EE Kestrel is a super-cheap 4G Android phone

Phones
Think using super fast 4G data speeds means having an expensive high end phone, think again. This is the Kestrel from EE. A 4.5 inch 4G enabled Android phone that you can pick up for only 100 pounds. Don't think either for opting for a budget phone means settling for a cheap piece of tech. The Kestrel actually has a lot to offer. Phone is made by Huawei and is basically just a rebranded Ascend P6. It's slim, easy to hold in one hand, and seems well built enough to take a few knocks. It's not exactly pretty, but for the price I'm not complaining too much. The 4.5 inch display is one of the main areas where money has been saved. It has a relatively low 960 by 540 pixel resolution meaning on screen icons, text or images don't have the same crispness you'd see on high definition panels. The Motorola Moto G which also now has 4G and a 720p screen which is much sharper, but it does cost a bit more cash. It's running on the now pretty old Android 4.3 Jellybean but you won't really notice as it uses the same emotion DY skin that you'll see on regular Android phones. I'm not that keen on it myself, mostly because there's no dedicated app tray. So you're forced instead to keep all of your apps and widgets scattered across the multiple home screens, which can get very cluttered. Still, it's straight forward enough to use. There is a simplified home screen mode as well and you can customize the look with various themes. [MUSIC] It's powered by a 1.2 gigahertz quad-core processor which is powerful to make navigation satisfyingly swift and handles games and video streaming adequately as well. On the back is a five megapixel camera, which will be fine for Facebook snaps so long as your taking your photos in good lighting conditions. [MUSIC] Although the Kestrel doesn't have the sort of exciting specs or flashy design you'd expect from a top end phone, it does the essentials well, and is a very affordable way of taking advantage of fast 4G data. I'm Andrew Hoyle for CNET, and this is the EE Kestrel. [MUSIC]
