BMW's all-knowing, all-talking, all-driving car
Here at CES, BMW is showing some of the things they've been working on, such as highly automated driving, what BMW calls its personal copilot.
And also, more importantly, what you're gonna do in a car when it can drive itself.
Let's go take a drive So now I'm in BMW's 5 series with personal copilot activated.
I don't have to touch the steering wheel or touch the brake or accelerator pedal.
This is like an advanced form of adaptive cruise control and lane departure control.
The car is really doing all of its driving right now.
And I can just kind of enjoy the scenery.
Now with the car doing the driving, it's actually showing me points of interest on the main screen here.
If I wanna find out more about them, I can just use gesture control to do this, with my thumb.
And now it's giving me more information about something in the vicinity around me.
I can actually have it talk about it, if I don't wanna read the screen I can have it read stuff out to me by just doing this point gesture The Las Vegas strip is not actually in Las Vegas but rather on an incorporated land governed by.
And so it was telling me about the Las Vegas strip.
That's pretty cool stuff.
If I wanna get rid of the screen I just swipe to the right and back to my normal driving screen.
And again I get that the other points of interest around me.
BMW has also integrated Microsoft's Cortana as sort of a personal assistant for the driver.
So then I can use voice command to look for restaurants, even make reservations at those restaurants on the go, without having to touch a screen, or anything like that.
And I understand that they're not gonna restrict you to Microsoft Cortana.
If you have a favorite digital assistant like Google or Amazon Alexa.
You can use those instead, it'll be up to your choice.
Of course this is still demonstration technology, we'll see how it really comes out in the future.
So that's an example of some limited automated driving, plus the fact the car knows its surroundings, and can show you what's there BMW tells me that other features aren't gonna come out at once, but they will be releasing different ones within 12 to 24 months.
