CNET First Look
HP LaserJet Pro P1606dnFast, cheap, and compact, the HP LaserJet Pro P1606dn offers a winning combination of value and performance for home offices or small businesses in need of a monochrome laser printer.
-If you're shopping for a printer to setup a home office or a small business, HP may offer a winning combination for you. I'm Justin Yu for CNET.com and this is your first look at the HP LaserJet PRO P1606DN laser printer. It's a monochrome laser which means it only prints blank ink, so you may wanna look into a color laser or even an inkjet printer if you wanna output a lot of graphic, color pages. This printer is also first and foremost a space saver. It's only 15 inches wide and 11 inches deep, so it's easy to setup on your desk. HP also makes it really easy to setup with Smart Install. That's an HP-specific feature that embeds the driver in the machine instead of on an external disc. So, all you have to do is plug it in, connect to your PC, power it on, and Smart Install will do the rest. In terms of controls, this HP is setup for business specifically, so you don't really get many buttons to play around with on the front, nor is there an LCD status display. You do, however, get a Go button to print a configuration page or cancel a job, and there's also 3 small LEDs to tell you if the printer is ready or if there's a problem that needs your attention. Reporting on the speed and quality tests, the HP posted consistent scores across all 3 monochrome speed tests. Competitively, the only printer that bested its speed is OKI printer that costs almost double the price. We're equally impressed with the print quality test as well, and while grayscale gradients aren't quite as smooth as we'd like, it's still acceptable to use for professional documents. Now, you can read all the details and our full review on CNET.com, but that's gonna do it for me. I'm Justin Yu. You just took a first look at the HP LaserJet P1606DN. Thanks for watching.
