5 new features in iOS 12

Apple has lots of new stuff to explore in iOS 12, including features to cut down on your screen time and personalize and emojis.
Now bear in mind this is the developer beta of iOS 12 so features are subject to change between now and final release.
Here are five new features in iOS 12 to look out for.

Animoji just got a whole lot more personal.
You can completely customize your own virtual avatar, called a Memoji.
Change everything from hair color, to skin tone, to facial hair.
Just like regular Animoji, your Memoji uses the Face ID camera to keep track of your facial expressions.
It even detects your tongue and picks up on where you move your eyes.
Once you've set up Memoji, you can send it in iMessage, or make calls in FaceTime as your animated self.
You can even make group FaceTime calls with up 32 people, with or without Memojis, but that feature wasn't active in this version just yet.
Apple wants to help manage your screen time with a new feature called, you guessed it, Screen time.
In settings you can see a break down of how much time you've spent on the phone and it also shows the most used apps.
If you tap into it you can also limit the amount of time you spend in individual apps by tapping the hourglass.
Or in the app limit section manage how long you spend in certain categories of apps like social networking or entertainment.
And Do Not Disturb has a new bedtime mode that stops notifications appearing on the lock screen and shows a dim display with just the time and date.
Rather than showing every single notification in one long stream, I always grouped them together by type.
So if you have multiple text messages, they'll all appear together in one stack.
You can open or dismiss them like you're used to, or choose the Manage option.
This brings up a dialogue where you can choose to deliver them quietly, or turn them off all together.
Apple has added a new measuring app that uses the camera to measure real-world objects.
Just tap to add points on the object and see the measurement on screen.
Some existing apps are also getting a visual overhaul, including stocks, voice memos, and books.
Siri now lets you create your orange shortcuts to make custom commands.
So if you wanted to say something like hey Siri, let's go on a bike ride, it could bring up the weather, directions on a map, and set a reminder to bring your helmet.
This will all happen from a new shortcuts ap which is not yet on the beta.
Instead you can see a simple preview of this in the settings.
Choose a suggested action from the list and then set a custom phrase that will trigger that action.
These are just a few of the new features in iOS 12, but there's many more to come, including AR games and performance improvements.
And, remember, because this is the developer preview, features are subject to change when the final version is release this fall.
