A look at Cisco's Android tabletCisco's Kathy English shows CNET's Ina Fried an early prototype of Cisco's Cius tablet, a device aimed at businesses that will start shipping early next year.
I'm Ina Fried with CNET. I'm here at the HealthCamp SF Conference ahead of the Health 2.0 Conference. I'm here With Cathy English who is one of the people involved in Cisco's healthcare practice and we have an exciting gadget with us. What's this, Cathy? -Thank you. This is our new Cius, C-I-U-S, so, come and see us, and it's a device that is IP enabled, that also supports our capability of transmitting video. It runs on the Android operating system so you can talk on the phone, you can use your speakerphone, all enabled through the computer, and display data results that might come from applications that are created here in the center portion where our screen is. We know that in healthcare, we need to have a mobile offering so our physicians might start with talking on the phone, having a videoconference with their Telepresence with the nurse, and then the nurse might tell the doctor, "I need you to come see this patient." The doctor wants to continue his work, all the doctor does is lift up the removable video piece and continue working and walking down the hall, connecting with the Wi-Fi as appropriate when you transfer between access points. -So this is a pretty slim Android tablet here. It's part of an overall system, it's not designed to work primarily on its own but used in conjunction with the device but it runs on Wi-Fi when it's outside of-- when you lift it up. -Exactly, and it's designed for the enterprise so it has all of Cisco's technology for security and secure actions within the enterprise infrastructure and system. It has a camera built on the back so if I'm having a video conference on the front portion with the nurse as a physician and the nurse identifies that she wants to show something to the physician and the patient, she simply takes a picture and that picture is immediately available to the doctor. -And healthcare is just one of the areas. Obviously, that's what you specialize in-- -Yes-- -And one of the promising areas but Cisco is looking to market this broadly to the enterprise. -We are seeing a lot of interest in manufacturing, in financial services, in retail where you need to have secure transactions and protect your infrastructure and firewall within your enterprise. -And this is gonna be available sometime next year? -Beginning of next year. We're just now getting our initial deliveries and we're starting some pilots. We have a number of healthcare pilots identified as well as other industries and we expect it to be ready for first customers shipping in the beginning of the calendar year. -Thanks.
