will start after this message from our sponsors.
A VR walk through a living, breathing van Gogh painting (Tomorrow Daily 180)
On today's show, a toothbrush that claims to require zero toothpaste.
You can now virtually go inside your favorite painting.
And Bill Nye and Neil Degrasse Tyson want your money and we're gonna tell you why.
Greetings, citizens of the Internet.
Welcome to Tomorrow Daily, the best geek talk show in the universe I'm Ashley Esqueda.
Joining me, as always, on this lovely Tuesday, Khail Anonymous.
What a day, what a lovely day.
What a lovely day.
I'll calm down.
Some people haven't seen-
- the glory that is Mad Max.
Producer Logan, we're looking at you.
Through the glass, that is covered, that you can't see us.
But some, yeah, it was the weekend, we had us some great times.
Kale celebrated his birthday this last weekend.
It was actually on Mother's Day, but he was kind enough to give that day to his mom to enjoy, and then, actually just celebrated the following- This weekend.
But no, it was good.
It took all the recovery days that I needed.
But I'm back, man, to do whatever it is that we do here.
Right we hit it.
Alright, let's do that.
Alright, I gotta tell you a little bit about light sale.
I don't know if we've talked about Lightsail specifically on the show, but there's no Back it or Hack it this week, cuz we didn't have a show yesterday.
So, we're gonna mention this, like a Kickstarter, but it's also pretty newsworthy.
Bill Nye, who is the CEO of the Planetary Society, which is the biggest, I think, non-Government Space, kind of, exploration entity in the country.
And board member Neil deGrasse Tyson, who we all know from Cosmos, the new Cosmos, they are kicking off this kickstarter.
to help fund LightSail.
So, what LightSail is, it's an idea that was made popular by Carl Sagan.
He was on the tonight show with Johnny Carson, way back in the day, like decades ago.
Here he is.
And he's talking about what exactly is, this is in '76, so this idea's been around for a while.
It's actually been around for longer than this even, it's been around for about a hundred years.
And the concept is that you would have this sort of sail made out of mylar, same suff you see balloons made out of, that sort of silvery material.
And then what they would do is they would pack it in really, really tight and then they would launch it into space and it would expand into this really big sail.
And you would have a cube attached to it, a little tiny satellite.
And what the concept of the light sail is is that the mylar and the CubeSat would be so lightweight and so thin, that it would be able to be propelled by photons moving through space.
That are ejected from the sun, so the sunlight sort of.
It's very miniscule, it's very difficult to move things.
They have to be super lightweight.
To be pushed by these photons in space.
But they think that with this they can actually travel pretty quickly to far away places in the galaxy in a fairly short amount of time, which is kind of neat, the concept behind it.
And they already have This is the cool thing.
They already have $4.25 million of funded out of the $5.45 million they need to be able to launch this thing.
So now, to make up for that last 1.2 million, they've gone to Kickstarter.
They've gone to you, the crowdfunding People who love to crowdfund.
And they are only asking for $200,000.
They [LAUGH], no pun intended, sailed past that.
They're at almost $600,000.
So they're almost half way to what they actually just need to launch this thing.
And it ends in a little more than a month.
It ends June 26th, so there's still time to get in and back this.
Oh there's all kind of different levels you can get like a really cool mission patch for light sale, like put it on a jacket or whatever, stickers, all kinds of stuff.
They're even doing parts of the sale itself so you get like a centimeter of the light sale sale, the Mylar sale, which is pretty neat.
But yeah, that's what they're doing and you can basically go to sale.planetary.org to see how light sale works and what exactly they wanna do with it.
I know Neil Grasse Tyson made a joke in the Kickstarter video about how he wanted it to go by Pluto.
He's like, cuz I feel pretty bad about being part of the group that downgraded it from a planet.
[LAUGH] So he's a-
It's a great, it's a really great video, like, you should go watch it.
I mean I love Bill Bill Nye from childhood.
Bill Nye The Science Guy obviously.
Still really big in helping people understand science.
And then the other [UNKNOWN] is pretty much the coolest astrophysicist that there is.
So yeah, really awesome story.
You can go to again, sail.planetary.org to learn more about what they're doing.
Yeah, that's what they're doing.
I want one fo those.
I think everyone wants a lightsail!
So can I tell you about this VR experience?
OK, so I don't know if you've ever look at a painting and been like, I want to go in there?
All the time.
I have never felt that way, however, I do want to do that now, because someone has created a VR experience of a Van Gogh painting, particularly The Night Cafe.
Now, this was created at an Oculus Mobile VR jam.
So it was created by an animator living in Brooklyn, New York named McKenzie Colley and basically like scanned up all the stuff from the Van Gogh painting.
And had to create not only the two dimensions but also had to create three dimensions for stuff that wasn't shown, other sets of faces, behind doors, objects hidden from view, but created this VR experience because.
Apparently McKenzie was super into that so.
This is rad.
Yeah so it was digitized with 3D software and there's even animated effects like there's smoking.
Yeah, the hazy lights.
I mean it's just a big old experience.
And you can go through.
Oh, that's so cool.
What Van Gogh's world would look like if Van Gogh created a world [UNKNOWN] painted it.
Oh, look at the sky, it's amazing.
It's pretty neat.
It's basically just, you know, something cool to show off to people, or Are having some fun artistic experiences with VR.
And sharing some old stuff.
Another great use of virtual reality, that I wouldn't have necessarily considered, like off the top of my head but totally makes sense, let's go walk into an old painting.
Yeah, it's like What Dreams May Come.
Yeah, oh yeah, yeah it is like that.
So that brings [UNKNOWN]
Which is, TDPaint.
So we want to know from you, Franklin.
This is me painting.
What painting would you want to experience in VR?
Well, there's so many.
I'd love that she did Van Gogh.
Cause obviously it's so visual and it's so, there's a way to them that people really like.
I would have to say, I like any Monet.
They have a sort of impressionist kind of world, and it would be really cool because as you're walking closer to things, they get more and more blurry, cause it's impression.
It think it'd be really rad.
You walk away and you can see everything and then as you get closer to it, it totally desolves.
Yeah, so that would be really cool for me.
Yeah, that would be pretty cool.
That'd be pretty cool.
I would, I'd probably just go into Mona Lisa and have a chat.
Have a chit?
Just to hang out.
It'd be, hey, hey, girl.
Maybe she's got a plate of spaghetti down here or something I can't see.
You don't know, you don't know.
So yeah, just to see kinda what's going on in her world.
I like it.
I like The Mona Lisa, that's a good one.
Me and Mona is what we would call it.
What's she was smiling at?
Maybe you could see what she was smiling at.
She's smiling at me.
Mystery solved, you guys.
She swiped me right on Tinder, so we're good to go.
Me and Mona, that's what we call the experience.
I love your Ryan Gosling.
ing Mona Lisa, hey girl.
[LAUGH] That's my favorite.
More like Joey from Friends.
How you doin'?
Well, she's a Italian she'd probably like that.
So TD paint.
Is it painting or paint.
So there you go, TD Paint, tell us what painting you'd want to be inside of.
I wanna talk to you about this toothbrush because I'm a little weirded out by it.
I don't know.
I'm a big fan of good dental hygiene.
Yeah, me too.
We've been using the same old kind of system for a pretty long time.
You've got a toothbrush.
You've got toothpaste.
The toothpaste, brush teeth.
A little bit of baking soda or whatever in there.
You foam up in the mouth.
You pretend you have rabies.
That's what everybody does, right?
And it's rabies.
Seven years old.
I still do that sometimes.
[LAUGH] But you actually do that [INAUDIBLE].
That's actually probably true.
So there's this Japanese company and they have a product and it's called Misoka.
And it's a toothbrush that they claim requires no toothpaste.
Now here's how it works.
It's not just like a little standard regular old toothpaste that you get off a rack.
They say their toothbrush has super thin nylon bristles that are covered in nano-size mineral ions, so that way you don't need anymore toothpaste.
This nano technology making it It's so that you don't gotta use toothpaste anymore.
You zip your misoka in water and then you brush your teeth.
And they're saying you only need one brushing a day.
You just do it once in the morning.
A good three minutes brush and then you're good.
You don't need to brush at night which is maybe a little disgusting.
No they don't understand how brushing works.
So there is a catch.
You got to swap out the bristles once a month.
In fact, the word misoka translates to English as the last day of the month, so that is a reminder of when to switch them out, like at the last day of the month you've got to switch out the bristles.
Did they say how many yen it was?
So, here's a great thing, you can actually get one on Amazon.
I might have to buy it.
I'm gonna get one.
So fifteen dollars a month.
So as much as your Amazon subscription.
But then, you have to switch out the bristles.
Yea, you have to switch them out.
So, yea, fifteen bucks a month.
It's not worth the risk for me.
Not worth the risk?
I mean, where's the doctor?
Yea, what if your teeth all rot out, like where's the.
Because brushing is like, you brush to get the crap off your teeth.
So that's why you're brushing in the morning, usually in the middle of the day and then usually at end of the day.
Your brushing once just for fun, woo, I did it today no it's like cleaning the gunk off your teeth.
Yeah, you gotta clean everything out.
So, and also.
We've been so trained to feel that fresh breath feeling after eating toothbrush.
So taking that away,
You're eating your toothbrush?
I dunno if people are ready for that.
That might be, that could be true.
I mean if you just brush your teeth with water, it doesn't feel as good as having a minty fresh, or if you have a vanilla flavored, toothpaste.
It's not gonna remove the
Flavor from your mouths.
My other question is that they don't mention needing flossing or all of the other things that dentists recommend that you do as you get older.
They're like okay, so you just brush your teeth when you're a kid and then you add flossing when you're a teenager, then on top of that you gotta add water pick, you gotta keep adding stuff, use a little rubber squishy thing when you get older in your 40s and 50s.
They don't mention any of that additional dental care that you probably should be doing.
This is suspect.
I- go ahead and you try it out.
I'll just be over here.
And you'll let me know if my breath is disgusting.
Yeah, once your teeth start falling out, I'll start telling you.
I'm gonna show up, just have no teeth.
No, but I mean I guess
I'll wait to see some doctors try this out.
And tell us if this is an actual thing.
My parents are dental technicians.
And this doesn't sound like anything-
It sounds a little bit sketchy.
They would be like, hooey.
This is bologna!
Yeah, they don't talk about how many times you're gonna have to visit the dentist because [CROSSTALK] terrible.
Also p.s., at the end of every month is how often you need to visit the dentist to get your teeth cleaned out because the toothbrush doesn't work.
Maybe, I don't know.
Maybe I'll try it.
It's only 15 bucks, maybe I'll test it out.
Maybe I'll switch it out.
For one month I'll switch it out for my normal toothbrush, but I'll just brush my teeth like twice a day, like I normally do.
Life's too short to believe in magical toothbrushes.
Listen, replacing your teeth is expensive, so, for $15 a month I don't think I'd take that risk.
Or you can get one of those things like Immortan Joe.
That's a mad half reference
Sorry, sorry, sorry Logan
All right guys that's our headlines we are going to take a quick break we are going to be right back with new releases of which there are so many this week, really good ones.
But before you go I want you to check out Got this amazing bit of string stop motion art, it's all made with one piece of string.
Welcome back to the show, we've returned.
It's a Tuesday which means it's Caleb's favorite time of the week where we talk about all the fun new things that you can throw all your money at, so it's time for new releases.
On a scale of 1 to 10, how excited are you for The Witcher 3
I haven't gotten my new PC yet, so zero.
But as soon as you do.
When it shows up at my house, ten.
Okay, got it.
But current day Khail, zero.
Zero, hm, good.
A week from now Khail, ten.
But you are loading it up right now.
And my computer, which is very old, I, I built this, I built my rig when Star Wars, [INAUDIBLE] Republic, and [INAUDIBLE] three launched.
So, it's been a while, which means my computer is gonna melt, as soon as I load up the Witcher three.
But Witcher three is out, it's this big, gorgeous, open world, new witcher title, obviously the third in the franchise.
I played this a little bit at E3, all right.
I watched a demo of it last year, and it blew my mind.
Blew my mind, it's a gorgeous game.
The story looks really great, continuing with the hero Gerault, am I pronouncing that correctly, Gerault?
I mean, it looks amazing.
I can't wait to play it looks awesome.
This is gonna be a game where I get into it for about 25 minutes to two hours and then I have to stop because I ruined something for myself, like I just ruined the game somehow.
But I'm sure other people will love it, like Khail will actually finish.
Oh yeah, I started playing the Witcher 2 and then I got an hour and a half in and I was like
I have to stop, because I have too many things in my life right now, and I know that I will never stop playing this game.
It's so dynamic, and there's so many things going on, and you have sex with so many people-
And there's even more now in Witcher 3.
There's even more of that.
Oh yeah, more of that, all of that.
Blow it up by five.
And open role games are, I think, that's your jam.
[INAUDIBLE] you load it up and it's like you, it's, This is your journey, Go have a journey.
Linear is always,
I like that.
Story is fine, but, but.
No, I like that.
I love the like Wheeee!
It kills True journey [INAUDIBLE]
Hey, did you have this experience, Nope?
Well, I did!
So, It's like.
Oh, okay and you can play how you want, I enjoy, Which is always really nice So, Witcher 3 is out today, you can go grab that
Also out today is the Destiny expansion.
The Destiny expansion is House of Wolves.
House of wives.
House of Wolves.
Like those things that raised me.
House of wolves.
This is the new Destination expansion.
They have been live streaming this like crazy on Twitch.
I've seen this all over Twitch.
People are really digging this apparently.
They're like the gates are open.
It looks really good, I have not finished the first story movement of Destiny, I'm still working my way through it, I have a huge stack of shame.
That I need to finish.
But people are really apparently having a great time with this.
So I'm not a big Destiny player but I;m hearing good things.
I'm a console player so unfortunately I don't get to experience Destiny.
Huge bummer, because I've played the demo on my 360, my old, little, rusty 360.
And it's quite good,
It was really cool but I just
Bring it to PC!
This is like a perfect PC game!
Some people would argue, no, it's a perfect console.
But no it's a-
I've got a controller for my PC.
Very very true.
I use the XBox 360 controller, so.
So that's alright, and then we've got some movies coming out this week.
Tomorrowland comes out this week.
You already saw it, so here's your review.
I have seen it, here's my review.
It is a movie that is by Brad Bird, who if you didn't know has also made The Incredibles and The Iron Giant, amongst other fine retro-futurism themed films.
My big thing is that Brad Bird and I share a common love of an optimistic future.
And this movie, Tomorrowland, has that kind of as its central tenet.
Tomorrowland is kinda the MacGuffin in the move.
One of thing's that it's not getting great review.
So I'll put this right out there.
There are a lot of critics who are not into this.
I didn't like it.
I thought it was a little uneven.
And I don't disagree with that.
I think that there are some third act issues I think that I would love to have changed.
But generally speaking, I loved the message of this movie so much, even though it was a little heavy handed, that I found it watchable, that I enjoyed it.
So for me, it was like, I really liked this movie because it spoke to me personally, on a deep level, because of how much I love this sorta optimistic look at the future.
But what would other people?
tell people why they should see it or shouldn't see it.
You should see it if you love the idea of a, if you miss sorta the nostalgia of positive Utopian futures, like the Jetsons.
Here, I'll just sum up what you said.
You said, if you like the concept of this show And kind of what we intend to present, then you're going to love this movie.
You like this movie.
Because it's all about the positivity and where the positive angles that all of technology is going and the things it means to us and all the positivity.
That's pretty much it.
I was waiting for you to get to that.
I mean really it's optimism about the future.
[CROSSTALK] If you have optimism about the future this is, you will enjoy this movie.
It is watchable.
I'm not saying it's the greatest movie I've ever seen.
Because I saw Mad Max last weekend, but.
It is a good movie that I enjoyed and I feel as if I had or knew children, if I knew any children I would take them to go see that.
It's going to be a good family movie.>>Snatch some kids and go take them to the movie.
You interviewed Brad Bird.
I did, I interviewed Brad Bird in a junket about EPCOT, which Cale and I are very big Disney fans and we're very big Walt Disney fans and I got to ask him a couple of questions so we will actually be pulling that out-
Tomorrow on the show
Tomorrow on the show, okay.
Tomorrow on the show.
I wish it was today but we, there were some approvals that I needed to get.
From Brad Bird.
Well yeah, from Disney and then also from my boss.
So, our boss.
She has to approve it before it gets on the show.
Yeah, Laura CNET, as we call her.
What's up Laura?
So anyway, Tomorrowland comes out, and then also movie I missed last week and I felt really bad because I love this movie, I loved the first one.
Pitch Perfect 2 was out last week, but Look, if you didn't see it, which a lot of people did.
It made a bunch of money.
Go see it.
60 million, I think?
Yeah, close to 70.
Close to 70, yeah.
69 point something million.
So it did very very well this last weekend.
But I will go see it and I also, you have a friend in this movie.
Flulah's in this movie.
My friend Flulah.
I love it.
I can I can't wait to see it, he's been doing a lot of press around,
He's very excited about it, he looks snazzy on the red carpet and everything.
No offense Anna Kendrick, I would go see if for Flula.
See it for Flula, you can put that right on the box.
That's a full quote, that's a full quote.
So that's new releases.
Which now we can get, finally, to the user feedback about the VR suit from last week.
I don't even know what you're talking about.
It's been a million years ago, so let's take user feedback.
Yeah, the VR suit.
I don't even remember talking about it.
All right, so, to refresh your memory and Khail's memory, we talked about the Tesla Suit, which is a suit that you wear in conjunction with VR that has these sort of bands.
On each of your arms, and-
Does heat and cool and haptic feedback and, like, all of this stuff, to get give you this-
Really kind of intense virtual reality experience.
So we asked you guys,
Would you dig this suit?
What would you, how would you use it?
What would you, what game, all that, how would you, how would you use it?
I put it together.
Neil wrote in and said that knowing "mm-hm" [LAUGH] when you heard the Tesla suit was machine washable.
Dirty minds like alike.
Khali tells it right.
And I again, and thought about it again when you were describing it.
I was just like, oh man, this is gonna a problem.
Richard wrote in two tweets.
He sent us two tweets.
He said, awesome but it would be fun to use as a prank on a friend passed out by playing Call of Duty.
His hash tag firefight, haha.
And then wrote, had to share that but the game I would love to play is Skryim diverse climate and terrain #adventure
You know this all sounds fun and good, you know, wouldn't it be cool to really experience Skyrim?
But it's freezing!
And then a dragon burns you-
No, that's bad.
See that's the thing, VR can only go so far before we're gonna hate it, so-
Well before it ends up being The Matrix where if you die in the game you die in real life.
Yeah, yeah, like I thought it would be fun but like
I don't know.
It's really hot,
So you could get radiation.
dry, radiation, thirsty-
[LAUGH] The tesla suit, fallout version, comes with plutonium embedded inside the band.
And it just lets out a little bit of radiation every time that you-
You can't get, go to the game.
No, no, you wouldn't be able to.
Alright, anyway, what else you got?
And then lastly, the Tesla suit dev team wrote to us and said-
Teslasuit comes as a full body smart morphsuit.
Thank you for the great exposure!
See you on Kickstarter.
So, they are-
That wasn't, you didn't answer the question.
No, but we talked about how it, remember I said, if it came with a morph suit, I think I would get it for her.
And so, they said, it does.
It does in fact come with the [INAUDIBLE].
So you can get it all together, all the pieces together, because remember they said they sold them in modules?
Oh yeah, right.
Maggie in a month.
So now I know what I'm getting [INAUDIBLE] for his birthday.
I wish they had answered the question though.
I wish they had [CROSSTALK] told us what they'd want to do with it.
We want to murder everybody.
No, it's like an evil villain.
It's like an evil villain, super villain like James Bond style.
They seem like very nice people.
Well, all super villains seem like very nice people at first.
That's what they want you think.
Not the Immortan Joe.
Okay, fair enough.
Well, we don't know how he started.
Maybe he seemed like a nice guy at first, I don't know.
Maybe when he was young, Immortan Joey, when he was little Immortan Joey.
Logan hasn't seen it, and maybe some people haven't either.
All right, fair enough.
But, yeah, that was our user feedback from last week, so I was
Glad we finally got to that TD VR suit, today TD paint, tell us what painting you'd go into.
And now it is time for a very special phonetagrapher of the day.
I don't want to frighten you, but today is phonetagrapher of the day.
The photo is coming from inside the house [LAUGH].
Don't look panicked.
The phonetagrapher is coming from inside the house, so.
This picture is from producer Logan.
[UNKNOWN] with his head.
Producer Logan went to Hangout Fest this week in Alabama and it's right on the beach.
And he had a great time going to a big old music festival.
And this is the view I think on the left from his beach house that he rented, which is a very Very nice view.
Yeah it's a nice house.
And a view that I would like very much.
Why didn't we go again?
Why didn't we go?
You were celebrating your birthday.
And I went to Drag Con.
You went to Drag Con and a concert.
And I went to a tiki bar.
I at least went to a concert.
Yeah and then you went to a tiki bar.
So then of course, we have actual producer, Logan.
So there he is, he does have a face.
You guys, he's not just a disembodied head.
Actually, that blue umbrella in the background is producer, Logan.
That's just some guy.
I like how it just looks like he went to a deserted Alabama, all by himself.
A deserted Alabama.
Yeah, like that's a great name for a band.
Yeah, but the.
Playing hangouts then.
[LAUGH] What Alabama shakes wasn't playing.
But apparently, according to producer Logan it was good, Right producer Logan?
It was awesome.
There you go.
It was awesome.
That is, you can put that again right on the box, hang out fest.
Write whatever, pull quote right from your website.
It was awesome.
It was very cool.
It was actually nice seeing a picture from one of us here.
Cause nobody know anything about our lives, or lives are sad.
And you don't get to see them.
But that's our phonetographer for today.
If you would like to send us your photography you can email us tomorrow at cnet.com.
You can also send us story ideas.
Tell us a little bit about your picture and what phone you took it on so that we can talk about you on the show.
And you can find us all over social media.
We'll talk about you behind your back, too.
We'll talk about you on social media, if you want.
You can hit us up.
We're Tomorrow Daily all over the internet.
Just look us up and if we're not there, sorry, I just can't get to every social network.
Just, I can't.
Producer, are you going to run into anybody on the show there?
No, not a one.
I assumed everyone was just like, cause you go to those fests, you kinda just like hang out.
Well, and also they probably just saw Logan and they were just like, oh my god, I don't want to say anything.
They just played it cool, just playing it cool.
Well, yeah, and producer Logan's head isn't like floating in the back all the time.
We're not gonna like, yeah.
If he was dressed up like Gangus, everybody would have known him.
That would've been awesome.
Why didn't you do that Producer Logan?
Had to get on a plane.
Anyway, also don't forget to follow us on our personal twitters, I'm @Khailanonymous.
I'm @Ashleyesqueda, and of course if you want to send anybody to the show you can just go to tomorrowdaily.com, it's super duper easy.
That is it for the show.
From all three of us and Producer Logan here in beautiful Los Angeles television city, that is it for Tomorrow Daily.
We'll be back with the weird, wonderful science fact, science fiction blowing up in your face tomorrow, but until then be good humans.
We'll see you guys next time.
We say goodbye to the show by toasting the future (Tomorrow Daily...
