How do you avoid. And Phillip Craig with a buy a used -- you don't care about but. Forget that -- from a friend or family -- -- seriously so you're in the -- this -- you're in the car -- in the car world what what of the best ways to make sure you get a good deal and get the right information. When your in the market for a new -- -- there's a lot of good web sites out there it's become pretty well known that you can do a lot of research online just -- talked about. There are getting ahead on the research and dealers have become very used to people walking in with a sheet saying this is how much is our customers is how much I wanna get -- -- -- those accurate. They they are accurate. Yeah and dealers native -- -- gotten used to it you know kind of have had to deal with that. And a lot of dealers there -- -- -- I've talked to they say they actually don't make a -- money on the initial sale these days anymore. What they look for really -- say continuing relationship with customers and that does that maintenance fees and you know they want customers to bring the cars in and so I've actually talk to when dealers said you'll cut a better deal. Where people live closer to his dealership. Residents -- you know we've innocent -- you know. The offer low price but in the translate into the long term maintenance plans and extended warranty in what -- they make money from. From you and even if you don't pay them for -- because they make more money from. From the manufacturer. The one good thing about those groups is you sort of -- the long term test. -- a lot of -- -- reviewers really can't do when you when we get currently get a for a week and so we don't get a seat as long term problems that develop that so you do get those dinosaurs from that the users at. And sometimes their -- sometimes not so much. -- this one get one elephants that there this one guy had driven this -- but it a year ago and he'd been doing Dinah test site to see how many miles per gallon he was getting. I -- black Ford Fiesta for example and you'll -- they have it -- not -- -- -- a question for you did you know exactly what kind of car you were looking for when you decent started out. We sorrow for about 34 cars amusement test drives and I'm like this -- to get one and then went from there there's one thing I like about the the the sites that -- -- that -- Edmondson combo or out of my tells another one. Is that they AM they organize the cars by type. So you -- can so that might fit maybe and -- small minivan. We get a look at lot of comparable cars to see there might have been something you never even thought of that showed up and it's like oh -- that looks pretty good -- -- that'll. So once you have the car so crowd source -- it's that -- Buy local that's really interesting advice in the modern world with prices being solo or with margins being -- -- in part by locally get a better deal. Now once you have the -- you wanna keep it up and running. There are sites that'll help you do that they're also some pretty cool apps mobile Smartphone apps for car owners. -- One of my favorite little products this is actually it's a hardware it's called the car MD the plugs into the diagnostic port on every modern car. And if you're if you're idiot light is on it'll tell you why. And more advanced versions not this election which you reset it city and then if you just let the gas -- -- for once that's a useful thing to have. Yet this is pretty much the same technologies about a mechanics have yet and this is the way they analyze your cars if something goes wrong so yeah there are these consumer products out there that you need some information. Although we're really kind of beyond the stage where a you know actually tree mechanic can get in there and in work on your car you really -- -- -- professional -- a mechanic that can. Because they can do a lot of things because that there is. And these guys are much more complex than they ever were being in the past. And then there's. These two little sites that cover that'll help keep you on your maintenance schedule one of which has an iPhone app driver side effect covered before and repair hell repair -- -- -- It does as iPhone app that's pretty cool because the fact you can have a with UN on the road and if something goes wrong with the -- it and it'll. Find your local mechanic then I got in trouble for -- -- repair pal -- your mechanic dripping off because. It it it looks at repairs might be put it -- -- water pompous and I don't without warranty. And it'll show you how much -- -- areas firm at other places and can be frightening knowledge that -- be very good you might finally have a very a great mechanic. And then a couple things I wanna talk about there's little if you live in San Francisco and or in another city where -- just mad about. In San Francisco there's an app called park zine PA RK ZING that when you park it knows your location say I park can you tell it what side the -- -- on. This'll actually -- another iPhone app and this what you find gas prices local gas prices around. You can find that the lowest price you know in May be saved ten cents a gallon or something like. Just you gonna get the built in GPS and a car you does -- bad. And and they actually cannot force -- physically -- that you need to get the GPS baggage if you went -- -- stability control movement which you know -- nights for insurance purposes but. You know why it's it's too green and extra on this car and for me that's like if you do map that's by any GPS every year for like the next ten years. -- say to -- get the GPS or not. It's nice to have it there and that the the better thing I mean most of us have GPS and Smartphones now but the fact that you. You don't have GPS and a smart phone when -- at a range of a cell tower. And that's when you might need -- most that's -- it's nice to have -- in the factory installed in the car. Although it is yen in 2000 dollars a pretty standard price for factory -- GPS. But it you know like some -- -- -- yet that's. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- You know you could probably get away without doing -- many years as roads don't changes that. This one is actually control. -- you have your iPhone and you tilt it forward to back the ports backwards left to right and there's little thumb controls go up and down. And if you just take your hands off the control automatically it stops and hovers as a better let them. Fifteen minutes. At a 45 and 3040 -- minute charge yet anyway that's fun. You that'll cute little thing there the I have the power plug in the future of the power strip -- future this is a ten port USB hub and power strip. And it's very you know simple street the point you can actually leaving your computer and use it to connect USB devices or is playing a power adapter -- use it to charge. That test this out with a bunch of different stuff -- if -- -- to linger -- high power like the iPad. You need to plug in a power adapter which this one didn't come to become -- but -- ten bucks. But the dollar -- At home to report that thing I felt that it feels like there's a cracker Jack right it is a terribly -- but you know it hasn't -- -- -- you can mount it so I can put this on my desk. Power strip the future but let me in cars they still have you know the twelve volt a cigarette lighters which is totally archaic Denton and -- and a lot of guys are getting USB inputs for the stereos. And you know those are becoming just that you're defective charging -- -- cell -- one. I love direct voltage. Direct current standards let's take a call from. This is where's the button. There we go. Hey Michael you're on the line -- clean -- yet. Yeah I'm looking it buying -- used laptop for my wife. And what are you need to look forward to keep from. Getting. You know -- laptop. Well. First of all it makes you you wanna wipe that the machine would put on a fresh OS when you get it that you donate. -- have some spyware viruses on it from previously. The one thing the wears out on laptops of course to the batteries. It may not hold a charge and that's difficult to tell when the when you're just looking at the product that that somebody showing you. It's you might wanna check before you buy a laptop and see how much new batteries are from elsewhere because batteries do wear out. And that's that's really annoying when you buy a portable machine and it and it only lasts for thirty minutes. And -- batteries can be 150 bucks yeah they can be expensive media. I would also say actually the screen to the screen can if it's really a road warriors laptop -- the -- I've taken some abuse and that if you just put up a white. Back from on the screen and then maybe do black background it may be CE. Any protections -- pixels that sort of thing you can also other things look at firm you know scratches. You know asks with all honesty about water damaged his excellence -- O'Connor and the other might not get from -- with -- will be later computers they're selling it then and also of course always be asking why there's alien because if something doesn't work. There are more likely its value then if. Anyway good luck with that may not looking at netbook you're gonna going with the use full laptop instead of a low cost new laptop. Correct well part of it is is my wife needs windows XP first school. Yes which it was -- and -- machines down there yet you know -- check out referred to as well and a seriously and bill. Lenovo Thinkpads even Apple -- not be your particular case. They will have. Either. Returned repaired or. Never sold or contract machines and everyone out reaffirms or. Said I'm in the middle the major remodel on my home I want to trying future proof the technology. I'm currently planning to run cat six and RG six. That's ethernet and coax by the way to all rooms and a surround sound system -- my home theater. Any additional recommendations to try and future proof might set up. I've had similar issue and pass and I totally bungled it when -- walls were open. So I asked my Twitter followers and I got a whole bunch of really interest -- replies. And here they are. Vetted by me so number one cat five is fine for most cases cat six is extra -- but -- if you went -- -- that's -- that's. They're it's a higher capacity ethernet cable they should be able to Gigabit out of that he -- -- future for currency right you future proof stuff now a lot of people -- piper. Fiber -- that's future proof -- but it doesn't connect anything without adapters that don't do fiber. Don't forget to run audio wires if you're gonna do surround sound gonna wanna run 45. -- a pair now there are -- can get cables that have. Coax ethernet. Audio even some had a power in them and these giant that bundles with structure wired and get that if you want. You could go wireless. You will not get great performance no matter how what people are telling you wireless -- it for me -- -- wireless is fine for phones if for desk phones he can just have one phone plug in and then go wireless for the rest of the extensions. But. And wireless is actually fast enough for streaming but for real path -- that I've been -- wireless or -- isn't quite fast enough. Of someone suggested that in in -- Twitter -- using HDMI but that's a point to point from like receiver can he be so wiring for -- demise art. The best by far. The best advice that I got on went to do on the walls -- open is run not wires but conduit which is -- Flexible plastic -- From one point in each room to a central location your wiring closet it -- called which has noise insulation and air conditioning or events. Run everything horrendous big pipe and put strings in their -- an issue wires through that is true future proofing. The thing you can just pull new wires through -- -- left having to open him up. -- -- -- -- can be a pain in the neck. And that we can run whatever wire we haven't thought of yet in the future yeah there's no real future -- wired because who knows what's gonna come yeah. -- We got a email from -- and -- as my laptop -- -- -- -- want to do a clean reinstall the Windows Vista operating system. That's your problem right there. Vista RA go to seventh briefly. -- one dilemma the computer happens to be my iTunes home computer right you'll my music video and -- that thinking. I'm dreading the migration of everything to either my desktop which is -- Windows 7 operating system it. Or maybe an external drive I suspect I'm going to lose all my smart play lists the far worse. Might -- progress for the games that I'm playing -- don't want to restart plants versus zombies. Urea is there a better easier way to move my media how to I think my game progress -- searched high and low for how to do it my hard disk. If I happen to find my iPod backup file my laptop -- the machine can I just move that over to Windows 7. I hate this Apple control crap. -- -- is actually remarkably simple solution for you just go to the file menu in iTunes that library and backup to disk and this'll actually pitcher in higher. Library playlist play counts reading solid chunk. Onto dvds or CD's -- -- -- large library it's clearly doesn't work and ultimately we of how to from cnet's own Donald bell. There's -- audio expert on at how to basically backup. You're Europe thing to a hard drive your library to -- drive or just moved over to another computer -- for the app back ups those are stored in the actual phone or device back up files those are separate from your library I believe Apple has -- support knowledge database where it tells you where those are. How they're -- how much space they take up. So if you actually doing you restore or back up as a as another device file it'll wipe out those those -- save settings you have. But there's there's a solution on the horizon -- So it doozies social game networks a couple -- plus plus an open -- and both these have network game saves opened -- specifically. So what some games will do is what you savior your game progress up in the cloud. And then sync it back down to a new games have yet again money I patter of the iPhone. You can -- -- upload your progress mentality it's another device so I'd recommend going Sharon making making sure to see if I -- thinking do you have do that. Windows also has transfer utility and today you can transfer you know the whole -- if -- moving -- new computer you can transfer everything from. One -- to another and and that's -- -- to in this case and I don't know that I'd assume that would get all that Apple. You know iTunes settings and all that with it. Here's a question from Paul and email says my back to gotten out of control back -- have gotten out of control F ten USB drive. Three computers and lots of CDs several hundred. Containing more than a decade of backups. Can you suggest they program that can give me printouts of the files and each of these media. Such as directory to help me figure what I have what I don't need and what is duplicated also there -- foolproof way. Are foolproof program that I can use to help consolidate everything and eliminate the many duplicate files. That have been backed -- more than once. None of my backups of drives are incremental I just backed up hold directories multiple times as I felt the -- -- -- was needed and using PCs. And we just got a related question from a drain Stillwater a recently upgraded to Windows 7 and it seems that my hard drive storage or shrunken happen I have. Double or triple copies of the same file. Is their way to sort and delete all the copies in the state of the same files -- an easy way. -- or any help. Wow. Hundreds of CD's of back up this is what happens -- to incremental backups yes that is. Well what I would recommend just -- thinking of actually -- just my initial suggestion was. Don't reuse if you don't -- file -- that is if you're lucky and how you manage your files. You just just copy everything all your whole directory structure -- haven't changed too much into a single place get a new. Drive I -- a terabyte drive or two TB drive or an array like the Drobo or something and copy everything over there using not standard windows copy. But something like Teracopy which the free download. It or sync back which is a backup application and control it and how you want if you look duplicates either ignore over right oldest or renamed and that we -- of everything in one place but there are ways actually -- -- new stuff. Yet so I'm I mean before India -- -- answered the the part about actually putting out what's in the directory. There's a simple windows. Hack kind of it's officially from Microsoft we're having knowledge base article linked in the show and -- and this lets you print out a directory so if you just play that CD in and hit print from. From I know once of the -- from file explorer. You know you can just get that that simple print out that you can look at later and then find that disk so clear discs are labeled. Fifty otherwise they suggest -- out while one of apps from a Lifehacker ran up we have linked in -- -- -- from two years ago stuff they can he duplicate your files on -- -- so clearly use you know something like Teracopy get them there in the first place and but this can actually kind of breakdown that are some tools listed listed -- -- that -- -- can tell you. When the -- made what kind changes a thousand how the -- differ. You know Paul life I feel for you because. Dealing with a giant set of mishmash data is -- really no fun but I I'm gonna. Take your situation as a lesson for everybody else don't everybody else get to the point the Paul is right now because dealing with. Literally hundreds of thousands of files some are duplicated with changing directory structures is a real pain in the behind. Started and parental backup scheme. Early on. There's lot of good -- -- that's the download.com. And great one you can set of all sorts of different types of back at schemes and it will. Look at what's been updated 1000 updated -- only save those two years here back up storage device via. And occasionally take a good long hard look to your files and decide what you really need. In his eventually if you just keep -- reading these things happen possibly -- CDs don't last forever either yes or you -- That might my method for this -- in a nutshell what that one last one is some. Every time you upgrade your computer the hard drive is way bigger the last hard drive -- you have room actually -- an old computer with an overflowing heart Gartner -- -- space. To get a new -- -- and he got all those extra space he just copy everything over you and that does two things first of all you don't have to lose everything in you can kind of count on search in the next generation mean better -- -- the last -- find your stuff. And secondly media does DK. So every time you upgrade copy everything over the new one that refreshes all the bits and do that every year or two or three. Then basically keep your your files going and you do end up at the end of light -- with a gigantic mishmash of data but by then -- police are available by four. And be sure where we put that. You know duplicate that has yet and a copy that and single point of failure and storage so cheap now that. Angel from San Juan writes I currently own a Dell Dimension -- -- fifty desktop which is about five years old it's still pretty good for most regular tasks. But it's showing its age when using hand brake to convert dvds into a video format compatible -- Apple TV your Xbox. It's currently taking twice in videos run time to encode H -- video. Some looking to get a new desktop that will be mostly dedicated to converting my dvds using hand brake and I'd like to know what would be -- good CPU and GPU combination for the task. I'm perfectly okay with either purchasing your opponent separately and building of the computer myself -- buying retail. I'm also okay with either windows or Mac I'd like -- system under 12100 dollars total. Very interesting question now hand brake -- CPU bound as far as I know the current version does not use the GPU at all I know you also wanna play some games so that's that's a different discussion. So for hand brake. I do all my encoding on a two year old MacBook and it takes most movies about forty minutes which means of getting about two to three X encoding performance. Any modern sixty. -- keep you should be fine with faster -- of course including more quickly yet. What it says that he became the things that are part Canada and you might suggest is you know if this is money that you're just using this computer for all times by cheap you know 3400 dollar tower that -- -- thanks -- You know -- three -- five very you and I seven if you could swing it Intel processor.
