CNET First Look
Pantech Ease (AT&T)Though we have a few quibbles with it, the Pantech Ease is overall a smart hybrid that will please both grandparents and grandchildren alike.
>> I'm Nicole Lee, Associate Editor for CNET.com, and this is a first look at the Pantech Ease for AT&T. As you can see on the front there is a very nice environment, 3.2-inch touch screen. It's very nice and colorful. Underneath the display you do get the call key, the middle select key as well as the end power key. Underneath that you do get the back key. On the side here are the two volume rocker keys as well as the charger jack. On the other side you do get the screen lock slider toggle as well as the camera key and the voice command key. On the back is the 2.0 megapixel camera lens. The display is a capacitive touch screen, that means it's very quick and responsive to our finger taps. It's very accurate as well. The Pantech Ease has two different interface modes. There's the easy mode as well as the advanced mode. The easy mode is pretty self-explanatory, that means it's a very clean and simple interface. At the bottom of the whole figure there are only two options, the dialer as well as the main menu. The main menu itself is very simple, very streamlined, and a very list-style interface. According to Pantech, the easy mode is designed more for senior citizens or those who are new to cell phones. In easy mode you get applications like the pedometer as well as a pill reminder. Also helpful for senior citizens is that this phone can be enlarged to a very large size. In advanced mode, however, you get all of the phone's functions. For example, in advanced mode you get up to three customizable home screens, you get four different shortcuts at the bottom of the display. You also get a more full-featured menu interface. The Pantech Ease also has a readout mode as well as a voice mode. Voice mode lets you dictate text messages, while the readout mode reads the text message back to you. >> Jamie, today 3:58 p.m., hi, how are you? >> Other features of the phone include the usual text messaging features. You also get 2 megapixel camera and camcorder. There's also a GPS of AT&T navigator. You also get stereo Bluetooth as well as a HTML web browser. Of course, there's also access to AT&T's broadband services like mobile video and mobile music. Slide up on the phone and you'll reveal a full QWERTY keyboard. As you can see here, the keyboard's very nice and spacious, and the keys are raised above the surface, so it's very easy to text and dial. The Pantech Ease is available for around $70 with a new 2-year service agreement from AT&T. I am Nicole Lee, this has been a first look at the Pantech Ease.
