-- --
Today is Tuesday August 16 2011. My name -- Steven --
I'm Wilson and I am Brian Tong -- for the bus -- everybody's cnet's podcast.
Of indeterminate length where you know we're bringing an end are different from the -- wasn't saying where we eat invent additional.
Conventions and mr. -- -- -- -- also I'm Molly she's out of the house the -- sees little --
So Wilson thanks for coming in and -- in admirably -- -- and you always -- them so it's and it's fun and there's one big news yesterday but sometimes what's cool about.
Big news like the Motorola Google merger is the news that you here.
Afterward some of the behind the scenes stuff and it's today was published by Diego on and on their web site talks about.
Other competitors who were pinched it in potentially -- -- Motorola now according to their sources.
They say that Motorola was in acquisition talks with multiple parties -- of them.
-- Microsoft for quite some time now Microsoft.
They were interested in acquiring Microsoft's -- Motorola's patent portfolio.
That would have allowed -- -- even -- larger advantage over Android we've talked.
You know numerous times about how Android in the Google who will getting as the -- space really needed to try to acquire that war chest for defense and maybe offense.
But in in these talks Motorola found Google's Google's -- more.
-- decimal or more acceptable to them because Microsoft really had no interest.
In -- -- hardware business -- there -- partnering with Nokia either really trying to push their platform out with multiple hardware manufactures and it was a -- motivations.
To pick up the hardware business where -- Google.
In addition to the -- -- -- it was also you know I was part of the deal but they were more willing to at least get in bed with the hardware manufacturer.
But are they really -- the big question yesterday there was a huge press conference.
I gave him bring up anything about future plans for mobile handsets and that -- I -- sort of a bit of a pessimist about this but it's an Internet search company.
There's actually no experience in running -- hardware manufacturing sort of engineer focus company.
With supply chains and factories.
I think that you know they'll probably continue their existing product -- eventually end up phasing it out this -- like it's it's it's a low margin business.
Does not allowed a game especially if Wiki you screw up -- release a bad product like you're gonna get a bad quarter.
-- Andy spent a lot of money on this I don't know what will probably expect to see -- -- a nexus in a Motorola phone coming out soon but it.
I don't think their -- lot of -- prospects for.
And I think it's gonna be more of a long played -- see what they do I.
I feel like it's a little too early to say they're not going to do anything with -- Harvard business just because they absorb.
191000. Employees yet that -- -- alone that alone.
Means -- goal without they had to at least.
Of course they had to consider that into the big picture at all immediately sure short term right now it's -- leave -- all about the patents.
Also long term though.
And we didn't talk about this as much yesterday but it does put the whole Android ecosystem a little --
In in a -- -- kind of in -- because Google is at the center.
Of the Open Handset Alliance and this was kind of an agreement between multiple companies of how they would -- innovate and although they were competitors they would work together.
Now and Samsung and Acer sees Motorola. HCC and others were part of this Open Handset Alliance or something around like over eighty companies that are part of this.
But now that you have.
Google partner -- and -- --
Motorola and buy -- -- Motorola that changes that changes the equation and so certainly he's curious to see at Howell.
Talk about these -- the main factors you know what are they can do they really gonna believe a Google cents.
I mean they they literally have a fiduciary responsibility.
To.
Try to use Motorola. Of their business unit to make money from it and the best way to do that is silly differentiate.
Add features that other Android phones are gonna have so like in no you know in the medium term if I'm HTC or Samsung or LG.
I'm looking at Windows Phone I'm looking at other platforms that I can sort of appalled and Samsung has like -- the Bada platform which isn't huge in the US.
But cents on controlling almost all of Korea and having a big presence in Asia I think that they can make a play to make -- -- -- enjoyed it over in the east.
And this sort of helps push them that way.
Yet another really cool thing that -- is doing that piggy backs we talked about how.
If Motorola and Google really start working extremely close together and the fear is that okay what if Google releases their OS earlier to Motorola so that they can get a little earlier hands on -- and --
Over these other companies Samsung though looking to innovate and add.
-- --
Put something in their back pocket -- recently decided to hire.
Sign energy and -- founder now for those -- that are familiar with it synergy in mod it's pretty much one of the most popular -- market roms or the Android install base and what they've done is they've added all these cool features.
On top of the Android platform you do have to you know.
Custom and need -- reinstall Iran to do this accesses but you know -- -- cool things that -- even built an Android yet like.
Custom lock screen gestures so some of these manufacturers they have the -- you know these -- -- tic tac -- box new entries that you can make your own custom gestures they have support.
For they have like -- DSP equalizer Rican adjust the audio effects.
They have things like an incognito modes you can browse and this is all browse the web with you know like the privacy what we called the porn mode filter and these are features that have -- built.
On top of Android and Samsung.
Looking forward to potentially differentiate their product as they realize they have to do something different now that.
No at no matter what you see Google and voted together they've acquired and they've hired the founder of -- -- did not.
Steve I actually quick to just think about this is that it's a similar movement is happening at Iowa --
You've got like Apple hiring like prominent jailbreak -- a jailbreak community programmers to do the exact same thing on enhanced it.
-- -- the jailbreak community on both sides.
Is where a lot of like really cool innovative ideas are but then -- honestly the most polished apps.
And like -- you know like you said earlier Samsung needs to really differentiate. Themselves between all the other hand you know -- manufacturers.
And that's can be even more important that He do that.
Now that more -- for the Google to.
Has so Simon voices correct yes I didn't and I thirteen crew up mutants and could -- -- there they have over 500000. Installs.
Of their -- run on top of Android and yes some people -- -- -- and -- it voids your warranty it does but we know that there.
The whole open source platform and the nature of Android has.
Really build that community and expanded it so it is Kennedy identity part of the identity of the Android platform so -- a cool it's Justine --
Now I love how they broke the story -- -- He changed his -- face -- job profiles work profile that's how they figured it out there here's his.
There's little -- -- -- -- it's a strategist.
Buy and Samsung mobile app that's what's anonymous.
-- -- -- --
Keynote He is now or percent of mobile -- and model.
Exists separately but I'm sure we'll see service features incorporated now -- one of the players that was left on the outside and we've talked about how the landscape is completely changed with this whole Google Motorola position is Blackberry.
And Blackberry.
I don't know the timing was coincidence.
It was announced a while ago bled.
Two of their new phones -- plane hit AT&T and sprint on August when He first and August 25 hits a you have this huge announced that my Google Motorola and you have.
-- -- -- -- -- --
Arguable that and -- more urgently -- OS in coming out -- -- it's just it just -- of arts.
-- it gets worse -- the other thing I'm looking at these photos.
And I swear.
If you put this year that this new model in last year's model I could not tell them apart.
But there's nothing to differentiated at all like it looks exactly the same nobody's gonna like oh man.
He got the new you know Blackberry Bold.
-- check that out it looks exactly the same I know it's running OS seven.
But that doesn't seem to be help in whatsoever.
Yes a just a couple details for people we don't -- completely destroy the Blackberry community because.
-- although they are losing have been continue to lose market share.
They still are a profitable company at this point AT&T will carry the Blackberry torch to 9810 it runs on AT&T is.
Four GL TE now -- also -- the bold.
For the price for that let's see.
It'll look that they don't list the price facility for the -- 9810 but the bold 9930. -- -- -- -- -- tier content -- -- about the same.
General price seen as all the other Smartphones.
Not nothing from price differentiator really.
Very similar to the Blackberry phones that -- -- used to --
Yet if I wasn't you know if I was working for accompanied have to use this phone like I was -- -- get this model but there's really nothing out there.
Where this does nothing to interest me base and the price or the feature set at the moment.
And that's what it's coming down to a lot of people that are -- -- Blackberry phones are using them.
More than anything it's either your girl with nails that are too long needle like screens. And it's true of all our.
Your company is saying that -- this -- authors.
-- I heard about the you know iPhone killing the Windows Phone market but didn't realize the iPhone was also killing the you know press on -- marketers.
It's just it's it's apparently I didn't notice a lot of emails have a lot shorter -- do you -- I thought.
-- just I know that regional mail stuff -- it working with the iPhone if that's so and also retire -- about rim though.
We talk about them kind of you -- odd man out and it you know.
Where do they go from here rate you have all these companies that are looking for partnerships. Or that have partnerships Microsoft at least -- -- partnership.
The Nokia you have Google that's acquired Motorola HP align themselves with webos.
What it will rim do -- of what investors think might happen is rim -- actual stock price.
It.
In anticipation that it's the smartest strategic move is for them to be bought and acquired by larger company.
This is absolutely true I was about this just stay you know like the -- -- -- for about Google Motorola is just so groundbreaking really took note of a wild sort of digest how has an impact in history.
And a lot of people are speculating that okay Microsoft may purchase Nokia.
I think that that actually rim might have a better chance of being purchased by Microsoft because okay like if I Microsoft.
Are you have any ironclad deal -- Nokia.
They're doing they're taken all the risk of building the handsets on how to -- -- even more business partners over to my XT exchange and office platform.
And buying -- seems like to be the logical easiest thing to do they've got like a built in really strong users -- user base although it's shrinking.
It's still like pretty powerful and if I'm -- IT guy.
And I realize I can get the same Blackberry Enterprise Server and Blackberry exchange server from one place and have all managed I think that's.
Quite compelling and on top of that I think that there's lots of stuff that you can do now the Microsoft owned Skype.
And you know of cloud document I think that you know like push cloud documents might be the next big thing.
Yeah I think that more than anything what rim might materialize T once.
Everything is said and done is that they just might be acquired purely for their patents.
Made in this whole battle of everyone's trying to acquire patents Blackberry and rim months rim and the parent company of the Blackberry --
Owns about 2000 mobile -- they aren't as strong as some these are the ones -- Motorola because they were one of the treated helped to create the original.
Cellular phone they have a lot of these I guess you could save qualified and as more powerful patents because they've been there from the start and as the industry has evolved.
But rim just might be a -- play as as time goes on.
And you know it ends up actually being more profitable for Microsoft and longer because I think last year.
And they -- at the numbers between Windows Phone.
How much -- gave -- revenue from its licensing -- a last.
And the money that they've been making you know essentially like suing other enjoyed phone makers.
Is more than that so like.
Our business -- from a business strategy like it seems to make sense now everybody can set it sucks.
I think it -- from a consumer point elected in and they their company they need to make money.
And your right -- rim might be the best -- to get that get those patents.
But I also think that you know -- the rim user base is still really really loyal and bring those into the windows.
Stanley might be something really.
Smart to do -- windows eight coming now public housing can sort of differentiate itself from.
Windows 7 Windows Vista like we need to see more of it innovation hopefully we'll see from Skype and maybe you might even see it from -- yes I.
I honestly don't see.
I think that right now Nokia like a lot -- been speculating that Microsoft might buy them.
I think right now they've got the best of both worlds they'd literally have.
And they don't have to take on the risk of buying a hardware company which is the biggest surprise of the whole Google Motorola merger.
-- acquisition.
Yes are indeed our guys were gonna take a quick break -- we come back -- a have a couple fall of stories.
About the old Samsung iPad banned there Apple Samsung tablet bands.
Also an update to what happened.
Over in California's bar last night in addition if you want more -- -- ACC Boeing after Apple.
You'll watching buzz out loud deep put custard in -- --
-- November 2000.
Years ago at CES specifically we we did this little thing on the stage where it was like the sexy press release remember that --
And we had hardware specs so that we had a lady with a beautiful British accident.
Reading hardware specs and a seductive way and that with that Katie Davies is that was our yeah I can and -- in an important.
Whenever I think levels or --
Determined she was the the -- they but the girl -- like reading the might to like get people on orbit -- a bit of an -- in you know she.
She -- everybody's firewire all excited. And -- -- instant answers and called back to that.
-- -- guys Wilson saying from the -- for all the way from New York join us in the house today.
See -- -- running the show as usual you know keeping it together.
Backed the stories guys European Galaxy Tab -- won the injunction. Has been lifted now docile -- --
Not Dumbledore but a docile and more content and -- reversed a portion of the preliminary injunction against the Galaxy Tab -- point -- this is where.
Apple had sense in their.
Allegedly Photoshop picture of the tablet -- hand and that result that was one of the pieces.
That resulted in the -- little court saying that it was going to be it was banning the sale of the Galaxy Tab -- -- in all European.
Europe European in the European Union except for the Netherlands.
Now that injunction has been lifted at the moment though at least because -- -- Samsung has offices in Germany.
-- they're not -- that injunction in Germany for the time being.
Sansa and three at --
Since we sell.
Samsung tablet to all the other European countries but Germany it's still in limbo and they'll be re looking at this on on August -- -- at the hearing but.
At least the tablet which is -- most popular selling tablet second to the iPad upon its release is now actress.
-- I mean it's a good thing I like to see competition.
I'm but there was you know this strange story yesterday presented Apple had supposedly doctor -- of the photos to -- -- look like.
Let you know once you actually look at the the I -- complaint that they filed with the court.
It would it -- it looked like white.
A lot of people do is that when they put it in office or word. You can resize a photo.
-- -- wrong will not gonna if you look at all the other photos but if you like derelict and other photos in there.
Is actually the right aspect ratio. This might.
And like that.
I think the competition's a great -- although I just think that that story was kind of be yes.
It's finally -- -- -- layers its sonar use saying that you might have blamed on the templates of the format you know often I think office.
I think -- it was a lawyer copying pasting up pictures being.
Any deed stretched to the wrong way but if you look at all the other photos you don't bring -- ever an idea to look up all the other photos.
And -- the right aspect ratio.
He could have a lawyer -- -- copy paste that picture in there -- mean there there there are pictures of the Galaxy Tab right next to the iPad to.
In it in and look you know you can clearly tell it looks different -- -- -- I just don't think that.
-- -- were really purposely put the reputation on the line.
To -- a picture like that and submitted to a piano -- like these are they're paying millions of dollars to do this there's better ways to.
Try to get you know you're you're you're in result out you know it -- I guess I'm looking -- -- wrong.
I don't like I know I'm -- I think that the Galaxy Tab should Beyonce I think that it's ridiculous that they block it but I am I just think that the story is kind of BS.
You know if it's like literally okay and He copied -- -- -- the -- and --
-- yet it's I mean it's just it's the Internet in general but what does that mean we -- and decent -- and -- just an update yesterday to the happenings at -- this is the story where.
-- turned off their cell phone.
Antennas or -- -- cellphone towers and the reception underground. Because of protest yesterday.
Protest did happen in support of anonymous and in protest of Bart turning off all cell phone communications underground.
They did not.
Smartly they did not turn off cell phone communications for a second day.
Com but the FCC is -- look -- and investigating decision by census goes on officials to.
See if it was illegal for them to do so looking at that and we have an -- -- -- which is via instinct take from one of the officials from are talking about.
What had happened.
-- just -- mass transit system is preparing for renewed protests today.
The move comes one day after hackers broke into one of the system's web sites.
And posted contact information for more than 2000 customers the cyber attack by a group known as anonymous came after bay area rapid transit officials decided to block wireless service in several -- Francisco stations Thursday night the agency wanted to stop a planned protest.
Over a fatal -- police shooting in July a protest didn't happen.
And march decision to shut down wireless access has been criticized even by a member of its own board.
Setting the wrong precedent for other agencies what if everybody took every -- threatening.
-- as a reason to turn off communication --
Since -- of the wireless destroy our iPods so that was just a quick a little SoundBite from there that's that's.
That's -- from the AP but I found that in see not one of Bart's own board of directors at least had division and -- analyzing the reasons.
Feel like I don't know if this is the right thing that we should be doing moving forward.
Did it really disrupt travel in San Francisco alien life in August 3 hours every one was -- only friends and Chrysler like I can't get all the protesters. Is yet because it was a combination of the potential protests and then -- shutting it down and then yesterday.
They actually did closed down four of the stations because of the protests via cell.
I mean that this is just poor reaction to what they should have never done in the first place that -- the protest had it went on on Saturday people you know what.
There have been -- service disruptions I'm sure but it it would have lasted this long they would have caught this flak.
But I think what's disturbing is that this is like it part of a big trend I mean I remember seeing articles even last week.
How in Britain during the riots they were threatening to shut down Twitter not cellphone service justice and Blackberry service to stop the writers and protesters.
And to be on -- -- -- it gets down to politics and our fundamental right as Americans to.
Gathered together -- peaceably protest and peacefully have have conversations -- -- -- -- --
But that is our right and that's what bothers me -- it looks like a lot of members of.
Anonymous.
That's that's one of anonymous -- whole initiatives and and of their philosophies for bringing these situations satellite also in the on go mean.
Patent wars that makes you wanna throw up.
Taiwan's ACC has decided to -- -- Apple over pans.
In this situation in the Smartphone maker HEC corporation is claiming infringement on three patents -- Apple's sales.
Of not only their iphones but Macintosh computers ipads and iPods.
The -- -- was filed in US district court in Delaware and seeks to halt Apple's importation.
Of infringing products in the United States.
-- --
Yeah this is -- at.
Not fun and all -- mean and this is everybody is expecting this to happen as soon as they bought S three graphics because of a couple weeks ago.
-- is just a matter of time but.
I know a lot of people are a lot of analysts are all saying that.
This lawsuit probably not gonna be a strong as Apple's position when it comes to patents on the -- is the whole bucket of worms that.
I don't know if we wanna get into but the whole patent situation US this is a prime example of how much is clearly killing innovation.
We've been -- and what they -- -- natural for a while but hey you know -- don't worry about it.
It's easy because the iPad three will not be on that list according to digitize -- which let me go for the record initially started the rumor.
That and -- -- three would come out with a high res display -- -- times now and would come out this all.
-- times now claims.
But Apple is canceled its -- iPad three supply schedule for the second half of 2011.
Which means the iPad will be launch team.
Until 2012. Like we've been talking about now this isn't -- you know how the Internet has evolved now not only can you create a rumor.
You can also treat another rumor that debunks the other --
It's amazing like it at times looks like we we had the information -- a credible source were also credible enough to tell you it's not gonna happen.
My argument is that I got its patent -- in this ES.
-- making -- rumors about anything it'll work out.
As soon as you denied the next day just say -- was a supply chain error something -- badly people people don't know enough.
Inside baseball to -- what really is actually going.
Literally went on as I made -- that story.
Patent and who are right in an awesome news for foursquare -- are on their already.
I am because I like getting discounts instantly and -- -- -- check in in presidents. Obama.
Has joined foursquare. -- its highest profile user yet.
Barack Obama.
On the location based service the White House looks like delete posting tips. This may be good or bad a -- by the time -- left.
The -- tips about the president's visits around the country and as He embarks on his economic bus tour across the midwest.
I'm surprised they didn't join foursquare -- I -- like the guys probably the most traveled.
Person in the world.
-- -- -- -- -- --
Thirty do you know I mean -- as a fresco or and then all of this information out and it be kind of cool to be.
Oh -- the president's down mystery beyond the fact that you probably are no considering the -- to cordon off to conserve is everywhere.
I think I think it's one of -- -- that they He braced YouTube.
Blogging -- -- list of all this web 2.0 stuff years ago -- -- the -- for -- was a bit late to the game.
-- is still -- it is.
You know assistance to be like oh we're just hanging out here at this bar does and does not comment on.
I think it is their personal account and -- -- is like frazzled.
This I think foursquare -- a little too much I I like how is embracing it I hope we may be.
-- is always -- it may -- technically once a month. This is all bad.
Although I'm sure it's a great way to -- -- some elements the idea is it's like a local you know diner -- when not.
-- that it's great to get press from you know tech ala technology can be talking about -- story.
-- we know all I hope everybody knows that when He tweets in the you know blogs put -- quote.
It's not -- it.
-- -- him sitting all day.
In front of a Blackberry tweeting about congressman in the GOP. Congress and by getting this bill it's just they're certainly better things for him -- -- you shattered during recent equipment and since.
And alright guys shattered dreams gone Sands Casino -- do some quick hits everybody.
In the quick hits Microsoft is dropping their reader app.
Pretty much because no one's been using it this is their reader -- Terry in that lit format.
There -- going to be pulling the plug on it it'll be supported.
Up to a year they really gave no reason for the exit but let's be honest they Kindle the iPad and the -- -- -- -- it.
In -- get much a reason to use it for is exactly not disappointed -- not spoil it all also according to.
Windows -- sorry the Microsoft blog they've announced that.
Will be expecting to see a windows a pre release launch team.
In the coming months so we know there's plenty of people -- very curious about how windows eight.
It's gonna be implemented from they have another -- their panel view that's integrated on top of their actual desktop.
They did announce on their blog that'll -- coming in this in the months.
And in addition to other things coming out Mozilla releasing -- fire -- six for real.
With some of its new improvements it was -- leaked outer released early over the weekend and everyone.
Was freaking -- a little bit but at some of the cool features it has like you know.
-- -- -- subtle things that we've seen in Chrome like it highlights the actual it is the top level domain -- that of all that other -- -- some other security features.
-- but they've been doing these -- it's pretty frequently.
But if you wanna go jump on it are Toxics is out on -- and -- cool story for the wireless carriers at least we hate how they -- of unlimited data.
They are doing an update to some other plans of Verizon is rolling out -- back to school deal that's testing an entry level.
300 meg data plan.
For twenty dollars.
-- of people that the that the U expert tells -- thirty dollars for two gigs twenty dollars for 300 that if you go over yet.
Automatically charged via -- no good.
I expect a lot -- -- be very upset about.
I mean -- engine -- because -- -- and make Israel.
Streaming music. And find that kid down the hall teaches had a bit -- on your -- -- As unity that scares.
I'm also guys if -- if you are watched his pockets BC ran Moline in my hands or -- hearing what -- -- and these are these news start we've if you guys go to Starbucks even offering kindest iTunes song of the month their pick of the week for free.
There are now jumping on board with apps and our own cnet's Josh loans and locked in the Starbucks next to our building.
-- -- like this why are they giving off apps.
It looks like it's it was.
Early it was leaked out earlier put on the retail.
A counter ahead of time because neither Apple or start us is when a comment on this but there are now adding -- free apps is one of those little.
Things in their pick of the week then you can get at the -- -- -- was.
On core -- this is cool because you're limited to the number of tags you normally can do I think it's like.
Is it I don't know how much it -- is like three or four bucks you can get this is an app for free if you go to Starbucks.
I think access 599 is the normal price but -- if you go pick up a lot to -- the same price. -- this is an encore you could save -- money.
And.
You -- -- now is not funny.
And then that you can call me a fan boy I don't even -- this is more just intriguing from a tech side the biography of Apple CEO Steve Jobs.
Planning to arrive in November it was earlier listed in early 2012 around march but both the Amazon Kindle store as -- the next door and announce it'll be coming out.
On that when He first of November -- Walter Isaacson is a well known.
Are revered -- biographer He is the man behind the book keys.
Had over forty interviews with Steve Jobs himself and hundreds of interviews with people around about what's in Justine is jobs.
Is not.
Reading the book before -- he's he's getting.
Walter Isaacson the full editorial control -- now so this might be one of the most interesting looks.
You know -- -- you'll see how crazy He can be.
People are reading the -- yep for sure right I mean whether it's Steve Jobs someone like Bill Gates or people that have changed culture. Just.
How we live it's always entry into diskette at least slivers of what goes on in their heads whether it's.
-- --
The you know there's some of violence that comes with just means it's a crazy night I think I think that's what makes -- intriguing because -- -- without shaped everything it's just kind of ridiculous. What's.
EM a name that they settled on this before and it really was called high speed the book of jobs and I think that and that connotes. -- push and that's that's like I.
I would enable it and -- -- it.
I pre ordered it I think with -- book of jobs as the original and I think now it's called Steve Jobs just calls the dusty doesn't Walter Isaacson -- it it is yet and immunology.
You have to admit at least the man has like.
Whether you like -- and -- He has quote unquote changed the world so it be interesting to see how you how. What his perspective is.
I disaster -- shades of Eric -- singing with his.
Anything -- the moon.
Voice -- feedback -- let's get out here.
-- add -- are voicemails Macs given us a call about Google Motorola and him.
Investors is Mexico -- -- if they get mentioned that Google by mobile kind of validate the vertical integration. Software and hardware all.
You'll also that rim.
Saying it only works you know which -- -- -- which -- --
It.
-- -- -- --
The appointment and -- hasn't had an forcing rim hasn't really.
Adapted to the changes in the market the whole move towards apps making their OS more open and attractive to developers.
You know so sometimes skip past them -- that I like that point we didn't.
This is bad news menus all around for removing these sprint drop the playbook tents so it's not even available on either of three major carriers -- -- industry whose opportune yeah it's just like it's it's a -- device like.
And -- Office Depot or staples.
And patent and patent system and yeah I.
My friends nothing against those two.
Retail islets but that's the distribution -- okay armed here comes our first email.
From Ryan Menard from the AKA -- -- 2000 and -- charity buzz drew.
I need an answer -- this one is.
-- so I guess we'll just transition over this real quickly this --
Email about Netflix so He -- why does Netflix have some movie streaming and some movies available.
Only four or dvd I realize they have super pricey now but some my favorites like the Blair witch project and the Star Wars movies are only available on dvd why is that.
Someone wrote in Yahoo! answers so He just asking is why is that okay well this is the lovely thing that we always talk about.
About the different deals and content deals and the different levels of deals and movie studios and content traders have with some of these services.
Now sometimes they've signed agreements where they'll allow some other content to be available for streaming and typically -- Netflix.
We've seen it's a lot of older movies.
Not as popular movies on live TV -- series now with their dvd collection that's a different story they're gonna have different rights for that and then in addition to that.
If you look at the deals at these content creators and movie studios have made.
Services like blockbuster.
Actually get a 28 day exclusive window.
-- from some of the studios -- offer not only streaming but movie rentals for their disk.
Before Netflix -- you have this huge crazy fragmented world where different services have different agreements -- different studios.
And that's why you're sometimes we all wish.
It was that easy write a if an -- we should just be -- dvd or should be but it's just the --
I N and you know that Steve movie studios to keep in mind it's not so much Netflix or.
A blockbuster dot com -- all these other streaming services.
The movie studios are freaking out because they don't want -- -- especially Netflix they don't want any one player to become so dominant.
That they're pretty much beholden to it.
And that that's exactly what happens like the music industry so they're trying to sort of not.
-- not make the same mistake that the music industry did with Apple's iTunes. Music store.
So you're gonna see it work out over the next couple years but fundamentally the big thing.
Is that movie studios also on the TV studios which also own the even the cable.
Service. They still wanna see the hundred bucks coming in every month that you a lot of people pay for their cable --
And I don't wanna lose any of those dollars -- are already invested and that's when it comes down to dollars sports.
RI disciplines are nice email this one comes to us from Brandon -- Molly brand of the show had a few opinions on the moto -- because we asked you the people which is not about everything.
One Google -- should be the next flavor of Android.
Number two I load windows on -- -- Samsung HTC has all the right reasons to move more towards Windows Phone.
The deal -- Nokia will make Windows Phone 7 relevant -- assumption interest in a strong alliance.
And if Google decides to cut out OEMs from Android that's a -- if they do.
Samsung and -- while Microsoft fall back on.
Number three this puts Microsoft in a good situation because they will validate their -- closed OS system unified experience.
It'll force others OEMs to lean on them love the show when this phone is awesome -- should grab the Samsung it's -- -- at points like it.
You'll see how it all plays out seniority -- --
-- this comes for a.
Josh -- -- you love the show on yesterday's show you are wondering what was going to happen to rim.
Here's my prediction rim is very soon going to realize that their ship is sinking.
Make a buck and rent for three big players revenue out of town broke it would not surprise me if HP buys rim.
Rim has a foothold in enterprise and what's and that's where HP also has a strong presence.
Web O as a web -- isn't trying to compete with Android or Apple they've been gunning after.
Rim since the Palm Pre came out webos combined with rim would make a powerful business phone that can also be marketed to consumers.
It would be a win win situation.
Webos had been trying to get push notifications and other Blackberry -- functions.
So HP should let rim sink more and pick up the company at bargain basement price.
Like they did palm just just saying that that's my uneducated educated predictions keep up the good work Josh. Starts.
They -- I don't I would say that webos.
Is definitely if you're seen they're trying to take down -- Android and Apple I don't think they can they're definitely competing. -- I mean it's the closest thing to an IOS interface that we've seen from other companies with its own unique.
Little planet but -- their deathly trying to compete with.
Obama I would almost disagree in that -- I think that webos. Actually has a much bigger play on the desktop.
Then it necessarily the Smartphone -- decrees like they're selling.
Merely decent numbers.
But. HP has been beholden to Microsoft for the last couple years and they've seen the success with.
Apple where if you own the whole sort of software and hardware stack that you couldn't.
Really do a lot of innovative things and differentiate your product from the rest of the market so I sort of expect to see webos.
Touch touch screen computers coming out soon.
And that's gonna like a really draw a lot of people over from CEO getting going you know a generic PC -- an HP desktop.
So -- saying they are trying to compete --
An out and I'm saying they are trying to keep but I don't know if rim necessarily make sense that HP yet I think HP definitely though is putting a lot of resources behind wobble lasts.
-- you're gonna see a lot more push for for the desktop experience.
And this -- have this Smartphone experience.
All right this next email Stephen culinary this'll last -- -- this -- this one's mind that the page in Google docs on.
All right hey buzz drew this on -- from James -- Berkeley regarding Google Rolla.
I guess Apple have to escalate and just buy -- the US government so they can -- the US patent trade office and do anything they want plus.
They can literally -- nuclear Armageddon if other companies don't -- an instant and the and the great idea James trail via one of its.
You -- -- the lack of news about the supposed iPhone five is sort of scaring everybody in the market I mean this.
And stared -- and say here yes -- -- if you would've said a year ago that of the next iPhone wouldn't come out for at least fourteen months or 1516 months.
After the iPhone four -- -- think all -- either you know Apple has something up their sleeves or they're doing something entirely stupid.
I think it's probably the former.
Only two months longer than their normal.
-- refresh -- from -- from early July a early July to September even possibly October.
Adding that a lot of people I know I was expecting and an iPhone five to come out early this summer.
And I mean it's it's just like -- than not knowing is the scary part I think for a lot of companies.
Palo trestle -- -- I -- I think they know more than they've ever known rates here because of recent weeks but I ain't.
I think every -- crack down on that after last year.
He's seen it like showing up like blueprints of -- all likes -- -- on this matter items like this is it this is a -- but.
Apple and whether they know -- -- don't know.
It's just you would just hope to see --
A company kind of put out something that relief -- -- because it always feels unfortunately.
Like Apple do something in late as of late and then other companies -- filed.
And I just wanna see someone really just shake it up and be really bold -- you know Wilson will see if that happens but it's --
I -- I don't wanna see some more competition name.
I -- I definitely see more competition but I'm afraid that -- -- people sort of making rash decisions. Early on Mike pushing -- ice cream sandwich.
Which is hosting duet.
And I hope what doesn't happen is that these screw up the user experience because it just trying to Russian software.
-- and I think one of -- underestimated things that people don't talk about Apple's -- execution.
They'd made it easier to do that -- gave it its unseen things and that that helps them -- -- consumer world and people like my mommy don't evaluate phones and say I want and I found.
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --
There was a good article I've forget where -- -- that. It's also a bit of the nomenclature --
He called on Smartphones.
That's the proper category name for -- Android phones in the iphone's.
I in the windows phones but a lot of people just refer to them as iPhone. And He can and -- all collectively I --
To set well okay in last in the -- -- A game discounts to us from mark in San Diego dear buzz crew.
I was amused by the shock and outrage expressed over the Bart shutting off cellphone service and does in the disbelief that it happened in San Francisco really.
If I had this if I had to pick a spot in the US for them where -- be most likely.
San Francisco would be in my top five I mean -- -- this the same place that ban those out those.
Other scourges of humanity -- goldfish and happy meals loved --
And I don't what's the whole with the old goldfish. You know you're -- editor freshman America's I don't know the whole ultimate guide to split here.

As -- to prevent girls to prevent their inhumane suffering.
Wow I didn't realize I live in a city that is so sensitive towards goldfish feelings and they didn't ban toys in happy meals -- because you don't like that.
Does because -- the argument was like that that always.
And -- -- assisted -- and held out the Nokia but does not command -- the parents solar yeah I was insane about -- -- -- parents and take your kids to -- -- -- -- the -- why don't understand parents -- once -- Dan goldfish bulls.
