[laughter] >> I want to know, I was looking for a good messaging phone on Verizon, and I was wondering do you guys prefer touch screens or like, physical keyboards. >> Yeah well. >> Interesting question. >> Yeah, I mean, you know when it comes to messaging, I think that the, if you really do a lot of that, if you're sending a lot of emails and you're sending a lot of texts, I kind of like the physical keyboard. And I've done both; I've definitely done the touchscreen and the, so the benefit to me of the touchscreen is that you get a little more autocorrect, which is nice. You know, it'll autocorrect your h-e-l-l to he'll, which is nice. You don't necessarily get that with a physical keyboard, but I think you can get a lot more speed on the physical keyboard than you can -- >> It only took me three years to feel entirely comfortable with the touchscreen, so it all depends on whether you're patient or not. [laughter] So yeah, I think the physical keyboard definitely outranks the touchscreen. >> Yeah, I think if you're really doing a lot of messaging, and then, and so I'm actually going to recommend a phone that has the best of both worlds, the LG enV Touch from Verizon Wireless, which is always, it's been on our, it's been one of the most popular phones across the United -- it's been on our top ten most popular cell phones of 2009. I actually just used one this weekend. I spent the weekend with it because I, I killed my 'Droid, so it was my emergency replacement for the weekend. >> So that was your replacement for a while? Okay. >> Yeah, so I borrowed the LG enV Touch, I've played with it, you know, and it's a nice form factor because you do have the touchscreen -- >> Yeah. >> -- if you just want to make a call or just check something really quickly. And then you can flip it open and start typing. And I thought it was really useful, and what is it, about 50 bucks right now, I think. >> Do you have a recommendation to stay without a data contract, maybe? >> Ahhhh. >> Right, right. >> Ohhh, without a data contract. Good question. >> Yeah, because the LG enV Touch is going to get much more expensive if you try to get it unlocked, right? >> Right. >> How much is the Eris without a data contract? Although it doesn't have a physical keyboard. >> Right. >> It's 100 bucks with the contract. It might not be any more cheaper. Finding a hundred dollar phone without a contract's going to be tough. >> Are you saying you want one without a contract or you want one without a data plan? >> No, I'm fine with getting a Verizon two-year contract. >> Oh okay, without the data plan. >> You want one that doesn't have to come with a data plan. >> Yeah. >> Oh, so then you want something that's not, well I mean, do you have to get a data plan with something like the enV Touch which is not really a smart phone? >> Yeah, it says it requires a data plan even if it's like a small one. Yeah, I was thinking either like the enV3 or the Intensity. I was just curious which one you guys thought was the better phone for messaging. >> Hmm. I will say, okay, well I'll say two things: one, Kent German is going to be on next Wednesday, so he will have some answers for that. But also the chat room is telling me that the LG enV Touch doesn't require data, and I think sometimes if it is just considered a messaging and not a smart phone, and it may be one of those, it may be that classic customer service dilemma where you basically have to keep calling until you get the person that gives you the answer that you want. >> Yeah. >> So it might be worth calling them back and saying, "Do I really have to have this? Are you sure?" >> And we gave the Intensity 7.3 out of 10. That's three and a half stars, and we gave the enV3 4 stars or, let's see, an 8.3, so we slightly preferred, preferred the enV3. >> And another phone you might want to look at is the Samsung Rogue, the SCHU960. That is an Editor's Choice and it is just a messaging phone for Verizon, and you may -- Oh no, no, no, no. Sorry. That one is one of the few according to our review that does require a data plan. But they say it's one of the few, so I actually think you might have gotten wrong information about the enV Touch. >> Yeah, and especially when you're talking to stores versus calling, sometimes you just have to ask a different person or call the support line. You get a different answer ?- >> Yeah. >> -- with those sorts of things. >> Right. Yeah. I'm thinking just kind of go up the chain until you get the right answer. >> Yeah, demand it. >> Demand it. >> Hey, I will spread lies about -- no, don't do that. [laughter] Alright, thanks Paul. What can we do for you? >> Hey, how you guys doing? >> Hey, we're doing alright. >> I have a quick question. I'm looking at a Pioneer AV receiver. I'm looking actually at the VSX1019H, AHK, which is a CNET Editor's Choice. Sounds like a really great receiver. >> Mm-hmm. >> Only thing is, I can't find it anywhere locally, and I'm wondering, you know, should I trust Amazon shipping something like that sensitive? [laughter] >> Well, Amazon is listening right now. >> Let's bring Craig on. >> Yeah, let's ask Craig Berman. We're going to be talking to him a little later about deals and stuff, but Craig, if you don't mind, can you give him some reassurance about shipping policies and insurance and that sort of thing when you order something like consumer electronics through the mail? >> So, we've gotten really good and we've spent a lot of time and a lot of energy to make sure that when customers are buying high-end TVs, fragile things like DVD players, that we take good care and we work with our carriers to make sure that the products are delivered on the doorstep and taken into the home in some cases, in the, you know, perfect order just like you got it yourself. And you know, it's something we pride ourselves on, we work really hard on, and a lot of these things, a lot of big, expensive you know, TVs, they get delivered anyway. It's not something, a lot of times it's not something that the customers can just throw into the back of their car, regardless of what they have. So I think customers can shop confidently and feel confident that we'll get them their products in, on their doorstop in great condition. >> In the odd case that something did happen, because you know what, mistakes just happen and it's just human nature. What's the return policy or the resolution with Amazon? >> So you know, we back the products. If it's, if something was damaged in shipment we'll take it back and get you another one -- >> Simple as that. >> -- and we'll try to do it as fast as possible. >> Excellent. >> And if you're buying from a third-party seller, those purchases are under our A-to-Z guarantee, and we can help work with, between the customer and the seller to come to some resolution there as well. Again, we want this to be as easy and friction-free and reliable as possible for customers. So again, folks should feel very confident that they're covered when making high-end purchases and high-end consumer electronics purchases. >> Great, so what do you think, Zach? Do you feel reassured? >> Yeah, that was actually a pretty good segue. That was pretty funny. [laughter] >> I know, and we did not plan that. You did not. Craig is like, yeah, that was not funny. >> Should I wait until CES? >> Now that's always a question to see what's going to be announced at CES versus what you should order now. You know I mean, there are going to be a lot of things announced at CES. The big question is, is there going to be something announced that you have to have right now. And no matter what's announced, even if it comes out right now, you know, it's going to be full price. So there's always, you know if you can get a good savings right now on the receiver that you want, I don't know. I have this friend Ashley, and he has a rule, Ashley's rule of electronics: if you don't have it, you can't use it. So, you know. >> That's true. >> Very true. >> Keep that in mind. >> The only thing I would worry about is if there were, we were on the brink of some big, new feature, like for instance if 3D was really important to you and you were thinking about buying a Blu-ray player and you were worried that it wouldn't be backwards-compatible with 3D Blu-ray, then you might want to hold off and see what the details are. I don't know of anything in this category that I see on the horizon that's going to change the game a lot for you, so -- >> Let me tell you, it's not going to have wireless HD, you know? >> Yeah, right. >> And whatever is announced is probably one or two quarters away from coming out, you know, and it's just not, I don't think you have to worry so much that you're going to have total heartbreak. >> Awesome. >> And if you do, there's always Craigslist. >> Alright. Can you tell us a little bit about how to find the deals, stuff, and what's really hot right now? >> So the lightning deals are still happening. The best, easiest way to do it is go to the gateway page, the home page and look for the little gold box that says, it says "today's deals." And today's deal right now is the Bourne Trilogy on Blu-ray. List price is one nineteen ninety. Yesterday we had it for seventy-four forty-nine. Today were taking almost another 25 bucks off, so it's forty-nine ninety-nine for the Blu-ray trilogy. That's 58 percent off. That's really good. We got rid of, we really moved through a Viore 26-inch 1080P LCD HDTV today. They just kind of blew right out of -- that was our lightning deal. 100 percent of them are cranked and that's gone. That was a great deal. >> Wow, so now you can also, this is, I've actually been following the lightning deals on Twitter at Twitter.com slash lightning deals. That's been a great way for me to want to spend a lot of money. [laughter] That is nothing but trouble. >> You know, a lot of people sign up and getting the Twitter feeds and it's you know, it's really fast, you get right on it. And you can take advantage, because sometimes these deals, they go really fast. >> Now what about shipping? I mean, we're getting to that point where people are concerned that their gifts might not show up if they, if they buy them online. What options do people have out there? >> So you know, standard shipping, our free super-saver shipping deadline was yesterday, but if -- we have a lot of customers out there that are members of Amazon Prime, which is our subscription shipping service where customers pay 79 dollars a year and you get automatic free two-day shipping. There's no aggregating orders. There isn't a threshold of 25 dollars. Excuse me. And that, those deadlines are coming up. The last full day to get that two-day is Monday. Our standard shipping deadline is Sunday. So if customers are ordering today, they're ordering tomorrow, if they're ordering Sunday regular standard shipping, we're still going to get it to them before Christmas. And Monday and Tuesday, Tuesday's going to be like a half-day for two-day shipping. And all that information is right on the detail page, right, it will tell you exactly when we can get it to you, whether we can get it to you before Christmas or whether we can't, depending on what time it is on Tuesday. Even on Wednesday, there's going to be some one-day shipping options if you've really procrastinated, waited, or just decided to get a last-minute gift. Well, turns out: a mouse is a pretty good idea. Here is the top rated product, the top-rated product on CNET for 2009. It's a mouse. ^M00:21:09 [ MUSIC ] ^M00:21:16 >> Hi, I'm Rich Brown, senior editor for CNET dot com. Today we're going to take a look at the Editor's Choice-winning Logitech Performance Mouse MX. So this is a high-end mouse. It costs about a hundred bucks and it's designed for people who take their desktop mouse experience very seriously. Now we found this mouse super-comfortable; it has all kinds of cool features, but probably the most interesting part of it is its new sensor technology. Now there's kind of an arms race going on in mice for the past year or so. Before, the highest-end option was a laser sensor, which was a step up from the old optical and even the ball mice before that. Last year, though, Microsoft introduced what's called its Blue Track sensor, which let you mouse all the sudden on things like glossy surfaces, cloth, you can, you can mouse on, like, pants or carpet. So Logitech has answered Blue Track this year with its own Dark Field sensor. Now Dark Field lets you do everything that Blue Track can, but it also goes a step further and lets you mouse on transparent glass. So we have a basic laptop and we have both mice connected to it wirelessly. So first we have this surface that Microsoft actually sent us attached to this Blue Track mouse. So this is two pieces of high-gloss stone here, a piece of marble and what, maybe it's granite. So first we'll show the Microsoft mouse. This is an Explorer mouse that uses the Blue Track sensor. So you can see we have the mouse going on the high-polish granite and the marble, and it works no problem. Try with the Logitech mouse: does the same thing. So we have a pillow here; as you can see the Microsoft mouse works no trouble, and the same with the Logitech mouse. Problem comes in for Microsoft when we hit the glass surface. So we have transparent glass table here. First we'll show off the Logitech mouse this time. Now you can see it's just as smooth as it was on the marble and the pillow; however, with the Microsoft mouse, no such luck. So it's pretty clear that Dark Field is the better technology. And this is also a more expensive mouse than Microsoft's Blue Track products. But that said, there's a whole lot more going on with this mouse than with a Microsoft product. You have Logitech's fast scroll wheel that lets you toggle between sort of a [inaudible] scrolling and free-spinning scrolling that's really fast for going through long documents. You also have all kinds of buttons on the side here, including front, back. You can zoom and then use the scroll button to zoom in and out of documents. There's also a hidden button down here that lets you toggle through different applications. Now you've noticed that so far both these mice are wireless. Logitech actually has a pretty cool feature with that, too, though. So here's the Logitech to USB receiver. Now it's just a tiny little USB plug, and it's so small you don't even have to take it out of your laptop when you want to travel. Logitech has also added its unifying capability to this receiver, which means that you can use this mouse and any other product in Logitech's unifying family, and you won't need to plug in another receiver; you can just use this one. Now this mouse is also rechargeable; there's a mini-USB plug here. It comes with a cable; you just plug it in, and it charges while you work. Now we don't want to say that the Microsoft mouse is a bad product, because it certainly isn't. Blue Track lets you mouse on all kinds of surfaces that you weren't able to previously. But as long as you're willing to pay for it, this Logitech mouse gives you the best design in the industry, all kinds of features, as well as the most advanced sensor around. I have a question about some of the set-top, or net-top boxes -- >> Uh-huh. >> -- for watching the internet on TV. >> Sure, what's your question? >> Okay. >> We're doing this as our next big thing topic at CES, so -- >> I know, so ?- >> -- we're kind of, kind of well versed in it right now. >> Kind of our thing. >> Well, the thing I've got to do, or I want to do for my parents is, they, they do, well, they watch a lot of Korean soap operas, and the only way they can see them online is through this, this site. But I want them to watch it on TV instead of this little five-inch screen. >> Oh, yeah. >> Some of the boxes, I'm just not sure if they'll do that. Last I heard, Tom, there was something called Popcorn. >> Yes. >> That might do something like that? >> The, the ?- >> Those other boxes do it, too. >> So Popcorn Hour is similar to Boxee, in, in that it's a, you know, you, you, you run it on a box. You get the Popcorn Hour box and the software all at once, and it's able to take in a bunch of video formats over Ethernet and put them on the TV. The Boxee box will also be able to do that. >> Mm-hmm. >> So they're, they're very similar. In fact at this point, I'm probably not as hot on the Popcorn Hour as I used to be, because Boxee's coming out with the box, and that's going to be able to do a lot more than the Popcorn Hour did with a better interface. Now if you're really into openness, open source, open content, being able to support as many formats as possible, then the Popcorn Hour would be the one, but I think, you know, Boxee, or hacking Apple TV to put a Boxee, if you can find a cheap one ?- >> Yeah. >> Those are your better options. >> Yeah, I mean, it sounds like if you're just trying to get, kind of, shows for your parents to watch, you're probably aren't as concerned about all of, supporting all the different formats. So you want, you want to have the ability to just browse the web as well? >> Well, yeah, because what they're watching are, it's on a web site, basically. >> Ohhhhh, okay. >> Well, what Boxee does is it's able to take video that's embedded in web sites and bring it in as channels, so if the channels that they want to watch are available through the Boxee or have an RSS feed, then yes, Boxee will be able to do that, but Boxee doesn't allow you to just browse the web directly. But I don't think that's necessarily what they need. If they, I mean, what ?- do you, can you tell us what the site is? >> It's in Korean, I don't, I don't know. >> Okay, yeah. You know -- >> Alright. >> I, I think I know the sites you're talking about. There's a lot of sites out there that like stream the international programming around. And, and, I don't know that that one in particular is going to be on Boxee, but I know Boxee does support a lot of those international channels -- >> Right. >> -- through a few different services. >> And one other thing ?- >> So you just need to go to the Boxee site and kind of investigate. >> Yeah, and the Boxee, the Boxee box is not very expensive. And a slightly more expensive but very flexible option is to do something like a Mac Mini, or one of those little Dell Media Center computers that are, that are meant to just hook up to the television so that you [inaudible]. But then you have, and then you have to get a wireless keyboard, and, I mean, it might actually be ?- Boxy may actually be the easiest option. >> If Boxee has the channel, yeah. >> As long as you can access the channel. >> I think you're right; Mac Mini is probably your next after that. >> Right, or ?- >> If you find out Boxee's not going to support that site, then yeah, I think that's your next-cheapest bet. >> Yeah, I think so. And that's just, that's just pretty useful, because then you can do Hulu, I mean, you could ?- you know, then you're using a computer. I just bought a Visio 55-inch backlit LED TV and a Blu-ray player. Both are capable of doing 1080p. I have an older Apple TV which I'm using component-out on, and a satellite receiver, which only has component-out. Both of those are only capable of doing 720p or 1080i. Got friends telling me that 1080i would be the better choice, but for some reason I don't know that the 720p wouldn't be the better solution. And the second part of my question is should I use a -- on my TiVo -- should I use a -- let the TV do the upscaling or should I go ahead and use an upscaler? Thanks, guys. If it's between 1080i and 1080p, then I would say 1080p, then I would say go 1080p, because the prices aren't that, they're pretty close together at this point, and then you're totally future-proof. But 720p is so much cheaper that, I could tell you, I personally just bought a 720p set, because it was that much cheaper. And I thought, "I don't have a bunch of 1080p inputs." I don?t have a PS3 ?- the main thing is I don't have a Blu-ray player or a PS3, so I don't care. >> There's ?- >> It still looks great. >> Yeah, exactly. There's not that much out there yet. There's sports, there's Blu-ray, and -- you know, if that, that stuff's important to you then you might want to make sure you go for 1080.
