Sony Vaio FW270With a sleek design, HD-friendly display, and a Blu-ray drive, the 16-inch Sony Vaio FW270 is a near-ideal portable entertainment center.
[ Music ] >> Michelle Thatcher: Hi. I'm Michelle Thatcher, Senior Associate Editor for CNET.com, and today, I'm taking a look at the Sony VAIO FW270. Now, you can see in front of me that this is quite a large laptop, and if it looks a little wider than usual, that's because it is. The display is actually a 16.4 inch display, and the reason for going with that measurement, which is a little bit unusual for a laptop, is that it provides the 16:9 aspect ratio that's perfect for viewing HD movies. So, as you can see, this is an absolute entertainment laptop. The screen size is just one of the entertainment-oriented features on this laptop. Of course, with an HD-friendly screen, you're going to also have a Blu-Ray drive. This one actually reads Blu-Ray discs but doesn't write to them. There's also a row of media-control keys above the keyboard, and the thing I like about this Sony VAIO is that they're a little bit retro these keys. They're actual buttons as opposed to the light-touch media keys that you see on most other media laptops. And finally, this system actually incorporates Doby Theater Surround Sound so that you can get a fuller sound for your movies and music than you would from an ordinary laptop. Now, I did listen to this and watch a movie on this earlier, and it's not quite stereo sound, but it is a very enjoyable experience and far better than most typical laptop sounds. Of course, this isn't just a media machine. It's also a computer, and as a computer, it functions very well. It has pretty decent performance from its P Series Intel Processor, and the keyboard, as you can see, has that individual key kind of pebble key style that you see on MacBooks. That's actually very comfortable to type on. The other thing that this VAIO has in common with the MacBook line is its sleek design. You can see that it's got a really nice filtering white design, and it looks far more attractive than many other laptops. I'm Michelle Thatcher, and this is the Sony VAIO FW270. ^M00:02:03 [ Music ]
