Apple's iOS 10 hits public beta -- should you test it? (CNET's Open_Tab)

[MUSIC] It's time to parlay this conversation into what we're kind of experiencing in the iOS 10 beta. The public beta that is out. If you have an Apple device you can get it on your tablet, on your phone. Whatever the hell else they make. Have you played around with it at all? Briefly. Jacob put it actually on his iPhone. He refuses to put it on mine right now. Why is that? Because we talked about this today on 44 betas are BS. Well it's a number of things. I'd done the beta on my six plus last year, and the The releases for it aren't, there's no rhyme or reason for the releases. And then- Wait, what does that mean? And then the updates for the beta. There's no rhyme or reason. Because there's certain things that may not work or may work, like video games. Gotcha. [CROSSTALK] That's a developer thing. Yeah. And then when the full one comes out, there's sometimes a problem just pushing that through. Sometimes you just wind up having to download and force us. It's like, you know what? I'll just wait. Last thing I do, trying to make a phone call and have that be the one feature not working. Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's a safe bet that that will always work. It's funny, even my mom, who's very disconnected from keeping track of iOS update, she's always like Yeah. I'll wait till the .1 comes out. Just because I know I've got to let that dust settle a little bit. And she's not wrong. You really, you really have to shake the cobwebs out of that thing, before you can get a reliable [UNKNOWN]. There's just so much pressure to keep putting something out, to stay innovative, just to keep ahead That a lot of times we become the beta testers, even- Totally like don't be mistaken. They are collecting data on how the beta goes and taking that under consideration. So are you familiar with any of the new features, or is there anything about 10 that you're sort of psyched about? The text feature's probably fun back and forth, with my son, so forth When you lift it up and the notifications seems pretty cool, the swipe notifications. It seems like they are spending a lot more time on the lockscreen too, right? Yes, the lockscreen has some cool notifications. What I would love, and hopefully they are going to do it, is maybe under the settings where the 3D touch where you can enable or customize it because the only thing I really want to go to on the 3D touch really quickly from the settings.. . Would be to turn my hotspot on and off. I think that would be really cool. I mean, I'm not sure if they're doing anything with that. What else did they do with that thing? Well Todd, you're an Android guy. Right. Like myself. I've seen an iPhone. Have you touched one? I had, I think the last iOS I had was iOS 5. 5? So I had a This [CROSSTALK] He's touching it. I had the 4S or the 4. Right. So and then I went to Android. So you've been there for a while? Right. Me, personally, I am indifferent. I'm an Android guy because I happen to like that OS better. Right. I think if something came along attractive enough from An iPhone, I would switch, I've just never been presented with an opportunity, be like this is the time to switch over. Right. Is there something that would convince you to consider making the switch? I don't know. If the design was good enough. Yeah. I think that particularly the iPhone is sort of Being in kind of a holding pattern design wise. Right. I think the 4 was probably the nicest. And there was a throwback, was it the 6s had the glass back again? No. It was the- The 7 or? [CROSSTALK] The 4s was the last of the glass. Okay. [CROSSTALK] I like that I think you know you got a lot more variety obviously with Android. Totally. You got hundreds of different bulbs you can choose from. And that's a mixed blessing right- Right. You deal with fragmentation and issues like that. Right. And the fact that each manufacture has to modify the OS to fit their phone That's why you get a nexus. You have to wait six months or. Yeah that's why you buy a nexus. The nexus have had some really nice phones. Definitely. Mike, in the control room, tells me there is a question from the chatroom. Nicholas says if there is one thing he doesn't like about IOS 10, it is clicking the home button to unlock the phone because there was a big change with the notifications screen and the unlock screen, and on YouTube we had someone to ask I'm not sure if we know that definitively yet though. Did Apple fix the battery problems with IOS 10 on the iPhone 6s? I don't know about that with the battery stuff, it might be too early to tell. Yeah, I mean when you're in bed, you can never rely on battery. I mean, I would assume it burns through your battery quicker. I think one thing that's also overlooked when it comes to this whole IOS Android thing, is Money invested. I had the first iPhone, and didn't get another one again until the 4s, but I did get an iPod Touch in between that. And I've purchased a number of songs, speaking of which everybody's talking about purchase, and at that time Apple had you locked because the music was encrypted. Yeah. So between music purchases and movie purchases Apps purchased. Sometimes you've kinda just lock there more money on your library than your apps on your device and I do and I have like the first generation iPod touch haven't purchasing stuff too. I mean I'm well invested in that maybe if there's an incentive program when it say you wanted to buy an Android device and. And developers said, hey you want Angry Birds for such and such. You just switch it from IOS. We'll give you a discount or something like that. They may inspire a jump between. But that's probably another reason why a lot of people's probably stay. With where they are, they just defend it til then because no one wants to be on the sinking ship so to speak. All right, you have your marching orders Mr. Cook. [MUSIC]
