Today -- Wednesday July 27 2011 my name is Stephen B two I'm Brian's song and I'm Molly -- log in above loudly at podcast of indeterminate I -- at cnet.com. Is upset 1519 and -- point -- that now I hope that we'll be putting it out as -- web exclusive later. That you haven't got to join a show -- some time because we've had what I think might be. My favorite pre show ever. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Into the studio today his name is Mac and did his name is Mac because that the day he's a lion He has a really big -- guy needs. The -- up. And I like don't judge guys don't judge you -- the -- of them when your under your bed somewhere all of you guys listening every single one of -- He doesn't -- -- -- It as an ignorant for those want the moon. Lunar. -- It's stupid. Pretty -- -- And the way that of the -- M property. For about a but He likes that but Stephen -- joined together in Ramstein goat island steamed towels wire. Most tennis -- a diamond I pray you might break got a chicken and -- its head off closed and -- we will try to post that that pre show out take later on CNET TV -- -- -- And out more than news -- us in this case -- here. After yesterday the whole entire conversation about -- all mongol and I'm taken -- Windows Phone 7 challenge. Is that after a -- does a little bitter at. Windows on -- has apparently according to Microsoft been released to manufacturing. And it will be coming to consumers this. So this is the point where there released mongo -- hardware manufactures to -- loading them on their phones. So phones rolling out in the future will have the -- update. Also current Windows Phone seven's users though there are gonna have to wait a little bit before. They roll -- out over the air via so as usual you know that that's how it rolls right you by the new phone you get in and they're gonna do -- -- -- I believe it sometime it's either later in the summer or maybe early fall that's gonna be in the next few months. And then it in addition -- that the first official -- -- phone was unveiled and will be. Available in Tokyo. -- Tokyo based phone for their first official -- phone. Now -- cut interest seen them. They say that mango -- which is officially at Windows Phone 7 and a half. Adds 500 improvements to the platform including. Email conversation view threads that features that bring together text and -- messages and FaceBook chat. I. Multitasking. And better at multitasking copies of -- -- they did they did their own copy -- -- they'd put that in an update. Let's see Microsoft if they IDC is predicting that windows based Smartphones as we know will account for 20% of the market by 2015. Second only to Android for that Japanese phone. It has a three point seven inch screen a thirteen point two megapixel camera. -- -- -- which is kind of categories -- a lot 32 gigs of on board memory and it's waterproof. Hey Austria and now and for those of you wondering I've got a lot of tweets about this -- I was of course been complaining about my phone again yesterday I don't know when the challenges concerning and then and yeah I'm curious. At Carolina where we are is gonna work with people -- and keep an open mind going -- the challenge -- -- I'm very here's but among well. As I am -- with so much rage. About life on right now that really any phone will be better than what you gonna be a honeymoon period I can't tell you -- on less than it was definitely going to be -- in the back and bigger him. And a little bit of good timing considering how much we've been talking about Google plus and -- anonymous account her -- account problems. -- but just yesterday. Debuted -- a step by step online guide aimed at helping small businesses. Use this social networking site its called FaceBook. Business. So they're using this as an online education center it gives directions such as you know how to create a profile for your business. -- targeted ads and deals I can see that being beneficial for a lot of smaller businesses to build a treat deals with in. The business aspect of the page and interactive customer feedback on line that. -- -- -- with responding to them than. Nevada stated that there are no there are no new features but they've built this -- -- training center to help -- does is to get involved in. -- and we know how Google plus has still yet to -- the -- and approval process to acquire businesses they haven't ruled that out yet. Right and so does the timing of -- all is -- -- you know capitalizing on even -- play any of businesses are already on FaceBook. This'll help. That. That's not that's -- that hasn't done yet the -- the small business groups. And likely said the fact that it's no new features that it's essentially a web site that FaceBook sort of how to put up really quickly -- it comes. Is tough I mean if anything it's more of a reminder I think you know I mean Diego with cleaning up and the timing of events could certainly be coincidental. But it does seem to suggest that would FaceBook is doing is trying to. It -- take Google -- very seriously and respond to. Some of the criticisms of Google plus I think here's what. So not -- -- about new middle. Also not a bad move they're apparently running -- teaching users how to turn off facial recognition. Which I think most of kind of stop for you -- about I but I guess people are still freaking out about it yet. And we can we actually couldn't find this this added that it's it's a visit a video at Indiana them. And this is the tag suggestions feature where they were. I mean it's arrogant and -- I'm concerned this is not having -- when you take pictures of people uses its facial recognition engine to suggest. Tags that you might when He is now obviously we talked about the problems could arise if this were used in public profiles. And -- that were uploaded publicly may be in places where it was a photo of a protest and in the police can use it to find intact people. But in terms of individually is for your friends it's like it's only -- -- from your friends. The via the face recognition is not points from the entire database based in Seoul. Basement claims -- that every US user every US user. I want to get actually get in trouble for protesting the street another gadget will see the -- at least twice they say. -- that's at least it. It's kind of like what competition usually does is force the dominant service to get better. And so -- Mac case great -- even if no one keeps using Google plus. It's awesome that Google plus has made enough of a splash that it teams are really be pushing FaceBook to address some of the problems that people have -- but. You gotta love that competition -- -- their brain works in our favor it got really even if sometimes and it's subtle little ways and then -- it. Also if you guys on his you know at this news -- temporarily view but if you like money. And you like earnings we have some new reports coming out to -- company's electronic arts pulled in almost. One billion dollars in revenue. In one quarter -- more than doubled its first fiscal quarter net income. Thanks to sales of games like portal to crisis -- and soccer title -- but. We also talked about how they acquired pop cap -- And that's gonna help add to their bottom line as well let AEA sports not having too much trouble right now or are you like our electronic arts act. -- princely. No no not at all noted old. If if you were wondering if the gaming industry is still there one of the only recession proof industry is this would seem to suggest that the solo and they -- losing money losing money but. Yeah or not they're not losing money may -- -- lastly let them they made last time even though they pulled in a billion dollars in revenue -- -- and they're also working like Star Wars like World of Warcraft subscriptions sort of game yes in an hours Old Republic yeah that'll be good for them as well so. -- slightly improved. Officer I drink my coffee cup a little water -- I. I flash back up actions that show on the I would want all Portland job and spacious. I was like -- -- -- -- -- They've posted second quarter net income of -- 191. Million dollars or 41 cents per share which is down. A little bit down from 207 million dollars in the same quarter last year but revenue. Was up 51%. Do you believe 51% -- earlier they last year. The revenue was around six point four billion in -- this year its site nine point 91 billion dollars in pure revenue. I think that's a machine and despite the decline in net income so basically what -- as they polled in. Tons of money they sold a ton of stuff there costs increase so their overall net revenue was not as much of -- had been in the previous quarter. But the fact that they just flat out means so much money and sold so much stuff topped Wall Street expectations. And so obviously Amazon's -- once again. The lineup as analysts point out Amazon is quietly often enough basically -- that what I said when this news what you would almost start to think that. Amazon was maturing into business -- -- they might you might not expect them to have. Wild revenue growth. Like 51% quarter over quarter but they. Just keep sort of quietly making -- removes. It's been within about the past year and a half or so that I really started pretty much making Amazon might go to once you have that Amazon prime membership yet because. The shipping comes so fast some you don't even think about it and now if it it takes some some of us. That are like in other techno files the kind of really don't -- -- Amazon it's the got a ways to go. Right so my mom and -- my mom starts going. Like Amazon -- -- my my use you know my mom as a barometer sometimes and until she and my dad. Start using Amazon even maybe let's say once a month. Then you're talking about that that even that next level like mass market. There's there's a lot of people use it but I think there's still room to grow that's announcing a lot think there's an -- -- they're not gonna be stopping anytime seizure. But with the sentiment turned him into the mother and -- all of an Amazon business. But when -- one thing that someone has an avatar and that is interesting in that they wonder how they California tax thing. Is going to affect Amazon in coming quarters and and that might there is. Starting to be a little bit of a backlash and so -- it'll be interesting to see how they can expand globally how they can counter some of those that still -- state sales tax issues. And and keep growing older and also whether they're gonna do tablet but the trick about the wholesale state tax issues that. They cut their ties with the affiliates so they could still sell in California and not be taxed. So Amazon California -- have over -- of -- now is still editors but they have they haven't pushed out through the big fight. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- They are. A gill espionage arm went out it's not going -- -- it going to affect them in the sense that they're trying to get an initiative on the ballot to repeal it. But it's still sort of an ongoing issue and -- you're absolutely right California is a failed state -- -- national should be able to pretty effectively router of the blockage. And I don't know lightly Philip. -- Greg Greg. Orlando we come back it's just been like a rinse and repeat with this beam of content providers just findings sold many ways not to provide you with their contents. That one just goes on and on and then -- shocker. Mozilla's mobile last may based future patent battles. Today. -- -- -- -- You -- often represented and YPD downloading got a lot of -- guys are back to the story is. Fox has decided they're gonna be switch seen. Two and authentication. For her Fox News shows all on line. Dish Hulu plus will get the first right now what this means is right now people that are watching episodes of was musically is exempt for an example. The next day after it -- You will not be able to do that unless. You're part of a few services. That have subscription based services like Hulu plus and also DISH Network if your plugged in to those two companies. You'll be able to watch -- the next day but everyone else that has been used to watching -- shows the next day we'll have to wait for an ED window. Before they can watch these shows and other services -- without having to pay or be locked and anything so you can see it on Hulu. But now it's gonna be implemented -- on August 15 but eight days later because they're treating -- other window. To make. More money if people love that has been only got one only we want to wait a week to see our -- so that's the next episode has already aryan by the time we watch that show. -- it yet so it's it's an authenticated subscription model like we said and and it is. Been described by some of the pay while it's really more of -- pay window as paid content went out. But they have to there in this bad situation in some ways because they as -- content with it. They want payment for the broadcast networks -- cable but they're available over the air boxes and until now they've been accessible online without pay. But they want to be able to -- it. The pay TV operators don't -- have to Paper retransmission rights if it's available online and it becomes this huge dance but at the same time if you put up like. An eight day window and people really really really wanna see that program. They're -- empire. So you have this -- you know I mean it's like. Becoming as John Strickland put in the chatroom -- content with holder in my opinion. Is not the way to. Push or little business model it it just doesn't. I understand that you have to figure out new ways to make money and I think I and I understand and the broadcast world. -- -- -- -- and ugly complicated brightly. Because of all that the local carriers in the retransmission rights in the TV everywhere which seems like such a good idea but then you get big distributors in two programmers who -- a cut of all that and I know it's a mess. But anytime you're putting -- more and more barriers for consumers to. Consume content you're just pushing them more toward illegal sources and -- -- that. And this is you know -- this is gonna affect a lot of people who won't hear this story. And they're gonna think that clear some of their other favorite fox shows like they have been doing in for the past year effort to will be up the next day. And then we'll be like what is going on and then they're gonna get mad at that content creators of the content rights holders. And it's gonna turn on them like this. The really you know I know they're trying to be. Trying to make good with that cable carriers in the retransmission rights but this is this they're only gonna -- maybe. Let a few not I would even say like a million dollars off of just treating this like. -- -- 799. A month what how how much are they gonna see of this just a (%expletive) off everyone else. I -- and plus they continue to dislike. -- consumers around right if you've gotten used to -- certain paying him an EU like. It say you don't read this article right. And then come August 15 you go to Hulu to watch that next episode of -- like to have been a full time and -- listen -- and nearly went well you actually -- on Hulu. If you're an authenticated subscribers -- -- rule -- city Paper -- plus. But yet it's as if it's it's just like. I know that we're in the wild west isn't gonna take a long time -- the stuff but the -- in the -- -- -- the more you. Look it's just the reality that at this point everybody knows how to go online and find the show that they want. Don't you as the studio want that to be the legal alternative and not illegal alternative. -- -- -- -- -- -- It's what's also very curious as if this. In their minds is successful enough will we see other studios like NBC and universal and CBS and well actually CBS is like the content anywhere. But like ABC will we see those other studios try to do the same thing treat this now a new window where the revenue as a minimal. It hurts consumers it pisses consumers off but really it's just like a handshake with the could with the cable companies yeah that's that's all comes down to and a -- that -- I would kill me if I gotta show on eight days -- Did you have. I am no winners didn't blow up. No one hour late -- admit it is the Paper the -- where they shelled -- sound -- not. We is that Shelby town at -- -- any other show coming there and -- the feed Beecham I didn't see it on iTunes there is that leave someone out there trying to make things easier for you can now. The new -- a public Linkedin. It's continuing to -- It's about that crazy seventy dollars from her partner. But after I admit I think this is off of -- lives with. New plugin that if you're applying for a job you can actually use the plug into basically like click a button. And apply with all of your Linkedin information you just instantly emails the applicant's information directly to the job poster. Or submitted to a database. This part of this free service or part you have to be part of the paid business or the plug -- is available to all employees are -- or freeze so if you are looking for. It for candidates and take this thing and embedded on your site and then any applicant can commonly click a button and to send the resume via linked and so -- Just like -- data entry simple but I. Love this truly awesome is that so for example a website like Netflix here there's like animal -- -- that you can click on the link. But a net Netflix it's a link directly linked in so take to their page. And you pretty much clicked on a -- that's has applied at Linkedin it automatically fills all the fields that you have filled in the from your Linkedin profile. And then if you wanna type in a cover letter that's great and it just -- -- -- over how many people have actually I've had so my friends. They've been able to get jobs through linked in just because people found them. I have definitely notice I've had people say that every time they update their Linkedin they get headhunter costs. Like BK would you pay for the business service I think you can see when people updated their as a means yes and so -- and I heard -- more often you update your Linkedin states like them more visible is so like you is -- any like little minor -- -- never will be on top of -- change -- Yes and now maybe even just like -- com -- something. I wonder what. Let the little changes are that trigger that but it's too but I have definitely heard that the people when they they say when it did in and I would tell people and -- and if your job hunting. Update your Linkedin is for one thing your bosses will notice it doesn't -- That's always get thing up and for another thing the -- I noticed -- very cool stuff. According to experts -- of this kind of thing according to Florian Mueller and others and independent patent analyst. Says that -- plan to create a mobile operating system we'll probably face. Patent challenges. In the extreme and other simply called it too little too late. -- Sobering reality of the day after the is a day after. Smartphone operating system software faces an incredibly dense patents that it had Mueller and a analyst Mozilla may be able to avoid large parts of the IP issues -- Android by only using certain components. And building new software on top of it but. The patents that it is still there. And part of it is that their -- use bits of Android. In that this new mobile us including the kernel and device drivers at on the outset -- that's what they plan on doing and we know how ugly that stuff has already. Is already -- Oh yeah and then they say even if Mozilla created a complete LS from scratch including the boot the code data plans to initially borrow from Android it could still -- court time because -- As Miller points -- It's hard to read -- competitive Smartphone operating system or application without infringing on many patent. In fact -- And in love with a story about general Google general -- -- counsel Kent walker saying that the Smartphone industry's arms race for patents. Is in fact. Hurting consumers. And then leaving companies to sort through the -- of litigation. And what any you know -- this is Google's legal team. Cool is part of this but you see why everyone is going after these companies that are putting up their -- for sale although they know. This system is. Clearly hindering innovation and preventing companies from pushing forward because of all these pan -- seats that are lawsuits are going back and forth. These companies still have to acquire other -- just the defend themselves. It's it's this vicious cycle and now it's just it's just -- idiotic. And it's not and Google can. It's not like they can stop right I mean -- is an event there in a position where He says the tech industry has a significant problem. Software patents are coming up the works of innovations -- direct quote from Google and obviously it is somewhat self serving for them to -- it appears self serving for them to -- that. Because their position of trying to like you said acquire these patents but they have to. You literally have to -- play the game if you have the money and you're able to acquire the patent portfolio to protect yourself from this freaking nightmare of litigation then you have to do it. But if you're someone else. Like Mozilla or somebody even smaller than Mozilla who lacks a patent portfolio and the resources to acquire -- you are basically shut out of this market. -- like you there -- to in my mind there's no question. That at this point innovation. Is suffering in the extreme because no little guy can get into this business. -- I mean you could say like. Hulu with the first world problem because we're not gonna have more and more awesome Smartphone -- -- personal problems and was not just imagining -- -- you know like when -- -- a consumer will suffer but. That the -- in some cases are so broad and -- they are emblematic of a larger system that really truly does affect. All kinds of technology that could be life -- I'm not saying your Smartphone is -- thing you'd see that the general issue its movement. The -- patents and. Another -- news is the anonymous raids -- -- reported on about a week ago or two weeks ago. It's been revealed this is from WIRED Magazine that they used the way that the FBI went to target this massive -- that happen across the country. The FB I was -- zine. The a list a list provided by PayPal of the 1000 Internet IP addresses our responsible. For the most protests traffic this is when anonymous is -- -- attacks took down or tried to take down PayPal. Because they were preventing monetary transactions from going to the -- -- accountant so they decided to retaliate. But in that right -- they said two days after it happen PayPal turned over. Their information to the FBI and they were tracking all this activity immediately hasn't happened so now this is what they're using as a reference to go after some of the members. Yes and PayPal continues to withhold funds -- -- WikiLeaks and then also as you mentioned turned over a bill that thousand IP addresses that it says sent malicious network packets to PayPal. That as we said the feds are now using to track down individuals. And charge them now PayPal r.s are anonymous and -- -- put out. A communique an official communique. And said. And this is true. What they say what the FBI needs to learn about attempting to find and prosecute -- best -- on a list of a thousand IP addresses is that. Because those suspects are the people that they -- could face a fine of up to 500000 dollars and fifteen years in jail lol because they've they have these insane new laws that criminalize packing behavior above and beyond what is even close to. Reasonable. They're saying what the FBI and insulin is that there's a vast difference. Between adding -- oyster chorus and digital sit in with lower orbit ion Canon which is what the constitution amendment. And controlling a large botnet of infected computers so let these thousand IP addresses that PayPal turned over. Maybe 900 of them who who -- -- some number of them -- are almost certainly the IP addresses of computers that were part of botnets. That made it where the owners of those computers idea no idea that they were being used in denial of service -- that's how they work. And instead they're they're using this list to go around up people and and Patel in a subject and them to these in -- -- Anyway they're urging. They say we are discussed in these injustices against and PayPal does that they're like here's -- movement in -- they are encouraged anyone using PayPal to immediately close are counting consider an alternative. Also I agree. I don't like -- I don't know I think they're evil. It's not that you'll satellite -- All the early to say about got a lot more evil often and -- they take that -- fat chunk of my eBay sale unless I was supposed to go to charity and still dead but they still -- a big chunk of it. I didn't you they're they're charity thing because -- -- so much -- you went to directly through eBay's charity. I didn't know I didn't use -- I just said I'm not using eBay's charity auction mechanism. The money will go to charity and I'll send you a -- -- -- eBay's charity auction mechanism at the complete scam takes like 20% off the top. It's ridiculous -- Atlantis and then all PayPal thing is like appeared nude because it because they're not. An independent payment service -- -- owned by eBay -- like -- -- FYI. We're gonna hold -- -- for ninety days because you don't public and user -- on eBay or any -- -- that's when you first open the Seattle my whole life I've never used it before -- that you're you're just not gonna give me my money. That's awesome and by the way did you freeze accounts based on government pressure. You you know potentially legitimate sources of information. Dissemination that are operating within the bounds of free speech okay. -- -- -- -- And the site and are likely -- shall -- Latest rumblings Apple is currently finishing up work. On -- all truth in. Fifteen inch Mac. This is -- -- to Mac rumors is what they've learned that. Earlier this week also they don't know if it's clinical MacBook -- the MacBook Pro. This -- make sense because when Apple first announced their very first MacBook -- they said this is the direction where laptops that we're gonna be doing are going to be moving. We don't know when it's gonna come out if it's gonna come out in fall. Or Christmas or next year but it appears that Apple is doing the finishing touches on model a fifteen -- and. Yet the unofficial Apple weblog apparently says they do think you'll find -- the -- programming and potentially be available in time for Christmas. Which will make those first ten air buyers like -- maybe not just about about an act in -- inherently we can -- a little breathing. Before you get the fifteen incher policy okay now I like Phil -- a small sizes as the I would love and -- -- them and even. Here's a thing. Also with these fifteen inch guys a lot of fifteen -- users are more power users. It's gonna have some power but it it's I would assume. This is my assumption that it's still not in the old to be as powerful or as feature rich. As the current MacBook pros it's going to be a slimmed down design like that in and I have as many -- -- let me just Allstate drive so it's gonna be. The MacBook Air we see specifically for someone who wants the lighter form factor and and there's a market for that or so. According to a survey from price grabber now okay -- -- -- I don't know -- saying like it's not a -- but it's a survey of 3000 online consumers. 35%. Of respondents. You're -- be patting the audio -- the padding the Walton is not as much reverb on your out of an asset -- -- you -- we could we could improve the quality of the voice you know I don't like keeping this market due to a lawyer is a -- -- although I will say. That arguably the phone. And that's the Smartphone device. Is a platform and Apple push it as a platform and they said we want app developers to come in and developed for our platform and that would suggest more of a computer like model. That should lead to -- mean you know that arguably what Apple's doing is is anticompetitive to an extent because they're giving their own. Apple. Favorable treatment compared to the other apps that it has so generously allowed to exist on its platforms and tourists really and it was like -- new computer system. -- the Kindle is and always has been. An Amazon product that only does one thing which is what Amazon books -- I think there might be enough differences in their device models. That that you know if you're creating a platform it behooves you to be a little bit open because you want them the breath and that. That kind of them. Variety of apps are available I think its its I think what -- -- the idea why because the Kindle is a closed device they don't get in trouble for much -- probably said. Yeah because it's more of a single or two used to -- it is not as -- it's not everyone a phone it is gonna be -- -- that is your everyday life thing. But it -- you know -- Apple still been a big -- back. I think it. At the end of the day and it expanded data it'll -- that he's back. It really -- they're being reduced their forcing their own customers into a crappy experience with the products that they currently use so that they can try to force them to use Apple product which is happier than the product that they're making -- -- that sounds like -- -- what I know now. -- -- -- listener Neil I was like really not only are you. Only know that so rational -- that -- line now also when you -- about crappy guild did Greenwich -- is locked in the bathroom the kids wouldn't be screaming about background. It's so. Cutting some pretty well alright fine. Also smart and junk put blankets on -- -- -- -- -- audio a little bit I'm looking for higher quality stuff out of the closet go leave him alone in the closet. There. And then that's our next caller. Wants us to reconsider. Third time. -- some of the love and -- that we have heat and group. Eight Oscar -- Seattle. So calling regarding yesterday's story about Google gathering all that information in on your computer the unique hardware identifiers and then linking that to your physical address. So they've been caught doing that they've lied about they're still doing that Eric Schmidt has been quoted as saying He likes to go right up to that creepy line. And this is the company that you want to give all your photos to this is the company that you guys are all excited about. Starting a social network do you really want to do. Networking. On Google do you really want to give Google all your information. Might rethink that. -- -- -- -- that evidence that a Google plus -- about Google pleasantly Google -- knows I mean and presently it a lot about them dollar us away. And streaming even -- Netflix streaming catalogs -- the crumbs of the market slowly but surely they killed the traditional distribution chain and -- all that's left is the online model. And then they Jack -- the price of dvd plans just as people are looking for ways to economize. Suddenly the studios have no way for their mid list and blacklist titles to reach an audience. There's simply no room -- a red box that kind of variety the studios have no choice but to sign over the streaming rights and Netflix. Becomes thing in the world.
