Toshiba Camileo X-Sports action camera takes on GoPro

The gnarly Toshiba Camileo X-Sports action camera hits the slopes in HD this winter to rival GoPro.

BERLIN -- Did you see that sick switch-frontside double cork? Never miss another gnarly moment on the slopes, the waves, or on your commute with the Toshiba Camileo X-Sports action camera, a new rival to GoPro.

The X-Sports action camera gets radical at tubular technology show IFA 2013. It's a tiny camera that sits on your helmet or about your person, recording your adventures in crisp high definition.

The X-Sports shoots 1080p video at 60 frames per second, courtesy of a 12-megapixel CMOS sensor for high-resolution still snaps. It goes on sale in Europe during the winter season and costs 249 euros (£210).

The camera is drop-proof up to 1.5m, so it can fall off your head without taking damage, unless you're very tall or standing on the shoulders of a large penguin. And it comes with a waterproof casing that keeps the camera dry up to 60m deep.

On the back of the X-Sports is a 2-inch LD screen. It also comes with a wrist-worn remote control with easy-to-press outsized buttons, so you can still take charge of the camera even when it's clipped to your helmet or when you're wearing gloves.

Just as you have an armoury of tricks to choose from when snowboarding, surfing, or commuting, the X-Sports has a range of options up its wetsuit sleeve. You can fire a burst of up to 30 photos per second, record a time-lapse video, or snap photos even when you're recording video to freeze any particularly rad moments.
