Cute Honda concept explores how we'll interact with self-driving cars
[MUSIC]
This adorable little guy behind me is Honda's augmented driving concept.
The automakers look at the way they were gonna control the self-driving cars in the future.
Now, on the outside, it looks lot like the Honda E electric hatchback, which should be going in the production very soon But the rest of it looks like more of a rounded over roadster look.
All the better to show off the new steering wheel paradigm here which is the whole point of this concept.
Now the exterior design looks a lot like the Honda E electric hatchback which should be going into production very soon, actually.
But the rest of the look is a more rounded over roadster.
All the better to show off Honda's new conceptual steering wheel, the whole point of this exercise.
For example if you get a little distracted and start looking away from the road the vehicle sence that is not a takeover give you a little bit more autonomous help when your attention returns to the road well you get full control of the vehicle they're actually I'm told 8 levels of autonomous blending between those 2 men.
You see, the point of this exercise is to explore how humans and self driving cars are going to interact together and how you're going to pass off control between the person and the machine.
See here the steering wheel handles all of the controls of the vehicle.
You'll double pat the steering wheel to wake the car up, you push for to go, you pull back to stop, and you can even swipe across the steering wheel to change lanes autonomous And any time you want to control of the vehicle, you just grab the wheel and start steering and all the while it's trying to understand how much control you want and how much control you're willing to give to the vehicle and when you're ready to totally hand off of the panel control just give the steering wheel and little push and it will slide to a position in the middle of the dash board.
Hence, you can even have the passenger grab the steering wheel if you want to share driving to his avail Now i don't know if I'm 100% sold on this steering paradigm.
I think may have to spend a little bit more time with it to get used to something like this.
But i do think there are some intresting implications here for handicap drivers who maybe won't be able to use pedals.
This can give you full control of the vehicle even one that is not self-driving.
As always, we wanna know what you think, so let us know in the comments below.
Would you drive a car with just the steering wheel?
And what do you think about this look?
