CES In Depth dives into Nvidia's Project Shield
-Now we have something very cool to show you.
NVIDIA announced a new gaming console and here to give us a scoop on it is Ujesh Desai, NVIDIA's Project Shield is in front of us.
So I'm very excited to finally see this.
This is very cool.
So can you tell us a little bit about it and what your goal list---- to introduce the shock everyone with this?
-Sure.
So, you know, a bunch of us in NVIDIA are gamers, actually a lot of us over here were gamers.
We love playing games.
-That of a shocker.
-So we kinda wanted to start first with building something that we would love ourselves.
So, we knew on the console side, you know, you got folks at Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, they're doing a fantastic job.
You know, doing the stuff for the console gamers.
What about the PC and Android gamers?
You know, it's a huge eco-system anything from free-to-play and all the way to premium games.
-Right.
-So we said, would it be cool if we have a mobile device, you know, gaming portable that was built for open platforms for PC and Android?
So that's what we've got here in Project Shield.
So basically, it's got a built-in console grade controller 'cause as gamers, you wanna have a console, you know, that---- or a controller that feels good.
It's gotta feel great in your hands.
-[unk] the Xbox controller which I love, I mean----
-Yeah, you know what, if it's not broke, don't try and fix it, right?
I mean so, it's got a 5-inch screen that's full touch enabled so it's got a touch screen----
-And this is the latest version of Android?
-It's the latest version of Android.
We wanna make sure it had pure Android, you know, lots of Android
purist, they don't want anything on top of it so it's pure Android.
-All right.
-And then what we built is this little application that we called the Shield App.
And when you go into the Shield App, I will just kinda drive from behind, although you guys had me driving it from behind making my life a little bit difficult here but----
-Wow.
-That is good.
That is some skills right there.
-Basically the Shield App is an application that sits on top.
It'll have any game that you've purchased through Android automatically show up there.
You can go to Google Play, browse all the games that they have there as well and then probably the coolest thing
is you can actually, we don't have it here.
Obviously I didn't drag it over here but in your home network you could actually connect to your PC and stream all of your PC games and play it on here as well.
-Well, what you were saying which is kinda cool.
You could prop up in bed and play Assassin's Creed while, you know, while your wife is sleeping next to you.
-Exactly.
-Nice little benefit.
-Is this---- is this what guys think about it?
-Kind of, yeah.
-That is the drill----
-On how to have that, you know, quality time.
-Yeah, and you're spending time with her but putting the game as well.
So, yeah, I get that.
-So let's see what else can I tell you.
-Well, what
can you tell on the games?
-Yeah, can I---- well, so I'm gonna have to turn it around----
-Yeah, go ahead.
-Okay.
Let me---- all right.
So let's see, I'm gonna fire up a boxing game and---- do you wanna play?
-Sure.
-Yeah.
-Yup.
-So I'm gonna turn at him not over to you.
-Absolutely.
-So basically, the front sticks work just like they normally would.
You got A, B, wire the different, you know, moves you can do.
I think if you hit the right thumb stick, you can do an uppercut.
Let me actually show you one thing really cool.
Let's crank up the audio here.
The other thing we put in here with these custom 2 import stereo speakers----
-Oh, yeah.
-that are, you know, kinda like a Jam Box.
-Yeah, I can hear it from here, right.
-It's fully built-in.
-Oh, I heard the bell going off.
-Oh, yeah.
I haven't really connected yet, but oh---- that was me getting punched a lot.
-That was a good jab.
-You know, don't feel bad----
-How is it feel?
-Beat me up as well.
-Are you taking to kinda like intuitively?
-Yes.
You know what the controls like I said feel like the Xbox 360 the controller.
The
joystick pretty intuitive.
It feels good.
-Massive combination.
-And the graphics look pretty impressive, I'mma say.
-Yeah, so inside I should mention, that's got a Tegra 4 which was our other big announcement here at the show.
So it's a brand new mobile processor that we announced.
It's got a quad-core A15 CPU in it that it's also about our custom 72 core GPU in it.
So those are all the graphics or the processing what you seen on the screen now.
-I love how Roger's taking the interview and gaming at the same time.
-I'm trying to pay attention while----
-First in his [unk] maybe perhaps.
-Yes.
This is definitely a highlight or a milestone for my career.
-I mean---- and the thing I love about the device is, you know, you could play games on it but because it is pure Android, you know, a lot of games on my Gmail account.
I can play music.
I can watch movies.
I can read books on this.
I can read magazines, you know, Youtube.
-So anything you can do on Android device.
-Anything you do you on Android device you can do it here.
Here it's---- you know, crank up the music here.
Let's see----
-[unk] the Marilyn calling me----
-Again, this is booms and portable stereos.
-Yeah, that's right.
-Yeah.
-And it's
playing music right now.
-[unk] party actually----just
-Oh, yeah I was just---- sort like an iPod Touch----
-Oh, yeah I was just---- sort like an iPod Touch and just carry this from room to room----
-With a big controller with the book into it.
-With a built-in iPod Touch dock.
-Right, right.
-So it's like----
-So, I mean, we have to ask, I mean, is this---- what is the purpose of this Project Shield?
Are you taken on Nintendos this---- you're take-on on console games---- 'cause that, you're ahead of us.
For one thing it was very impressive, right?
I think that---- and the crowds were very surprised, I think very pleased to see this during the press conference because it's just sort of,
it doesn't really fit in in the category.
So I'm just curious for NVIDIA.
What's the intent behind this device?
-The intent was to build something that we wanted to use ourselves.
-Okay.
-It's nothing more, nothing more than that.
I mean, you know, a lot of times people try to put you in boxes, you know, that's a console gamer.
You know---- and then when, you know, sorry, it's a PC gamer and then when the console comes out, every year you see this when the refresh happens.
Oh, this is the year the PC is dead.
And it just never happens.
PC gamers, you know, still play on PC.
-Right.
-Now, I see
a lot of the tech reports going, man, look at all these tablets and everything, you know, second screen I think---- now the console is dead.
You know, and that's not true either, all right?
I'm a gamer, I got two consoles at home, a tablet, a phone, a PC.
I just like playing games anywhere.
-So I think this absolutely looks sexy.
When can I buy it?
-So we're targeting this Project Shield right now.
It is a product we are going to bring it to market.
And right now we're targeting Q2 of this year.
-And how much will I have to pay for it?
-We are going to disclose that as we get closer to that
product availability.
-Is it gonna be close in range to what you would typically pay for a portable gaming system?
I mean, something in that----
-You know, we gotta think through it.
-Okay.
-'Cause as we just talked about right now, it's an iPod Touch with, you know, built-in dock.
It's got the console controller.
It's got speakers equivalent to like a Jam Box.
It's got not only your Android games, your PC games.
It's a lot for us to think through.
Right now we just wanted to build a great product.
-I gotta ask, you know, with this being a giant.
We've been to like selling hardware.
What do you think is gonna be the biggest challenge
for the company to focus on or that you might are worried about coming across because you haven't been in that zone before?
-That's a great question.
I think, you know, the biggest thing is, we are now going, you know we've always sold products to consumers, you know, through our partners.
-Uh-hmm.
-But this is pretty much our first direct-to-consumer product.
So we gotta really race our game and that's why we're making sure, you know, and it's one of the reasons frankly we called it Project Shield is because we wanna make sure it's ready.
You know, we're all gonna have an extensive internal beta
test that I gotta tell you, the company is really looking for it too.
-I could imagine.
-So we're gonna have really, you know, take out times, make sure we get it right and make sure the controllers feel well, the thumb-sticks, the depad, all the buttons.
Make sure the speakers are good and more importantly make sure the streaming is flawless.
-Right.
-You know, 'cause that's of main value proposition for the product so we wanna make sure streaming from your PC, you know, and basically a GForce GTX PC is what you need on one end.
-Right.
-And that would stream to here.
So we wanna make sure all of that, you know, works flawlessly.
