Make touch-screen-friendly gloves
I'm Sharon Vaknin for CNET and if you've ever tried using your phone with gloves on, you know it's impossible and there's a reason for that.
The screen on your phone is a capacitive touchscreen which means that it responds to the static electricity in your fingers.
So if you have gloves on, the fabric blocks that signal.
Now, there are some obvious and ridiculous solutions like cutting off the tips of your gloves or even just taking your gloves off when you need to answer a phone call.
That means your poor fingers got exposed to the cold.
Today I'll show you a better solution and all you need is a pair of gloves, a hand sewing needle and a conductive thread.
You can pick this up online.
Just search for conductive thread.
I got this 5 yard sample for 5 bucks.
This thread has silver woven into it.
So if we sew it into the fingertips, the static electricity from your fingers travels through the thread and onto the touchscreen.
To get started decide which fingers you want to be touchscreen compatible.
I'm gonna do my pointer and thumb since I use those the most.
Now thread your needle and make a few stitches at the tip of those fingers on the glove.
If you want, you can wear a thimble and put your finger into the glove to make it easier.
Feel free to get creative with your stitch with something like a star design.
When you're done put your glove on and touch your screen to see if it works.
You should be able to do all the things you could normally do if you were using your bare fingers without exposing them to the elements.
There's enough thread here for a few gloves so make some extras or even give some to your friend.
Feel free to send me photos of your handy work on my Facebook page or on Twitter.
For CNET.com I'm Sharon Vaknin and enjoy your new phone friendly gloves.
