The new, slim, $300 PS3 certainly sounds like the perfect move for Sony...with one very baffling exception. Molly Wood investigates on this week's Buzz Report.
Hi, I'm Molly Wood, and welcome to the Buzz Report � the show about the tech news that everybody�s talking about. This week, it�s PS3 price cuts, super-secure IE 8, and smashed guitars. But first, it�s the gadget of the week. The Gadget of the Week is the new, slimmer, CHEAPER PlayStation 3. That�s right. It�s a 120 gigabyte PS3, and the price goes down 100 dollars to 299. It�ll be available in stores around September first. For three hundred bucks. That�s awesome. See? Higher capacity, lower price, great value! There you go, Sony! That wasn�t so hard, was it!? And I�d say that Sony finally nailed it, except for one weird thing. They lowered the price of the PS3 across the board � and now the 160 gig model is 399, and the 80 gig model � is also 299. Just like the new 120-gig slim. They�re the � same price. So, anyway. You know. I mean, I guess Sony will sell more PS3s. The slim ones. And the big ones. And the 80 gig ones will make very sturdy huts over at the e-waste dump. In Apple news this week, the Wall Street Journal reported that The September Event will happen on the 9th, it�ll be all about a big update to iTunes and new iPods. The Journal�s sources say there will be NO Apple tablet announced at the event, despite feverish rumors of late. In fact, they say it sounds like there won�t be an Apple tablet until like 2010. People. Please try to remember. You don�t care. You�re not going to buy one, anyway. No one is. New iPod Touch! Woo! Focus. Ok, on to Microsoft. The company is touting a new study that found IE 8 is the world�s most secure browser! It found that IE 8 was the best at blocking phishing scams and �socially engineered� malware. Firefox was next, then Safari, Chrome, and finally Opera. ALTHOUGH, we should note that Microsoft FUNDED the study, which was conducted by NSS Labs. But you know, even if the malware and phishing results are legit? I don�t care. It�s all about speed for me. IE and Firefox are so DOG SLOW to load! I can�t take it! Maybe Chrome isn�t secure, but at least it�s fast. I�d probably download the, Phast Phisher or Super Speedy MalSurf browser over IE 8. I just do not have that kind of time. And finally, five California people are suing Facebook for violating their privacy by � as near as WE can tell � being Facebook and just doing what Facebook does. And we, the Internet, are just having a BLAST making fun of these people for not knowing what Facebook does! This ridiculous lawsuit calls Facebook a �data mining company� and accuses it of disseminating �private information to third parties for commercial purposes and economic benefit.� Ha! Crazy! Stupid people! Oh, wait. They totally do that. And then these idiots said Facebook changed its terms of service and didn�t tell anyone! Oh, wait, yeah, they totally did that. Everyone freaked. But never mind. These people are DUMB, they don�t know how Facebook WORKS! Yeah. Think of these idiots as like, aliens who just landed on earth. Just because we all KNEW our data was being shamelessly harvested, our privacy was being violated, and our personal information was being appropriated, owned, and re-used by Facebook doesn�t mean it wouldn�t be surprising if you were an alien. And before we go, let�s have a look at what�s clogging the tubes. It�s the second installment of the hit viral video series, United Breaks Guitars. The first song, and there will be three, grabbed over five million views on YouTube. The second came out this week. Now, since the first video debuted in July, it�s gotten MILLIONS of hits, this Dave Carroll guy has appeared all OVER TV and the media. And United United DID finally offer to pay for his smashed guitar, after all the bad publicity. But Dave said no. And why wouldn�t he? He�s super famous and United looks like idiots. Even more than usual. And that�s what happens in the world, now. So, dear EVERY BUSINESS IN THE WORLD. Shouldn�t the mere EXISTENCE of the Internet cause you to step up your customer service?
