Con artists are using an elaborate scheme to rob Uber drivers
Tech Industry
Our own Dara Kerr wrote about con artist targeting Uber drivers.
Alfred tell us a little bit about this.
Yeah, so this scam is pretty convoluted, but it's really sophisticated.
The way that it works is that, they'll call the Uber driver pretending to be from Uber.
They're very professional about it and they basically say we've noticed some activity on your account, Can you give us your user name-
Give us your information.
Your username and your password and then they also ask for your confirmation number because if you two-factor aunthentication they ask, you're gonna get a text message of a code now Can you tell us what that code is?
As a way to confirm that it's you.
But what they're really doing is using that to log into your account and then empty out your earnings.
And diverting your earnings to their own bank account.
Basically, yeah.
They
They're able to look at your transaction history and notice this person takes their money out on Sundays so I'm going to divert it to my account like a Saturday or something like that so we can get it first.
Geez so if you're an Uber driver I guess, anybody on the Internet.
Probably the rules of the road are, do not provide this information.
The biggest advice is, Uber would never call you asking for your username and password especially if-
They already have it.
Have it, yeah.
So that's basically what Uber has said as well.
