Not just cool, because it's a Watchmen app for your iPhone, but it's also an MMO, which means you can play >> Really? >> In, in sort of the Watchmen universe on your iPhone against people all over the world. >> Has there been a massive multiplayer online game for the iPhone before? >> Yeah, Brian Tong and I were trying to figure that out. I think maybe Tap Defense has some online play, and there's >> Yeah I mean, >> Things like live poker and chess, but. >> They're [inaudible], you know, I mean I don't know if you can consider, but like those Mafia games where you can kind of >> Yeah. Yeah. >> Interact with people all one, but nothing like in a real community. >> I haven't seen anything like this where you can actually, like, you have the character and, >> Yeah. >> Your traditional MMO, sort of, >> That's pretty cool, have a little breakthrough there. >> Yeah. >> All right. Look at what I got from the PMA show, because I love sticking cameras on things. It's part of that whole car tech video thing we do. This is a really cool mount that is the odd claim saying it is certified up to 200 miles per hour on an airplane. Huh? >> I would be crashing if I were an airplane. >> But in an airplane, that stalls me. >> That seems kind of slow. >> Right. Depending on the airplane. >> Or landing. >> But it's certainly good for, you know, up to anything that goes helicopter speed. More importantly for all of us in the real world, it's great for automotive shooting. And so many folks love to put a camera on their car, especially a video camera, and roll as they go to their favorite drive or what have you. They're also gonna make one like it to go onto a Harley Davidson steering gear. I don't know exactly what that looks like, but they're gonna make one that fits right on it. It's called the Fat Gecko, from a company called Delkin, [phonetic] no Belkin, [phonetic] Delkin. >> They're gonna get sued for that. >> In a minute! I'm gonna sue them just as a, as an emikis. I would like to know how the games from Windows work on Macintosh using Windows through the boot camp? And how you use the middle button from the mouse to open new sites in the, in a new tab. Because when I use it here it opens the dashboard. So how I change this? Thanks. Bye. >> I just want to say before you guys answer that one, if you hover over that video on YouTube, this pop up comes up and says, sorry about my broken English, so complicated. >> That's very good. >> Got a good sense of humor. I didn't think his English was broken at all, actually. >> Not at all. >> So as far as the, the setting go Brian >> Yeah, the first part. >> Through all, I'll, I'll walk him through here if you explain it. >> Okay. Yeah, so the first part, you mouse by default when you click on that middle button will go to expose. But if you go into your system preferences you will see an expose and spaces icon. Click on that, and from there you want to go into the expose tab. And if you go down on the bottom there's an option that basically you can change to turn off that feature. So every time that you accidentally hit that middle button you will not jump into the dashboard features. So that, that's really how you can disable that from getting in the way. >> All right, and then as far as gaming goes on the, on the boot camp. That's when you install Windows in it's own partition, and you boot into Windows on the Mac. It's really kind of up to your hardware. I, I've had no problem playing most games on a boot camp partition. I've played Spore [phonetic] like up through the space level on the Windows partition. And then it crapped out. I don't know if it was a Spore problem, or a Windows on a Mac problem. But I've, I was also playing on an older Mac Book Pro. So, you know, if you don't have the, the Mac Pro, for instance, and you've got, you've got just a Mac Book, your video card isn't gonna get the same kind of frame rates that you would get in a suped up gaming PC, but it should be able to play the games. >> Okay, let's go to the phone calls at 888-900-CNET. 888-900-2638. I'm, I, you guys recommended the Mac Pro for me last week, but >> Right. >> In the meanwhile I'm trying to get a free antivirus for my Windows machine. >> Doctor Merrit. [phonetic] >> Yeah, there's, there's several out there. They're all pretty good. In fact, if you go to download.com in our securities section we have editors picks of our favorite security stuff. So you can just page through there. Number 1 rated at download.com is AVG Anti-Virus, the free edition. As long as you're not using it in a business, which you wouldn't be, it's absolutely free to download and use. And it's very good. There's also a Vast Home Edition and a VERA Anti-Ver, Anti-virus. They're both very good as well. AVG Anti-virus rated just a little better in updating the definitions and being able to protect it. But all three of those are great choices if, if you just want us to pick one I'd say AVG Anti-Virus. >> Yeah. And I've been using AVG a lot lately, and it, it works really well. So try that one out first Nathan and see if it goes well for you. Michael in Missouri has a question about following news on Twitters. This is interesting. Hey Michael, welcome to the show. >> Hey, how's it going? First of all I'd like to say I like your new haircut. >> Thank you. >> Everybody has been noticing Brian's haircut. >> Not much of it. >> Anyway, yeah, like I hear like a lot of people at CNET and like wheel laport [phonetic] and a lot of your big tech people, talking about like how Twitter is becoming like the new place for news, like breaking news. >> Yeah. >> And like I have all my friends on Twitter that I follow and stuff, but like they never like really report any like news. And like I was wondering who you guys follow to get that news? >> Well Tom's got a good theory about how to really, kind of, meta your Twitter universe to follow news. >> Yeah, I mean, you can follow CNN's or CBS News and you'll get some breaking news that way. But really my recommendation is to follow a lot of different kinds of people in a lot of different places around the world. So, you know, follow the Lee Laports, and the Robert Scobals, [phonetic] if you can take his amount of Twittering. And then also follow some of the, the lesser stars of the Internet that do more specialized stuff. People who are engineers, or, or people who are in the, in the programming space, or authors, like maybe Neil Gain [phonetic] and Jonathan Culton. [phonetic] And then just look for friends that are in different places around the globe. Like just regular old folks. And what will happen is you may not be following the person who's on the ground when the plane crashes and gets the picture and posts it on Twitter. But it'll get re-Tweeted, it'll get passed along by different people who see that original post, and it'll get to you. And I would actually love it if I could actually get some good software on there. I was going for a laptop dock, but then I decided, nah, maybe not. So I was thinking, do you have any great software, or hardware, or anything for the 13" Mac Book. Well, anything that's appropriate for 10 year olds. >> Yeah, but Nick, like what type of stuff do you, are you looking for games? Or what type of things are you looking to do with it? >> I don't know. Anything that's really cool. I don't really know >> Anything that's really cool. I >> Well, Quick Silver would, that, that's a cool piece of software for productivity, as far as being able to switch between programs and do things in shortcuts. So >> I tried that. Never mind then. I mean, there, there's a few. If you want to talk about good software, just even from a backup standpoint. I've religiously talked about Carbon Copy Cloner. It's literally one click backup an exact carbon copy of your computer to an external hard drive. What other stuff do I use a lot. If you like to do screen captures a lot of time you see like maybe a YouTube video or you want to send, you know, some sort of file like that to a friend, there's some really fun screen capture tools that do video in high definition. One of them is called I Show You. That's a pretty fun one as well. I don't know if that's along the lines of stuff you're looking to mess around with. >> Yeah. I tried that. I hated the giant green word that said, I Show You Demo. >> Yeah, you gotta buy it. >> Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I know. >> To make the green word go away. And then it's actually awesome. But it is, if you want free stuff go to OpenSourceMac.org. That's one of my favorite places to just dig around. They refresh their listings every so often. And they've got the obvious things like FireFox and Mirro. [phonetic] But if you dig down there's lots of cool utilities, there's peer-to-peer filing sharing stuff that I, that I've discovered through here, like Transmission. Queue emulator, a free way to run Window's apps directly on the Mac without having to pay for some sort of VM ware. It gets down into programming tools. It has the Vidalia way of running the onion router. So that, that ought to keep you busy for a while just plowing through all of this different stuff and trying different things. >> What's that name again? Good deal. >> Coming up a nifty Gmail tip, but first we sent Molly Wood to Las Vegas to cover the photo manufactures associations big camera show this week. And here's one of those cameras that really, really, really caught her eye. ^M00:11:28 [ music ] ^M00:11:33 >> Hi, I'm Molly Wood from CNET.com here at PMA 2009. I'm taking a first look at the Sony CyberShot DSC-HX1. Now this camera caused quite a sensation at Sony's line show press conference just a few minutes ago. Like many of the cameras we've seen so far at PMA, it is a mega zoom camera with a 20X optical lens here. It does have optical limit stabilization, of course, as you'd expect for that kind of zoom. But there are a couple of other really promising features about this camera. The first is it's burst shooting mode. Sony says that this camera can take up to 10 frames per second of fast moving action, and deliver it at 9 mega pixels. So remarkably clear photos, even though they're moving so quickly. The other interesting feature about this is its panorama mode. Sony says you could take 100 photos in a sweeping motion and it could be stitched together into a panorama in less than 1 second with the cameras onboard processor. Now we didn't see Sony stitch together 100 photos, but we did see the sweep panorama in action. And once again, it was very impressive. Of course, we'll want to get our hands on it and try it out in a while. I was also excited to see that the CyberShot DSC-HX1 can take full HD Video 10ADP, in fact. And it comes with anti-blur technology, so that you get better photos in low light situations. All in all, this looks like a very promising camera. It's set to debut in April for about $500. Forget that. >> Yeah, they'll do the thing where they take the pictures for you while you turn, but they don't stitch them together. >> No. And, and she said it in a second is all it takes. >> Yeah. 20X optical zooming, nothing to sneeze at either. >> No. And that mechanical shutter is what they're talking about for it being able to capture motion very, very crisply like the guy throwing the bottles around, which is a bar I'm gonna drop in on later if you want to join me. >> Oh yeah. And I want to select a few ports, and able port forwarding from my Mac to the virtual machine. >> Oh, you want to do port forwarding and open box. You know what? I don't use Open Box, but let me do a quick look around here and see if I can find out. I didn't know that, that was your question. So you were using Open Box specifically. Which, anybody doesn't know, OpenBox.net they give you a free open source version of virtualization on your Mac. So something like VM ware or parallels you can get absolutely free. That might be another Mac program for our earlier caller to mess around with. You know, I, I, I'm afraid we're gonna have to throw this on the mercy of our chat room and forums. Two of the biggest names out there. Hello Van, welcome to the show. >> Hey guys, what's up? I have a question about the iPhone and Blackberry Curve. >> Okay. >> Right now I'm on Sprint and I'm thinking of switching over to AT&T just to get an iPhone, and I do a lot of text messaging. And I already have an iPod Touch, so I'm kind of over like the whole iPhone thing that people can't still get over. And I'm just wondering which one would you say is better for just like stuff like texting and making calls and all that kind of stuff. >> Well, everyone. You know, knows, that I'm THE Guy, THE human who actually got an iPhone and took it back. it was largely because of the keyboard. Because I didn't think I was ever gonna achieve my typing efficiency again. Although Tom and Molly, then after I took it back, then told me, oh no, it takes 6 to 12 months before you get back up to full speed for a lot of people. But for me that was a big, big problem with the touch screen. But I'm far from the majority on that one. BT? >> Yeah, really it just sounds like you just want to be able to text easily, right? Is it? Hello? >> Yeah, pretty much. >> Do you, I mean do you really have a preference between touch screen or a keyboard, like in your experience? >> Well I don't really like the iPod keyboard as far as I've used it, because it like, sometimes you like try to press stuff and it doesn't like press it right and stuff like that. And I can't really type fast on it. And even though it has, like iPhone has a lot of really cool apps, I don't really use them ever. So like, I just really can't decide, because of only the web-browsing problem, because Blackberry's web browser isn't like as good as Safari, obviously. >> Nope. Yeah. Yeah. >> You know. >> I, it's. It just sounds like to me that it just comes down if you really want a physical keyboard or not. I don't know. >> Dude, go for the iPhone. Take it from someone who didn't. Go for the iPhone. And another reason why, and yes the touch screen got in my way, but the interface of texting the way that it threads the conversation on the iPhone is so beautiful and nicely laid out. On the BlackBerry it's so ugly. And it also, as far as I know, you can't really do a lot of options with how you collapse the thread, or if you're just seeing the [inaudible]. It's just, it's icky. I don't, I, iPhone's the way to go unless you're hung up on that touch screen. >> I think, I think the biggest thing that gets overlooked is the smartness of the keyboard. Because it, actually when you press like a letter, let's say if you have like the letter A and then you want to hit Z, there's not many words that have AZ next to each other. >> Yeah. >> So it actually narrows the target space. So that's why people that first see it they think every kind of key is treated equal. But as you type in letters, the target space to hit increases or shrinks depending >> Interesting >> On the, on the pattern you use. So that's why it's really smart. So. >> Yeah. Anyway, that's, I, I think we're all kind of feeling iPhone unless you got an extremely strong preference for a physical keyboard, then you're talking about a BlackBerry. >> Yeah. I, I get misspellings all the time from the iPhone trying to be smart. >> Yeah. My wife has never, she has an iPhone and I get the weirdest messages from here. >> I got it. I'm bad enough at typing without having it try to help me. >> Right. >> I need to correct myself. I said, I said Open Box earlier. It's Virtual Box is what our caller was talking about. >> Josh. And when I go into that you'll see this checkbox that says, keep this window on the screen on all spaces. >> Okay. >> What our questioner earlier, on an earlier show was asking is, can I keep a space static in one monitor while moving them in the other. You can't do that. We were right about that. But you can fake it up. Christopher points out with a float you can have the Safari down, let's say this is in a second window, and when I click through the spaces it stays there. >> It stays there. >> So I can click all through the spaces and it's as if Safari >> Yeah. >> Is in every window. Same instance, so the chat room keeps scrolling like that. And essentially you've got a fixed space down there, even though you really don't. >> Yeah. >> And you can do it to multiple windows. If you had to have, want to have >> Oh really, more than one? Okay. >> A couple of things down there, you can set both of them to stay afloat. >> That's a great work around. >> And stick in the different space. >> You can truly see that being useful if you have like your chat program right? Let's go to line 1 and we're gonna take a car question here from Gary calling in from New York. Hello Gary, welcome to CNET Live. >> Hi guys. My parents are looking to get a new car. And they're, basically their top two choices are the new 2010 Lexus RX and the GLK 320. And I'm, my question is, which do you think is the better buy in terms of car tech and value? >> Yeah, this is gonna be a tough one, because we haven't had the new RX in for testing yet. We've got a, we've got a good slideshow about it, which we have up on CNET Car Tech, at cars.cnet.com. And one of the things we like, but haven't tested yet, is this new controller they're gonna have in the console where you kind of put your palm over it and it's almost like a sort of a game controller. And you move around the screen moving a curser through this physical controller and with hepatic feedback, so it goes clunk, clunk, clunk as you go across various selections. I've tried it out in a mock up, at a kiosk at one of the car shows and it was really cool and very intuitive. On the other hand though, it's not like getting it in our garage and really trying it. On the other hand, we can go look at the Mercedes, which we have reviewed, and the GLK series we had a 350 in with a fourmatic all wheel drive. We gave it a pretty good, but not stunning 7 or 3 stars. As you dig down into it we like the performance a lot. We weren't that impressed by the cabin tech to be honest. that's not always been a Mercedes strong suit in their lesser expensive cars. So I feel like the RX is worth definitely leaning on and trying out and giving it a good run against the GLK, but I can't give you a definitive. If they're really into the tech part, they're gonna love that Lexus. They, they do technology so eloquently. And I think that Mercedes GLK is ugly. It doesn't look like a Mercedes to me. It's too creased and too square. It doesn't print Mercedes. But that's just my taste. So that's about all I can give you for now, unfortunately, until we get the review in. All right? If your friends are on their phones and you're on GMail, maybe stuck in the office, you can still text message with each other. Here's Molly Wood again to show you how. ^M00:24:34 [ music ] ^M00:24:40 >> Hi, I'm Molly Wood from CNET.com here with a quick tip on how to send and receive text messages from GMail Chat. Now this feature comes to you from Google Labs. It's actually not enabled by default. But it's super handy for those times that you know someone's not at their computer and you can certainly type an SMS on your keyboard faster than you can on your phone. Okay, so here's what to do. In GMail click Settings up here in the top right corner. You'll be in the General Menu. So from the links at the top click Labs. Now there are a ton of features here to choose from, but let's just scroll down or do a find for SMS. Now click the Enable radio button here and then click Save Changes at the bottom. Okay, now head over to the Google chat menu on the left side of your inbox. Start typing the name of a contact and you'll see a new option here that reads Send SMS. Click it, and if you don't have a phone number for that contact just enter it and click Save. Then a little chat box comes up and you just type a message and hit enter. Please answer this question on CNET Live. >> Okay, I dug around a little on this, so I went over to the folks over on hauppage systems, they make a lot of great TV tuner cards. So do a lot of other companies, it's not definitive to them. But one thing I found as I dug around their support docs is whether you got an internal or an external, and you see both types right there. A lot of it comes down to software. So, for example, they have Win TV2000 is their application that runs on their cards. And they say here in the support notes, your VGA Card, the display output card on your machine, must support overlay, because that's how the closed captioning is put over the image behind it. I didn't realize that. So that's one thing to look at. And they have a chart of all the VGA compatible cards, a recent run down here, that support overlay. I don't, I don't know what card you've got, so go check that out over at hauppage.com [phonetic] is their website. Hauppage I guess >> Is that how you pronounce that? HAUPPAGE. >> Hauppage? Says he checked out Apple TV, not really for him. It lacks the video support. His videos are in AVI, Divic's, [phonetic] and XVID [phonetic] formats, and iTunes just doesn't have the support he wants. So all I need is a device that can stream audio and video, DIVICS and XVID formats are must, to my TV via WIFI. HD would be a plus. >> Yeah. >> He would like it, but as long as he can get that done. >> If my browsers unfreezes I'm gonna show you a product from Net Gear that I've fiddled with, I don't own it. It's in their digital entertainer series. They have 2 or 3 of these models, and you'll find it under their, their media devices thing. This is a device that'll bring up audio, video. Yeah, it's under entertainment on the Net Gear site. It's kind of like an AV shaped box, so it's gonna fit alongside a DVD player, what have you. So it's meant to be stacked. You got tuner digital media receivers where they have that category, and they can handle anything. I believe these are 1080P output compatible. Obviously, HD output. Digital entertainer HD, elite, and the digital entertainer. They run from $200 to $430 bucks. These are not the cheapest products out there. But I got to say, I like the menuing system. They were buggy when I tried them, but that was a year ago. I suspect they've gotten a lot more eloquent and there are 2 newer models there.
