CNET to the Rescue Ep. 46: We are done with PCs (and Macs)Brian Cooley joins us today for an epic rant about re-installing Windows yet again. Also, great topics from listeners, including updating Android phones, using an iMac as a TV, and using solar power on laptops.
I don't want to welcome to CNET addressed news dynamic shielding her San Francisco this is our weekly show we try to solve your -- I Lama -- the flood of using modern technology. I am joined today by the the the -- were passable irrepressible Brian Cooley. Who did get the memo on. Yes we are all blue today they apparently used my shirt as a -- for these new -- you actually via a -- to push one button and it is key when it could float ideas and little floating in the exactly -- would be art Brian thanks for joining us today the pleasures almost we it will be just wait. -- -- -- We we take your questions on this show -- -- get the Shirley if you have a tech question for us if you would like to see how we can mangle the tech advice that you ask this force tended to. Rescue -- cnet.com. And we will do our best to get you straightened out now we are going to start the day. With a -- and growing our weight or I'm gonna its threat Brian and and I no longer want advertising dollars from any anything that's traditional transit institute. We're about to cut CBS I revenue by 44% who worked that they were killing windows and then I'll pick on the Mac I'm so double windows I -- done you cannot be done would -- used no Brian Cooley cannot be done with windows that's. True but I'm on about a two year trajectory to get there I am I'm facing what the umpteenth. System rebuild in my life. That by this week and I'll sit there and my loan of sorts for an hour. On a format of the giant. Reinstall of the Adamo asked getting my apps funny all the authorization keys form logging into how tech support a couple sites and what's Mikey -- lost it then getting -- data. Invariably losing part of it or duplicating other parts of it. It's a system rebuild weekend folks in the fiftieth I've done and -- through after this one and I'm trying to get this -- -- systems totally hobble I can't print from any browser except IE I can't install anything I can't roll backs -- -- windows update. Nor can I get the thing to stay on wired ethernet for more than four hours at a stretch what did you do to your computer no idea I don't care anymore that's the data -- -- all right so understands this care anymore my mother's computer the same thing she's a living with the for two years. Right I'm not gonna live with that. Now so but you can't like. Not do it that's too high court's and you except I need Adobe -- -- -- -- Sony's sound forge and I need Microsoft PowerPoint those military things they can't replicate on line. Demise that respect Mets that's those would literally -- only three things I don't think it. How often do -- edit video not often you know how often do I edit audio will frequently. And and then how often or can I get you get around using Google presentation is that a PowerPoint now really could it sucks -- you gonna do it. I'm gonna keep the machine running as little as I have -- but I'm making a concerted -- To get away from the OS based self administered a waste of -- time that they've somehow. Can't you mean everyone else in the spending great swaths of human efficiency and productivity on the last. 21 years. Yeah well it's funny because when the PC was. The PC revolution started we were also excited because it meant we could administer own machines and we wouldn't have annual IP people's telling us what we could and couldn't do and wait for them etc. etc. And that was a good thing we -- was that they wanna context -- But I don't want the administration part anymore I just want the personalization so you always want it are we had to take the administration widget. To get personal station now we don't have to balance use this -- your -- out I have to say this I have a 2008. First generation aluminum MacBook -- I believe it's 2008. It is taking. Fifteen minutes to -- them. Definitely I have no idea what's wrong I have run via the repair permissions I have run the disk repair thing I've done everything to rebuild the thing which. I don't wanna do because. Like you ivory -- fifty windows machines I've only done it once on a MacBook it'll -- me all day figuring out Abd -- my pleasure and does not edit -- doesn't come doesn't -- It's not in my mind. Muscle memory as much as -- when you don't wanna -- it's it's four to six hours in a good case really. Once you've finished all the little tweaks in the big stuff -- capital not just a day it's not just install it putting VoS the other is getting all your apps back in finding keys etc. you now -- about -- -- -- -- -- -- with cloud apps. I was thinking about this I really that that the amount of installed software -- use them -- my PC or my Mac -- that isn't just. Doesn't automatically just update from the way it is really -- There's very little I don't use I hardly ever use word anymore at all on that used to be my go to app moving away from outlook yeah. The apps that they do use like Evernote. Drink automatically downloads its data every time I installed on new machine right calling is a password. -- cloud stuff you write that way. It's just there's a few apps that all of us are hanging on to everyone listening right now saying you have it is one or two or maybe three apps I cannot do on the cloud -- -- too resource hungry typically audio video applications right. Or they are just unique PowerPoint is head and shoulders above any -- presentation -- I happen to use all the time are you serious oh I love it oh absolutely. PowerPoint Aaliyah. And have somebody comes -- to give me demo on -- -- like faults that doesn't know how do you instantly oh yeah and it's a -- we -- looking at the -- I can do stuff in PowerPoint that'll make you make your head spin and a good -- And -- without green foam coming out. But Tom this is my dilemma three apps -- get -- those three apps via a proprietary -- to be done with the self administered. Below eighty. What's the real key here -- -- administered at the fact that it is software meant. It's really designed to be administered but it's allowed to be self administered windows is not Republican -- and this -- -- it that way that's of the here's the thing I. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- You know the rule. The same thing is true with I amended -- is often different directions same thing is true with cars. People drive because of the impression and some cases the illusion of being control their own destiny and instead of taking public transit or carpooling people just want to own the means of their own destiny and that same thing with PCs and automobiles and I mean I drive more places than I should because I don't want who have to worry about us. To sit next to freaks I don't wanna signatures impede him those are part of my reasons for not going to -- -- -- -- Illinois though that's what it that's when -- plastic -- with the whole bottom you went aren't able to run it vandalism done -- Elaine you're worried about the holes are plugged up that's my only concern. A sort of revealed little a little reaper with me to make sure things are -- so I I have to tell you this I am very excited about the Chrome book. Now people are comparing price wise to notebooks and netbooks and saying oh but it does so much less in the cost too much -- -- -- I will pay a premium for Chrome what's your what's your reasoning because I have the CR 48 which is the prototype -- books they handed out years ago. It's slow. It's salute that the track pad sites and in -- fixing all the stuff. But the concept is I can give this computer to my four year old. Locking me and he cannot destroy anything else right it is a locked -- machine that has full access the web I mean -- -- because it lacks the millennia. But all the important stuff all the -- -- -- do everything you need to do on the everything he needs to do most people can do everything they need to do on this machine and it's only gonna get better and the OS is basically -- -- -- that right when -- booted up it boots up its elaborate Chrome OS below. Yet the browser from going where. And it up it can update itself via -- can update yet but it's I assume more robust than it was sitting on a hard drive -- -- the things you can comment yet so far. Into you know until people get their hands on -- -- hacking away -- it. And adding extensions to it you'll differently -- -- -- bus yeah but that's that's the key element to the due to viewers is you have 500 dollars. You get an iPad -- -- -- netbook -- rugged eager crumble it's a deceptively tricky question. Now with only 500 bucks in your computer but yeah I've heard I wonder buys extra. Get a tablet. Right and iPad exactly doing it yet extras on much of the questions he is a teacher only device or what next device -- you get a negative personal cases asking that the question -- -- -- -- only has one device anymore. Anyway -- -- -- take some questions. Thank middle divergence -- -- -- windows you're running windows right now you want to two years on windows but I promise you think Steve Ballmer sits -- fixes -- Windows he knows -- people who do that you -- ever spend time fixing his obesity. He knows what a -- it is coming thick and -- hold ever sit there and the re installs a -- -- prices I'll bet you a hundred dollar -- we saw this I will bet few hundred dollars Bill Gates installed on windows machines back in the day now until the day he left -- -- only just like Steve Jobs -- -- out of box experience. You think I'm gonna yell -- people think this sucks. It always did its reputation and -- -- -- and -- -- -- we have to answer. Questions from people but now we've had with paranoia and much all right -- -- -- -- car I'm sorry if I print mangling your name here. I want to help I can upgrade the OS in an Android device to be a mobile phone PC or tablet well it's a -- devices that mobile or tablet. Now this is a very important question because you really should update your Android devices because there is a data leakage problem which we have covered the Android devices are. -- can be. Via Wi-Fi. Attack to an extent and -- data can be siphoned off so you want to upgrade your OS to the one that is secure however. Three dot for right. According to Donald bell it is pretty much when it comes up -- this is just like windows. When it comes to updating -- it's pretty much everyone for themselves for the phones you're completely at the mercy of the carrier to do and over the air update. Com you could. May be rue your device to get an update go to the rom based -- two to three or four. So you're kind of closed when it comes to the carriers gotten here managing yes yeah now that the the solution right now is to disable auto sync for apps that don't use HTTP -- and I don't know how to planet which apps actually do you do not use HT TPF secure -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- it -- -- on three G like a tablet via. They seem to be safe right now. Okay. Tablets running OS is again accord about prior to doctor -- You can you can annoy the manufacturer try to get them to push out an over the air update. But it's no way to force -- manually. -- the the Galaxy Tab to be in a Nook Color in the Dell streak five that seven are most high profile tablets. That have the galaxy -- getting an update later this month the streets are running conducted -- two. Haven't heard any word on an update and the Nook Color just receive the two that you update. Of the past that -- -- got three seems unlikely. Got to -- -- not even been an even close to being out of the two dot three dot three and prior profile that is vulnerable. Doesn't -- get to dot war is when you have the vulnerability -- -- yet. So these guys are a long way obviously one big gulp -- -- says it may be awhile before the streaks and the Nook Color. Jump to two gonna import -- Know what it says it already -- -- which -- reputable Friday were discussing various you know what you say Apple one thing we talked about the some -- landing yesterday as you -- turn off the Wi-Fi control that says logon to any open -- what you consult god do that on any machine right and Android. Yeah your laptop. The iPhone and have any of these devices specially tablets -- default Internet. But that's the first in the -- -- -- level when you go to a coffee shop or an airport with this free public Wi-Fi and think I'll just like old W that the -- public Wi-Fi at shows up everywhere. -- Are these people but who's doing it potentially you've been a lot of dead to not amateur is someone -- -- -- box can live on for the right here I think it's actually -- launched -- still running. My windows machine for the damn thing doesn't work. -- -- -- -- -- -- I have a TV and my family room. Which is not primary media space I'm trying to keep the equipment as minimal as possible links clean install. And I he wants to avoid adding a receiver is a possible to have an audio solution with speakers connected using only a TV and cable box. -- not looking to use any rear speakers but -- be interested in surround sound with possibly a sound bar. My goal is just get decent sound quality from that -- be my other interest keeping my speakers the smallest possible so perhaps -- -- -- recommendation for speakers. The -- -- performed the boy -- -- we almost have too many recommendations Donald again -- the rescue and says and you assuming you can run audio out from the TV or cable box. Then. You have these home theater in a box sound bar solutions are -- are a whole list here. They lava cone off to recommend as the -- box any product from the box which uses that he -- using inputs -- -- The best bang for the buck he says the Sony HTC he won fifty which has HDMI switching. And of them are higher and you can get Carmen Carmen SP sixteen. The lot of good ones and if you -- go even further business there's a Samsung moment among others and of Blu-ray player built in -- it really is a home theater box in a bar. With -- -- so imagine this this long wide thing that runs under your TV if you don't want to sound bar has -- -- sub -- we always need a sub. If you really wanna get some decent -- none of these really put out. I would call satisfying -- -- apartment shaking your house down but you know. That nice body to -- -- -- all the sound and none of them do that without a sub -- -- a little bit cluttered there but he's gonna happen he's very much in the clean look which would among Mac. But subs are pretty high -- and -- subs are mono and non directly can put it anywhere although he's gonna sound pretty good. Well you have to tune it in phase -- could you keep you you can't get a map updates. I had -- experience without -- but -- when you the wiring quote flipped positive and negative. That's really the -- human but sub subs are non directional locations does matter is giving you some subjectivity some subs work better in the corner some not it's not there yet but -- apparently can't forget the most -- -- out all by far the phone almost all they do it's pretty easy job. Now speaking of which using a TV is as the input video switchers actually -- idea I as you may mean I know. I have this old Moran's pre HDMI AV receiver which is fantastic except that doesn't switch HDMI and and everything -- -- I just had spent 200 bucks just get it repaired and instead of getting a new one I love the sound on -- some movie page so you might make good sounding audio gear folks yeah there may be new -- -- I'm scared to upgrade to like five or six and knowledge and on which is probably pretty good let's have surfaced Madden crap this Iran or -- -- the -- -- -- -- going to be using when I finally do the upgrade to a modern television art display. I'm gonna be doing all my video switching in the TV -- they'll have like. Multiple inputs and outputs yeah and just use the -- -- want to handle at all. Yeah that's a nice nice trend and I stability and televisions if you haven't purchased one lately they have a lot HDMI in and out used to be -- as a -- in my report when you were lucky had to write -- human input. Now the -- -- -- with -- great it's -- the cost down so I'm gonna turn the -- space into an amp. Yeah right and use the TV as the switcher that's wacky but slipped by don't I bet it's gonna -- it's clean -- not totally adore him clean it centralized it should work out filing you know unlikely it just think it like you're gonna have any HDMI authentication issues passing things around had only -- I'm I'm worried about is a lip -- You a good look at magenta -- -- com. I would I would doubt there's a lot of issues that it would they consider -- a modern TV that handles HDMI one point four here you know all the latest. Spec built into that. I know what it should be proud because you peripheral if you shouldn't be -- at all because the emirates is a full analog channel so there'll be no delay there now got -- problem -- -- passed through the actually know this because it -- -- college I will figure and other home media question. Bobby asked recently mentioned how you never go over your Comcast's bandwidth use that so I decided to go online and check mine and noticed that just twelve isn't my site cause -- -- hundred -- -- 112 gigs out of the 250 that I -- I soon in my video streaming like CNET and Revision 3 and those other guys -- you know Hulu and HBO might be to blame. Is their way to know how much bandwidth you're about to consume before you hit play. Such an interest in question for terrestrial for premises I don't think so right there is not and here's the thing I mean if you're gonna play HD video -- say your play. Game thrown sort Everett is and it's an hour long and it's S the year HD. How much videos that you don't know and you don't know because so that it could be 700 megabytes which is you know dvd or CD or whatever for Nia -- or eight. Could be. Fifteen megabytes. You just don't know because of the codecs and the encryption and nothing -- from the that but the codecs and the quality and all that stuff. There is no way to know. I think this is such an interest in question it is such a good idea especially -- their -- with caps. That when -- about to play a long form video it should say how much data is in that stream. You -- you not. And really though what you need -- -- was an issue keeping a little. Although she your head of how many events you've no one's gonna do that over the course of a month what's my total right now you need some kind of an app that will sit where that will monitor this and looking at download.com is they're not something out there. It will keep track. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Now everything when they're gonna download a video like I'd download Big Apple -- from from Apple site they'll tell you how big the video is important here but streaming. It's not usually show I didn't know that Revision 3 did not -- single -- not seen before. There are coupled -- mobile questions and says I need to get a non contract mobile hotspots were cross country car trip with the family. Have been looking at a Virgin Mobile MiFi 2200 -- the T-Mobile forging. Mobile hot spot ZEMFXT. One. We definitely want to go non contract used to the device just advocating use of the device will be for email casual web surfing by laptop a couple of iPod Touch -- -- -- like -- gaming. We're driving from Colorado -- PC and the subtext here is you really want the kids to be occupied and. I was hit bottom line obviously this is a very very business is critical area and important products are -- -- -- you're -- check -- coverage to as you know what you're going him she guys have the route worked out. Orbit to the nth degree so -- checked the coverage maps. There are required by a -- carriers to publish accurate coverage maps now. T-Mobile has there's virgin has there's noticed that -- disparate in terms of -- virgin is owned by sprint it's a submarine and spray it on Sprint's network since I think 2009. So you're going to have the same coverage as you have on sprint and go to the Virgin Mobile -- -- once you figure -- that both have your route covered. -- the question is what the device cost and with the data cost. The T-Mobile device is cheaper 74. Dollars. Vs -- 125. For the virgin Arctic. And I don't know what is its price disparity because that's a -- if you just -- -- to say how much for the version. Is yet. I go ahead I'm not going there I am not going there. Hands up look science. T-Mobile forgy the virgin device is only going to be three -- they don't let it operate on the forgy layer -- sprint around me I didn't know that those resurgent with this morning. It's only three G and burdensome -- people's coming out ahead T-Mobile -- also has a very I think has significantly more attractive data plan. They both keep your unlimited for fifty bucks and you're gonna want that in this case because you can't start with a lower plan and kind of nudge -- over the next few months as you want to your data usage -- -- doing this for one month can can exit in this. These -- contract free these plans. So the question that that's the only part I didn't check Newton. In a cardinal -- doom of the these things -- -- -- you. If you didn't get the subsidized price for the device which is the question what's -- on the -- in -- at the by the device. And -- -- getting used -- off of the day or something and then just pay per month service is that the move towards a lot of the the mobile. The the mobile data plans is contract free. Like the country it's a one month when you start to use that and then if you don't use it again they don't charge it. Check these guys are real quick urgency now we -- going -- and it devices mobile hot -- looking at T-Mobile for example they came out better overall. When you go to buy the device. It shows it -- 7999. And you can check right out there is no place where it says but -- edited choose from a variety of -- no commitment data plan perfect. We love -- him a beta program known at -- monthly -- showing interest in no Clinton monthly is saying they've got some new equipment I don't see them. These are all apparently. -- Commitment built on -- -- ten gigabytes for 89. 89 dollars a month 85 dollars a month is I think the commitment free ooh it's pricey -- only one month and geek insanity. With kids and her the end -- gas. I'm I'm I'm I'm not sure to Mozilla to do this on a on the on and on committed basis that's the -- I don't know that's the way to go in terms of the price for the data. The price for the device the question is do they let you do it without commitment I will check that out and put some notes in the in the blog post here it and and get back to programs that regard and -- general says virgin is non contract -- all all in the spokesman chat rooms it's -- the virgin is gonna win out there hence the higher price for the device and now. And by the way and limited they all say is. Unlimited unlimited to my two and a half left your email on virgin and then you get capped -- 256 KB PS for the remainder of contract the -- can keep using more data but it's handicapped and and you get five gigabytes unlimited plan. On T-Mobile but again once you -- the five -- -- on your bandwidth are they still calling five -- and limited they can't believe this -- now -- it is automatic Egypt and keep going what did you want but ultimately these things -- habits at that point I see so you get cap on your data rate not your data transfer it's like. Limp home mode and -- as old Cadillac exactly it -- get itself home but you're not gonna like that last night oils yet. Are so virgin is gonna be your contract free choice and I don't like that and fortunately -- is. Not forgy although that's been on your main concern that the applications you had anyway FaceBook like gaming community forgy for the tickets from screaming that -- other online -- version of. Ron is a military combat correspondent who wrote to us and -- I've been. All over the world including Afghanistan and Iraq shooting stories about our military men and women. Is a twenty year military combat -- I'm glad you've made it this far. Lately have been making trips to Africa -- -- find myself without electricity for long stretches. While I normally have enough batteries -- my video camera by Panasonic tough book is reluctant to operate for long without steady diet power. It's entering mechanic -- -- with when my last trip I was wondering if there any solar power options for powering or recharging and laptop. -- -- -- longer periods of time video editing and sending stories via the Internet back to civilization but without several mile long extension -- -- and implement. But interest in question union now there are solar solutions for which we'll get -- -- -- second but. They're expensive so my actual recommendation here. And I don't know your situation. Is a car charger. Is to use the twelve full. And that's universal. Palate that's murder -- that is the global universal power standard ia is twelve volt DC and you can get a relatively inexpensive. Battery charger for your top book from. Amazon anywhere you can you can. Get those you could be cheaper just to buy an -- and unplugging your existing wall outlet charger into that there's those can be had for like 34 dollars and you can plug anything into it that way but if you want to travel -- you can actually get a -- Charger -- with direct and pressure adaptor they have they have on for the so we epithet over the small amount of additional -- and the the -- -- heavyweight cheaper than a Panasonic tough book twelve volt charger nothing out of a rare part yeah -- -- about it at eighty bucks somewhere in memory and what. Now and murder -- thirty or forty on it. And those prices by the way -- -- goons and compared to going solar. Now if you look at I was looking at -- 300 a comparison 2008 of various portable solar laptop chargers. Many of the products mentioned in this story here out of date but that manufacturers are still there. The one that I was most interest that in -- -- -- comical brunt and they have a line of products called solaris. They range. And -- -- fabric based their solar cells on fabric and they fold up and just. Depending on how much -- you how many of those that you want they range from a 166 dollars at the low end up to thirteen. Hundred but. The thirteen hundred dollar product will put at 62 watts. In full sun impressive yet that's enough to power to charge any laptop as fast as they see -- even -- you know thinkpad adapters like 91. And that's that's that's very impressive -- when he's traveling in sunny areas for what we jail now rob Red Hat is is jumping in here with the question that I had here is fees on military vehicles. You're gonna want the -- -- because military vehicles don't use global. Humvees -- twenty -- -- -- -- and nine others I know there are some vehicles out there I believe there -- 40 -- but I think those might -- marine. So anyway hate I was troubled -- and directed BC won't work and anything. Now here's an interesting side note here the tough books are just tough on the outside -- argument when he fourfold of murder for forty bucks if it looks like com. The company -- take systems which is in this business that has tested. Using solar chargers directly into a tough book. And apparently the charging circuitry in some of these Panasonic's via is actually Harden that can take the wild voltage fluctuations that you get mobile -- -- a -- -- -- now some. Laptops might not like that so much and you could possibly possibly risk damaging. A laptop charging circuit if you put in. -- while the brownouts or -- yes that's what really -- and as low voltage more than -- Interest anyway so. Ron stay safe and and good luck with your -- books out there. A couple other questions here -- -- at a time for a few more result on. And -- when everybody -- Hungary. -- question I recently switched from Google crew to Google Chrome from Firefox and the transition went smoothly however. Chrome was built in synchronization lacks a feature to sync my open tabs across multiple computers. Can I do that yes you can't. There are many. Several. Have sync plug ins for Chrome I would start with X marks. Recently acquired by last paths which as you remember last week -- still -- recommend. And -- what comes in from Richard Foley's is of a MacBook and ticket training class which only works on -- training. On I. That's a modern pieces over. Can easily install -- So first thing is obviously could windows it up via but -- have to buy windows buy windows movement boot camp is part of the Mac OS on a paper that. And you can do lipped when you bumping up you old on the option key it'll save you -- -- Mac or windows on this session you do it. The other way is do you have access to it and windows you can get I think prison was a hundred bucks. A Windows 7 disc home premium builder edition. That will be -- -- hundred -- -- to get XP and because -- -- I. And yeah I wonder why he what you get I. That's a narrated in question how you'd download an old version of -- It would right let's work -- easily via browser in the universe he may need to get XP. -- -- that cost more. That's a rare. Let's go see what it is gonna cost the senators think about it it easily do this that would the other three get to yes. Do you have another machine you can access that workers somewhere. It's running windows. And it -- to define IE seven. Right but can you do -- -- -- -- UV and seen -- -- use some other kind of remote technology. Right I would recommend log me in for ease of set up LogMeIn free or LogMeIn free which works on both Macs and PCs that's right and as a fantastic remote control solution yup -- NC is. Unbelievably flexible but -- -- easier. -- means easier as more -- thing. You can get an and XP fully installed this first 58 bucks on Amazon's that's one way to go if you do want to go dual boot and you're gonna use windows more in the future. Good luck com. Also jamaat. I was just gonna say that I got my thinkpad a mile territorial thinkpad is that still running XP and I just -- -- hop -- and of win seven. Enough. One for the desktop one for the MBA and I'm sick of -- Let's see a little. Let us take this last one where we get into couple comments Chris -- -- Levy from Madison Wisconsin my friend just bought herself. A brand new thirty inch iMac and those -- -- computers they -- you will about computers. Those -- -- computer view and doesn't have enough for a TV. Suitable and 23 aunts and maybe television that has me talk as if they can be seamless displays of the sirens are ridiculous they're beautiful yet but anyway this is not a computer to television with a computer attached to it's not just the tell us like this HB extravaganza -- to -- insanely great you'd -- And what she says whenever she gets more money she would like to use a PS3 PS2 and Wii to play her games through her shiny new Mac. I saw there are limited with this and they -- seem expensive I would really love to help -- -- because she gave -- the iMac G four when there's a thirty inch -- the twenty -- -- -- -- -- Okay yeah there's thirtieth cinema display for -- Mac Pro right but that's at that. And that's the most ridiculous -- laid out their huge yet are -- -- got in uncut expands rights. I love it. -- and rightfully so what do you do if you want to run. The video game output through an IMAP. Not a display but a full on computer now you -- call. -- Tony -- is a thirty inch display right. This the Apple hasn't reduced the functionality of using the display using the display portion of the computer as just pure display. Unless you have it completely modern MacBook. You can or you can piped through them like it anyway so -- says you wanna analog video capture card like oh god knows. And it's a card he. Probably the the USB -- -- USB dongle you can plug a video signal into and then display that on your on your. On -- I'm a cancer that's one way to go and that's it's nice and compacts. Inexpensive. And turn it and there are has called the IITV. Hybrid -- it's a TV tuner. For HD and analogue and -- video and all the way to minutes a tuner I'm not sure this thing has I'm sure they have and that does video and yes some truly do but this may not be it. That's the one -- through -- dollars and as a whole one this is -- one that has the input for. -- did and as this video and composite okay with a breakout cable the F with the W cheapest -- ago. The other ideas I've Goddard in the same thing the cost more so among varies so that's what you would do then the expensive ones. Yemen since this is an older one I have its firewire what's the big difference I mean but the thing is these are all standard depth. They're viewed at HD TH DTV tuning but they don't do HD video in.
