Today is Thursday June 16 2011. My name is Steven -- of.
-- -- all I'm Donald bell and I am I let -- in a buzz out -- in a podcast of indeterminate length it is episode 1491.
Happy birthday. Has happy belated Donald. Nice it's a very honorable fifty that I've reached you Bay's operational and -- I think -- in fact keep the head in -- you look.
Of me easily Verizon.
In fact if I didn't notice at the age of fifty that's -- like.
You look let 35 so that's what you have -- genetics 100.
I think if you look very biased just the way it is that Brian Tong phenomenon when no one knows some 42 -- and I know it's so weird that we could.
-- -- -- -- -- --
There -- -- -- -- -- studio but don't panic there's no -- Now we know that -- in -- and a whole different kind of thing here.
And -- -- without having to make that -- them dusted -- we couldn't get work with -- -- -- -- coworkers and but I congratulations Donald thank you very much feels good to be older.
Definitely. It as you grow up in more mature -- they'll get everything. I would cross site.
In other -- they've actually it is the 100 birthday of IBM.
A hundred -- -- he's seen yet.
They're celebrating a hundred and -- hundredth anniversary of its founding.
It was led by American capitalist icon Thomas. 1970s it was totally and we held.
And actually got this really useful -- relief.
Without -- -- area about no written plea yesterday at that really awesome press release about the -- when he watched.
That is relevant and important to network and -- maybe it would have been if we had and gadgets of but this one did you look at the gave -- a -- of bullet -- about what IBM is responsible for example -- things -- -- -- the personal computer obviously.
It was an Apple everyone who has backed the idea. That I'm sure their personal computer took up a wall ranked by grossly out of room into the room night -- all right.
Military grade computers back and they took the -- --
Seriously it was not messing -- big they did like the computer punch card thing to the first electric electric -- -- in all kinds of things but for the major things that they put in our in the press release.
The personal computer -- think eye surgery although no I did not know that one and -- -- -- IBM I never.
Actually -- -- and -- ram hard drives a bar codes and magnetic strip among of course many many many other inventions.
While they're basically like the patent machine.
-- check this out so on this article that we have in our links that PC world you can check out it's arguable points in 1975.
The IBM 5100 portable computer enters the market --
The priced at 9020000. Dollars. Wow and that's traded yeah I mean there's a ton of really global -- the guys in checked out by -- at some meetings up and also IBM the mind behind Watson.
Yes we did you know we did mention that the property champion.
They're still they're still going --
-- -- also I have to say.
That one of the best business but I've ever read is about IBM -- who says who says elephants can't dance about Lou Gerstner.
Who came in as CEO -- really turnaround IBM at a time and it was really wondering.
-- it's is that.
It's -- fascinating book about IBM.
But it's also super interesting in terms of -- business and culture.
Tuesday just a random little bug allowed -- group nominate them.
I really like I said it sucked the buzz -- book club regularly should I really like -- but but so anyway happy birthday again.
To move on just okay. Good to other -- -- because I -- also announced it as anything -- cake in honor by an entry here.
-- reports are leaking out on techcrunch and gives -- and others about Facebook's -- top secret. Project.
Designed at undermining. IOS devices and Apple.
With html five a project.
Yes so what they're hoping -- -- do they have somewhere around eighty developers on -- and they've also partnered with outside game developers their hope.
Is no longer will people be going directly to the FaceBook app in IOS five and they're doing this burst.
-- -- you know targeting the Apple platform but they would go to a mobile version of FaceBook that is optimize.
And -- -- -- works exactly like their current iPhone app now the other hope with this is that.
They can then it.
By still using the iPhone as a platform for people to go to by bypassing the App Store Apple's own App Store who takes cuts.
You bypassing in the future of Google's App Store.
They can then drive people to their mobile app where they can then run transaction using FaceBook credits sure we've seen that hasn't really taken off the they're still trying to figure way to monetize that are being more successful in having people do more you know pristine apps but.
You know so much of the activity that's going on -- but is in the mobile space this makes complete sense and we've seen how -- relationship with Apple become more more contentious.
You know back when ping was announced -- -- was like lies and FaceBook integrated and Apple had said.
You know their terms are too onerous -- -- commit to them.
Then we see in -- -- announcement Twitter was integrated directly into the -- less not face button so -- console.
Clearly be although there on the same text based and there are some overlaps they're not they're not clean friends and this is a wafer FaceBook to move around them -- -- --
I have to say I like this because you've heard me talk -- -- about how I think app stores contribute to the balkanization of the mobile space in general I mean this is not necessarily -- I think html five can solve a lot of Napster balkanization issues and I like the fact that they're working on html five based platform although it -- certainly not be mistaken for anything that would be.
Like an open web on mobile -- it's basically gotten away for them.
Possibly -- looking -- -- -- -- well let me blueberry cake commentators and Bergen. You know what really -- Rothenberg and it.
You know can we need a break that we need a break then -- -- blueprint a thank you drug and anyone in the building of listening you can break Herman Miller's amendment out that.
-- political beliefs of others by way more include politically cup.
However. It shouldn't be mistaken in any way for some kind of like open web movement -- clearly but it would possibly break the stranglehold like they say.
On mobile app distribution within Apple and -- part of faced with the whole plan to Canada has become the -- on the -- I love to -- like.
-- -- off by whiz Steve Jobs is big push right that was the initial thing for killing flash has yet to really make sure a small size being.
Pushed forward -- from all the different that content providers and now they're like okay we're ready for -- -- -- five and now we're gonna use it to destroy.
Yeah -- any which.
Enough if I really I liked the idea but I think obviously there's -- -- like to major challenges one of them is people -- the general consumer that's been so dependent on the app.
For them to all the sudden you know whether they announce the -- go use -- mobile version of the site it pass the really work.
Exactly like or even better than the mobile app that they already have right now for people to migrate over -- -- the second thing is still we're not at the point where.
-- game like.
-- Angry Birds or even other games that they're trying to company's game developers to be part of this transition.
Are they going to be as robust than will be self contained games really run exactly the same on an HMO by version that you no reason that they shouldn't.
You not a but not all but not all the games would be able to do you know -- some simpler games like we've seen Angry Birds be able to transition the Chrome browser wouldn't you know I think it's going to hates -- -- five.
But there's other types of games that.
I would I would be a little -- -- saying that it's gonna run just as smoothly or beat you know it just as full featured as it as a dedicated app on its own.
There's -- is zero reason technically speaking zero reason why it shouldn't be so open and run as well.
-- but doesn't really know I'm I'm not even like more advanced games -- run on your phone.
That FaceBook would offer.
You just right -- from makes him out by browser via simple games yes but not more advanced games zero everything you've seen all games across the board to run perfectly -- money to I think there's no technical reason why they --
Like html five it was designed from the ground up to be that replacement there was the -- is -- I'm not -- I'm not saying that they you know it it will take an engineering.
Effort but so do apps and apps in fact -- -- more of an engineering effort because you happen to -- right now all.
At face -- -- -- -- Apple needs your old html five side against you read and we're gonna try to undermine you that way but they could.
Easily then port whatever they build an -- in html five to any mobile device the right now.
Figured developer yet to do a really good job making really complicated game for -- -- -- and hoped that platform.
Remains as relevant as it is now with the growth -- Mandarin and the potential growth of windows on and then you have to figure out how to port.
Any of those games to those other platforms if you wanna go there because you realize standard -- exploding like html five is billed at one element anymore.
But he stuck to get people to come the content -- -- there's there's still the dynamic of the App Store and Apple's whole.
You know walled garden -- -- ecosystem.
That keyboard is comfortable I think FaceBook could pull it up because people are already on FaceBook if you got some FaceBook at this point and and to farm bill.
-- iPhone via html five that'll work camp but otherwise just designing apps race -- not automatically gonna put two in front of all the people back and he can use it -- have have a phone that's compatible.
Yeah I mean I think it I think based -- has the best shot at pulling -- up because its -- but in so many people already live in FaceBook likely to launch their browser.
It goes -- of if but.
All out they interact with their FaceBook help with searching happened in I mean I think they have pride -- attempted to really make it then that way.
And it's true -- chat -- is very widely pointing out that we've heard that right you know build once run anywhere thing with Java before and it -- who ideally html -- will be better -- thing I am in favor of rich wet -- rich mobile application development of that is not platforms. You know -- also mean the message there for sure yet anything they can free effluent from the app world.
To -- is a pro.
App -- you wanna make a lot of money.
But when you have more chance of making a bunch of money on every apartment except that an Apple won't promote you because the have to be like -- with -- -- -- -- unless you start on Apple's platform and are successful there and then go to their platforms and you'll care.
Now ala Angry -- island -- at. A stop.
That's an Internet find themselves and if that secret photo sharing out the ads --
