2022 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro: Better bit by bit
Speaker 1: That's right folks. It's time for the all new 20, 22 Toyota Tacoma. I'm just kidding. It's the same old truck since 2015, but I have come out here to beautiful Colorado and I think we're gonna take it up to past 12,000 feet. We'll see how she do. Now. Someone has been in this truck all day today, but it is finally my turn before I get into it, though, I do wanna show you some of the new things, because there are some new features that are pretty [00:00:30] cool and actually make this a better truck than before. Yep. This generation of Tacoma has been around for quite a while, but to subscribe to the, if it ain't broke, don't fix it mentality. However, we do see a few incremental improvements for 2022, starting with what's happening with the suspension. Now I wanna start down here with this. These are forged upper control arms, and it should give us a little bit more travel specifically in droop travel.
Speaker 1: So hopefully that's gonna make this ride a little bit more comfortable. If you move on here, we've got new design of the 16 inch wheels [00:01:00] and a wrapped around that is your Wrangler tires. Now you guys like I'm kind of a BFG gal, but well, you know, we'll see how these good years do. Uh, we've got a higher lift in front about an inch and a half. And if we go around to the back, well, first of all, have you guys seen this color? This is a new electric GL color. It is 100% the best truck color in existence. If you don't get this color, I will come hunt you down and you don't even wanna know what I'm gonna do, because this is the best color ever in the back. I've got a little bit of a lift about a half an inch, and instead of TRD pro in black, [00:01:30] we have it stamped right here on the bedside glamorous.
Speaker 1: Now the TRD pro is the top offroad spec trim and the biggest improvement you'll see for 2022 is in the geometry that front and rear lift. I told you you about while that translates to an approach angle of 36.4 degrees departure angle of 24.7 degrees and a breakover angle of 26.6 degrees. That's slightly better than last year. And it means that I've got more confidence approaching rocks in other obstacles. Sure. Their skid platings all around in the TRD pro, [00:02:00] but the increased approach angle means scraping is kept to a month. So we still have the 2.5 inch box internal reservoir shocks, but what's new is a stronger forged upper control arm and a repositioned ball joint Mount. And that means that those shocks have a little bit more rebound stroke. I feel like even though this entire trip has been over boulders during trails, head toss has been kept to a minimum and the ride feels really compliant.
Speaker 1: There are some drive modes for mud ands, sand loose rock, moguls, rock and dirt, and just plain old rock in these conditions. I've been using rock mode and engaging [00:02:30] the rear locker a few times to get up and over some of the hardest bits and the Tacoma. Well, it handles it all like a champ, just like you'd expect. Now, as I said before, this truck is essentially older than dirt. So don't expect any major changes under the hood is still the same old three point a five liter V six engine with 278 horsepower and 265 pound feet of torque. Now, if you can get a TD pro with the six speed manual transmission, I highly recommend that you do so as the six speed automatic while it's fine at these slow trail climbing speeds. It's [00:03:00] a literal dog on the highway. It just searches around and it plays, hide and seek with the rest of the powertrain. So what's the upshot here. I mean, yeah, the bones of this truck are old enough to have sat behind Jesus in third grade. That's true, but Toyota keeps making little tiny changes that make this already good truck off road even better. Now, is it gonna drive significant different from the 2021 model year? I mean, no, but better is still better.
