CNET First Look
Samsung SGH-i450It can't pass muster as a camera phone, but as a quality music handset, the Samsung SGH-i450 more than holds its own.
^B00:00:00 [ Music ] >> Hi. I'm senior editor Kent German here at CNET.com. Today we're going to take a first look at the Samsung SGH-i450. This is a Samsung phone. This is a music phone. Music is really a big theme here, and it actually does the whole music phone thing quite well. It is a slider phone. You can see I slide it up like that. It has a very nice display. It's bright and colorful, great menu system as well. Navigation controls, I found they were a little flat with the surface of the phone. They're pretty big though, so I didn't have too many problems. Keypad buttons are also flat, tiny yes, but slick as well. This is a dual slider phone thought, so it's kinda cool, kind of interesting. Like the Nokia N95, slide it down like that and you'll have this kind of quirky control right here. The other thing that's nice is when you do open the phone like that; the display actually takes a horizontal orientation automatically. This isn't touch screen, so I can't move my finger up and down here. But I can move my finger up and down the arc to go through the menus and to go through a long list of songs. This is a really nice control. It's unique. It's - haven't seen it a lot. But a lot of music phones don't give you that great way to really scroll through a lot of things quickly. You have to press a little firmer than I thought. A light touch doesn't do it. You have to really kind of get your finger in there and go up and down. So it does take a tiny bit of acclimation, but once you're there, it is really a nice control. The only thing that I found was a little odd is once I slid the phone closed, it goes back to the main phone screen, but it doesn't resume a vertical orientation. To do that I had to slide it up again, so that seemed a little odd. I really wasn't in love with that. Here, on the back, you can see I have a cameral lens. That is a two megapixel. Didn't take the best photos, so again, this is really a music phone. You do have a flash, though. Here on the top, you have a speaker. Has decent output. It made for pretty good speakerphone quality, music phone quality. Great 3.5 mm headset jack, which is always a plus on a music phone so you can just slide in your own headphones. There is a microSD slot. Not a whole lot of integrated memory on the phone, so 35 megs. So it's nice to have that other memory slot here. Overall though, pretty interesting phone. I did like it. Great music quality, pretty good call quality, and a decent selection of features. There's assisted GPS, there's stereo Bluetooth, and a few other things. Really, this is about music though, and it's one of the better music phones I've seen. I'm Kent German, and this is the Samsung SGH-i450. ^E00:02:07
