CNET First Look
WildChargerThe WildCharger is an innovative and effective product. But unless you're charging more than one phone at once, it's not a practicalpurchase.
[ Music ] ^M00:00:03 >> Hi, I'm Kent German and senior editor here at CNET.com. Today we're gonna take a First Look at the WildCharger. Now, we've seen a lot of interesting chargers in the past for cell phones. Some you can hand crank. Some are solar powered. But this one actually works by electricity, but there's no real physical connection between the charger and the phone, so it almost charges wirelessly. The primary thing is you'll see this big silver mat. It sort of looks like a place mat, a little smaller, maybe something the Jetsons might have used to. So it has a regular wall charger. It has a nice, long chord, so you should be able to maneuver it as you like. Just plug it in like that, and then you have to get an adaptor for your phone. Now, when we first reviewed this product about a year ago, it only accommodated the Motorola RAZR V3, but WildCharger just came out with this universal adaptor that fits quite a lot of phones. The adaptor has two parts. The primary thing is you'll see this tip right here. Now, the tip is interchangeable. The tip is actually what you insert in your phone's charger port, but you can get one with a micro-USB or other connections, so you can fit, really, a lot of models. It's magnetic, so it goes right there, on the other part of the adaptor. This has an adhesive disc here. I'm not gonna take it off in this case just because this is my phone. So you're gonna put that on the back like that. You're gonna insert the charger tip into the charger port. And on the back, you'll see they have these little silver bumps. These are actually metal. They transfer the electricity into the adaptor and then up into the charger port. All you need to do is place it on the mount like that. It's magnetic, so it won't really slip around even if you bump it. You can't turn it upside down, really, but you can put it on its side, and it'll be fine. All you do is plug it in, and you're good to go. It does charge in about an hour and a half, maybe a little more than that. It gives a full charge to an empty phone. So it definitely charges just like you would a wall charger. When I saw it before, I definitely thought it was cool, but didn't see the reason why you'd want to purchase this over a regular charger, especially if you had it in the box. But now that WildCharger supports more phones, and you can support as many devices that will fit on the mat, that makes it cool if charging multiple devices once, also the fact that you can fit all these phones. It is about $79.00. That comes with a charger pad and one adaptor. Additional adaptors are a little expensive. They're about $30.00, but it's definitely a cool product, definitely innovative, and it certainly works. But now that it supports more phones, I think they're actually is a compelling reason to buy it. I'm Kent German, and this the WildCharger. ^M00:02:19 [ Music ]
