It's real: Vivo phone scans fingerprints under the screenSorry, Apple. Qualcomm and Vivo are the first to show off under-screen fingerprint tech.
The first phone to put a fingerprint sensor under the screen is not an iPhone. Chinese manufacturer Vevo beat Apple to the punch and showcase the technology on a prototype phone this week at a mobile show in Shanghai. This promotional video shows it in action as a concept. Instead of using a physical button for a sensor, the fingerprint scanner is under the display and it's based on Qualcomm technology. Qualcomm says this type of scanner can work through thick glass, metal, even under water. It also uses ultrasonic sensors to detect a person's heartbeat and blood flow for an extra layer of security authentication. Qualcomm says phones could ship with this technology by the summer of next year. Phone manufacturers are shifting toward an all-screen front design. So we could be saying goodbye to buttons and hello to screen scanners. There are numerous reports that Apple's next iPhone is gonna have an under the screen fingerprint sensor. The technology is out there, but we'll have to see if any other phones will showcase the tech before Apple. I'm Bridget Carey. You can find more details on cnet.com.
