Acer Aspire Ethos AS8951G
I'm Dan Ackerman and we are here taking a look at the Acer Aspire Ethos 8951.
That's kind of a big name, but this is kind of a big laptop.
It's a very rare 18-inch laptop.
We usually desktop replacements with 17-inch screens, very occasionally get one with an 18-inch screen that almost makes it like it's own self contained living room especially because you've got a full 1080p screen
and Blu-ray player.
So, if you have let's say small den or dorm room, you don't wanna get a separate TV for it, you can definitely use this as a multimedia system.
Because this is a bit desk to replacement, they always feel free to put in this mini high end component that they can find.
It's big Quad Core Intel Core i7 CPU and probably more CPU than you need for just playing back Blu-rays and other HD Videos, also an NVIDIA 555 GeForce GPU, pretty decent part there.
So, you can do some basic tid bit little gaming on here, maybe not a super, super high end stuff unless you turn down some of the graphics options, but the thing that really makes the system stand out as a multimedia laptop is the ability to and we have not seen this before, take that touchpad, pull this little switch right here and pop it out as a stand alone remote control.
So, you can stand at the other end of the room and use this as a touchpad or you can hit up button on it and get some on pad button controls to light up
for like playback and fast forward and pause and volume up and volume down.
The system works best with a Clear.fi multimedia software built in to the Acer.
It's a common stuff where I have to cross a bunch of different Acer devices.
We wish and work better with things like iTunes or windows media player or even online things like Spotify or the Amazon music cloud.
That's a bit of struggle and that the pad itself a little difficult to use as a touch pad remotely.
It's got an accelerometer, doesn't always tract your movements that accurately and the pad is a little bit of a sticky surface and it's little sluggish to get.
We have to crank up the sensitivity settings in order to make it feel like a regular touchpad.
While that detachable touchpad is really the main selling point of the system, it's very inventive.
We hope we see other stuff like that.
We wish in this particular case it's implemented a little better as a touchpad and also easier to use like other software as designed the built in Acer Clear.fi app.
You really gonna only use that one
if you have a bunch of Acer devices because it shares content between them.
So you did like an Acer laptop, an Acer tablet, maybe an Acer phone and nobody really has a whole home theater echo system all from the same company.
That's it, even besides that, just the big 1080p Blu-ray Quad core, multimedia 18-inch mega desktop replacement at about 1500 to 1600 bucks, you do get a decent deal for it.
So, if you're looking for some to take a place of, let's a TV and a Blu-ray player
in smaller room or den or vacation home, you could certainly do a lot worth than this.
I'm Dan Ackerman, and that is the Acer Aspire Ethos 8951.
