Altec Lansing Octiv DuoThe Altec Lansing Octiv Duo is a compact, affordable speaker dock that charges two iPhone or iPods at the same time.
-Hi, I'm David Carnoy, executive editor for CNET.com, and I'm here with the Altec Lansing Octiv Duo M202 iPod, iPhone speaker dock. The key thing to note about this system is that as its name implies, it does have 2 docks. Doesn't deliver huge sound but it does offer relatively good sound for its size. There's enough detail here and there's enough bass for casual listening, and most people would be pretty pleased with it. Now, a whole lot of features on the speaker itself. This guy is designed to used with Altec's free iPhone apps. The app is designed for those people who have a significant other living with them who has music that you may not love. There's a virtual slide that allows to adjust the amount of songs played from one iPhone or iPod versus another. You can put the slider at 50-50 if you want, or you could go 80-20. Unlike the smaller Octiv Mini, the Duo does have some buttons on it. There's a power button. There's also a source button that allows you to switch between either dock, as well as the auxiliary input on the back that allows you to connect another audio device. There's also volume controls on the speaker. There're a couple of nice extras. There is a USB port on the side of the speaker that allows you to charge other devices such as a Kindle or even another cellphone. This also comes with a small remote that adheres magnetically to the back of the device so you can stow it away, and the remote controls your basic iPod or iPhone functions for playing back music. There's a lot of competition in the $100-price range for these types of iPod speaker docks, but there's enough here in the Duo to distinguish itself from a lot of these other systems. It's, again, not a fantastic sounding system. But certainly, for casual listening, it's easily recommendable. I'm David Carnoy, and that's the Altec Lansing Octiv Duo M202.
