Qualcomm and Google's new WearOS smartwatches finally get better
Most of the time you might just use a smart watch like a watch.
Now that's what Qualcomm and google might be planning on for the next generation for [UNKNOWN] smart watches coming this year and next.
Qualcomm's next snapdragon wear 3100 chip is aiming at better battery life.
What it's doing is mainly enabling Better always on in traditional watchface modes to get that battery to last anywhere from a day and a half to a month depending on what you are doing with it.
This is enhanced ambient mode, which is basically replacing the ambient mode on Wear OS watches now.
It's a lower brightness mode that turns into a brighter mode when you turn it.
But it enables all the information you normally get in your smart watch, and it has brighter colors, it has the ability to have different types of designs, and a smoother second hand.
The improved ambient watch faces are aimed at giving traditional watchmakers a better palette to create better looking watch faces for the next wave of WearOS watches.
That could help fashion brands, great watches that stand out more and don't have watch faces that suddenly turn off or go black and white.
When battery life runs low, traditional watch face mode takes over on Qualcomm's new chips.
Which will extend battery life anywhere from a week to 30 days, depending how much you're using it.
This watch face mode only shows date and time, but Qualcomm plans to eventually add more features to it.
It's not going to be the same thing as using Wear OS, but it should allow watch face manufacturers to add a lot more functions and designs to the watch that you're seeing all the time.
Coming later on is Project Stamina.
An enhanced fitness mode that's going to be available on Snapdragon 3100 watches.
It's going to enable GPS and heart rate tracking to last up to 15 hours in a mode that's separate from a standard Wear OS smart watch.
Basically it just turns it into a dedicated fitness watch.
Now we're gonna have to hear more about how that works, but it sounds like there are gonna be dedicated sports brands bringing that feature into watches next year.
Qualcomm and Google's first watch partners using the new chips include Fossil Group, Louis Vuitton, and Montblanc.
We can also expect more to come.
Qualcomm says that there's an unnamed sports brand or several sports brands that are going to be bringing GPS functions to these watches coming next year.
And you can probably expect that a lot of the existing wear OS manufacturers, of which there are many, will start using these chips.
What does it mean?
Better battery life.
But how good?
It sounds like it's still a bit of a moving target.
And with Apple Watch 4 about to come out, we'll see how watches and watch battery handles in the coming year.
