening in that market is first ball.
Google TV not here -- it all the -- around a little bit. -- they rework that.
But it's really interesting to watch all of the sort of gyrations of what -- gonna look like and how of the TV vendors differentiate themselves.
We've got the Yahoo! connected TV stuff on six at a time.
But that's the same if not differentiation so we saw Boxee.
Putting themselves into the view sonic TV which I think adds real differentiation.
To view sonic because you've got a different software reload the government's got a little bit more of a social layer to it -- the -- connected stuff.
And I think we're gonna see more and more of whether it's LG or you know Samsung got their own platform.
But other folks adopting different formats and different interfaces a -- -- operating systems to differentiate themselves because.
Frankly most the TVs are not really very different capable.
This is that if this is an issue for the TV industry -- mean.
When digital television came out and it coincided with the that the lowering of prices of flat panel displays -- this gigantic resurgence in the heat in TV -- that's begun to taper off now TV companies it looks like they're trying to keep that momentum going but.
But can there them.
Want to buy a new TV every two to three years remember in the heyday of the PC we all bought new PCs every 23 years.
We are not gonna behind new TVs.
Every 23 hits off five to seven year -- -- actually argued more seven attend it if -- it is it is that it's a much longer cycle what you think can get somebody.
To upgrade a thing a four year old LTD or plasma.
And blame our hopes for it for Internet than 3-D.
Because media is ultimately -- -- -- -- again Mac.
And if they -- the Internet which is up a process -- -- -- -- for fifteen years ever since web TV we're still not completely there but I think -- a lot closer.
To figuring out how do you make all this wealth of content on the web accents in the living room.
On I think you might take another year -- about -- -- -- -- -- -- that's gonna happen is getting so far who's who's got the best direction there.
-- is actually -- real interest in company even though it's really small.
A lot of the stuff that other companies are doing is clearly an on the path to Boxee -- in terms of integrating. This content from the lab and giving it a user friendly interface.
I still think Google TV can do it although there they had their first -- they stumbled because they realize that okay we're geeks right.
We buy technology. -- consumers don't buy technology that my experiences that it doesn't have the programming you want.
You're not gonna buy it -- that true I mean.
Well how it seems to me talking to you know you.
Don't young people basically -- were growing up with technology as the hot rod the hot -- -- the model viable.
Stuff you can Mike that you can't touch your cars anymore -- you can mod your PC you can hack your Xbox -- -- is is technology becoming a hot rod of of the actually.
But look the guys who mod their cars he with a hot rods were hot rods were still a very small fraction of the cars sold people who did it.
Like -- said geeks were by the latest thing we're gonna play around we're gonna overclocking it.
Bump but for the vast duplicates -- and that's what we're really here for the Consumer Electronics Show it's not the geeky high end electronic show.
And these are product that are gonna go to best buy that are gonna go on Amazon.
That are gonna go on a broad distribution and you wanna sell -- hundred million of them in the way you do that as you -- this and experience not a speeds and feeds.
Next week to get best buy one of exiting a lot of dismissed as best buy did -- complete store redesign and showcase the store here in Las Vegas during the event.
Which at that was an interesting be going to the best player in Las Vegas yet you see a brand new store design -- and it's more like a -- experience we have features in the thinner.
And then farmers on the outside -- they decide what is your looking for.
Build out a solution for it in the -- Brazil got a little -- out it's actually partner interesting. And their pricing.
And same pricing its its it's more it's more of a service oriented model.
2011 -- this this show is about what to look -- -- -- double what is on your new tech gadget buying list.
-- this year what it what you see here that you think.
I have to have that.
And we know you're looking at 9000 dollar TV is another matter 500 arcade and then it well everything is actually I'm thinking about by -- -- -- surfaces 7500 bucks I think I can I can swing that from my office.
For a analysts like quarter 111000 dollars worth of technology -- to finally analyzed January 15 when I would buy.
That's a big failure big TV -- -- the big surface Latin -- the big TV on the law.
On the side and I and I did surprise the -- -- as as much I think it's -- that Cassiopeia -- and that in the -- -- -- it's kind of a -- thing it is the cool little camera convert to -- -- movie camera the side screen to still camera on the flip it around us -- you put it on the federal around the it's actually the coolest little portable video camera that -- in the district is very innovative.
My favorite weird -- fun products are --
Some of air phones called sound page views on -- Macs and they basically put themselves to figure -- you could put them in the special had been when you buy them.
And put the mom.
And this -- silicon into the ear buds.
Which and shapes itself. That an analysis is preliminary and definitive for 200 dollars for people -- -- thousand dollars or more -- when they get.
Truly custom fit that -- from companies like ultimate --
I'm sort of -- to 200 dollars.
Yet it isn't yet made it look like as well.
That's it that's it that's like the who was is that also had this into a foot pad you put your foot -- -- outside your your -- for you very similar to -- that should make it you can actually make these yourself.
There -- about ten minutes all right Jim.
You know oncology stakes gate so. I just bought my wife and iPad and I think that'll be the last Apple Tablet that we purchased on W looking forward to.
Lower cost Android tablets as they come out.
But the one thing I saw that I would go ought to put money on today and again some walked around the north end of north -- -- -- -- north --
A lot of that LED lights so LED light -- in a in a cylindrical one like a replacement for fluorescent to.
LED light -- the prices are coming down.
And frankly I wanna replace all the fluorescence in my house and only be -- -- gonna be able to do that 2011.
Let's -- actually did that last year actually did two years ago 111000 dollars in January technology I spent 500 -- are now work.
Where it doesn't say -- it went -- to -- goes of the solar panels on the group connect -- to begin on -- you lower your lowering your carbon footprint.
While better light and it'll look like what about the goofy thing we've --
We're running out of -- yourself where we're at the show and looking forward to that -- what the weirdest tech people are gonna be using.
Actually that's often and actually -- but I will say this --
This is an air quality controller so if you're out -- on the -- -- Third World country and your -- -- -- twenty you know twenty day about that back up -- like a twenty day backup for the Los Angeles Los Angeles though so this will tell -- equality of the -- for fifteen bucks.
Inside your -- tell you weathered bring in fresh air or -- -- the -- giving it doesn't of those really interesting.
Is that -- tax alcohol so if your friends sneak in an open bottle of beer it'll tell you see him booted out.
Fifteen months now to integrate into the eight -- and collectors on reefs are down -- -- you gotta do that itself but it will sit right there and I think you know look.
It's I can intelligently judge of the -- is taking -- -- the car air quality controller.
-- -- -- --
Carry. The -- stuff I think some of -- as -- we're animals in areas such as Twitter integration.
I don't that you want to be doing your social networking when you're driving no matter how and the -- the user interfaces for that's the worst it is you don't wanna to be good because it would be distracting. If it's bad and why bother.
In my favorite as it as a -- as yet be a Doctor Who fan.
But is that hard as speaker system for your up for your iPhone iPad.
Looks like -- -- but on top and it got a sister product you watched if you watch top here on TV BBC if this digs helmet you can put the but the deal on top I'm dot.
It's a speaker -- -- -- to its its its its its -- strange but it's hard it's having the hardest speaker my desk at and I want.
Novelty at that -- yeah always the market for that alright guys thank you very much for coming in we're gonna have to wrap it up here we're going to take a break here.
On the life stage while our online viewers take a look back in time.
