Shell Oil built a car?
Hey everyone Emme Hall at the North American international auto show De patic, and I have a question for you.
What does this Shell concept car have to do with the Mc Laren?
Specifically the Mc Laren F1, go ahead I'll let you think about it, let you think about it.
And Same designer.
I know, crazy.
Gordon Murray, who designed the McLaren F1, also designed this Shell concept car.
I think you'll see a lot of similarities.
It's pretty curvy.
It looks pretty good.
But really, the big story here is in the carbon fiber.
This concept car weighs just 1200 pounds.
And the carbon fiber is, instead of being stamped and formed and molded in the factory.
Instead Check it out.
It's like glued on there, right.
That's just crazy.
So that's gonna allow this car to built much more easily at a higher profile margin.
And maybe allow some of these cool, little city cars to be built a little bit easier.
Now this little guy can go about 90 miles an hour top speed And that's a limited top speed.
And Delfi's got an indoor test track here, so I'm gonna see how she do, hang on.
All right, got a center mounted seat here.
I've no idea how to close these doors.
Is there a button?
Look at that, carbon fiber, super lightweight.
All right, we'll see you in a minute.
It's not made for tall people.
[LAUGH] I can't' believe I just hit my head.
All right, seat belt, check.
And, let's see, do I need to push in the clutch?
It looks like I do not, so I'll put my foot on the brake.
Turn the key.
You've gotta be in here?
[SOUND] Okay, how do I open this?
There we go.
I need a handler.
All right, come on in.
Do I need to move?
I can't believe I need a handler.
They really don't trust me.
It's not you.
Here, watch my head.
I don't want my head-
Won't you come back.
I'm scared about my head.
Go forward a little bit.
So my foot's on the brake.
So you're there.
If you press the start button.
[LAUGH] It's fancy, there's a start button.
Go to hand brake.
All right, hand brake.
And it's just a simple pull on the brake, right?
And go into Drive.
And to Drive, that's it?
All right, so I'm in drive.
This car actually makes a lot of noise, I'm really surprised.
It's a 660 cc gasoline powered engine, but the difference in this is that it's been specially modified to have low friction components and that allows Shell to use some crazy thin oil that results in a 5% gain in mpg.
And this little guy's gonna get 100 miles to the gallon.
I've gotta tell you I'm being pretty steady on the throttle.
It's a little jerky, but check it out.
Let's do some donuts.
Man, I get so mad.
All right, no donuts, no donuts.
And this has got a 5-speed manual automatic.
So, this is kinda like what used to be in those old Volkswagens.
But with a fuel economy of a hundred miles per gallon That is pretty awesome.
Hey Kevin, what kind of fuel does this take?
Just standard 93.
Standard 93 fuel.
So right now, gas prices are pretty low, so this could still be something that you would want.
It would be cool to see this in electric, but again, this is manufactured by Shell to show that sometimes your oil components.
How do I open this guy up?
So would it be awesome to see something a little like this in a,
Yes, I'm sure in
I'm not sure if you guys do electric.
It'd be great to see this car in an electric, but what's awesome about this is that it really does show that something just as simple as changing your oil or using a low viscosity oil is gonna make a big difference in your MPGs.
So oil can be really not just a necessity, but it can be a benefit to manufacturers' cars and all the stuff that we're seeing upstairs.
Hey I hope you enjoyed this quick little trick here with the shell concept car.
