With the new watch OS 2 update for the Apple Watch, you would now create custom watch face backgrounds using photos stored on your iPhone.; To do this, you would first need to sync a photo album on your iPhone with your watch.
Launch the watch app on your iPhone then scroll down and tap on photos.
Next select sync album and pick the album you'd like to store on your Apple watch.
You can store up to 500 different photos on your watch.
Now on your Apple Watch use Force Touch on your current watch face to select a new one.
There are two new watch faces that incorporate your photos.
One option is called photo album.
This will cycle through all of the pictures stored in the album you synced to the watch.
Every time you lift your wrist and turn on the screen a different photo will appear.
The second is called photo.
This lets you just see one photo on the watch face.
By selecting this option you'll need to select customize in order to adjust the size and position of your photo.
Use your finger to drag and adjust the positioning of the photo.
And rotate the digital crown to zoom in and out until it's framed to your liking.
Once you're done press the digital crown and admire your new personalized watch face.
