>> All I want to do is to be able to use the songs that are already on my iPhone as ringtones. Every time I think I got it figured out, Apple goes and updates iTunes and breaks it. But that has led me to one happy discovery. I can now not only add ringtones, but also add all kinds of other third party apps like Pong to the iPhone. I'm Tom Merritt, editor from CNET dot com. On this edition of Insider Secrets, I'll show you how to do it.

Thanks to Griffin DWB for inspiring me down this trail. He had a blog posting last week that showed me how to make my own iPhone ringtones, but then Apple went and broke that. But that allowed me to learn from him about App Tap. App Tap is a program that will allow you to install third party applications right on the iPhone, without even using your computer. Now warning, App Tap is sort of a geeky thing, they get, make no warranty that it won't break your iPhone. So be warned. I put it on my iPhone, my iPhone still works. Here's how you get it. Go to iPhone dot Noel River dot com. Download the version for your operating system, then hook up your iPhone, and run the software. Now it's gonna come up with a command line box that's gonna do all kinds of scary things, and it's going to put a dangerous symbol on your iPhone. But just sit back and let it do its work. After it's done, close out. Unhook your iPhone, and you'll see you have this interesting little installer icon right down here in the bottom right. Tap on that, and it will give you a list of the programs that you can download and install right from your phone, without hooking it up to a computer. One of those apps is Community Sources. You install Community Sources, you get all kinds of other applications not made by Noel River. One of those packages is Send Song. Send Song, amongst other things, actually emails songs from your phone. But one of the places it can send the song is to your ringtones folder. So I installed Send Song, and now when I go into Send Song I can choose a song, it asks me where I want to send it, I choose send to ringtones. Now when I go into my settings, choose sounds, and ringtones, there are the songs that I picked from Send Song. Now as you can see, I also have Pong on here, which frankly is kind of hard to play on the iPhone. What, it's fun having it nonetheless. Once again, App Tap is the name of the program from Noel River dot com, and there's all kinds of different apps you can install right from the phone once you install it. And don't forget, they make no warranty this won't break your phone, but hey, didn't break mine. That's it for this edition of Insider Secret, I'm Tom Merritt from CNET dot com. Enjoy your new expanded capabilities.
