The Good Very small; USB extension cord; up to 1GB of storage; long warranty.

The Bad Windows 98 systems must restart after first use; limited security options.

The Bottom Line Though it gets an honorable mention for its small size and wide range of capacities, the Transcend lacks the capabilities of its competitors.

7.0 Overall

The Transcend USB flash drive is one of the smallest keychain drives we've seen, at about 2.8 by 1 by .5 inches. Furthermore, it comes in a cornucopia of capacities: 16MB ($35), 32MB ($49), 64MB ($69), 128MB ($99), 256MB ($189), 512MB ($329), and even 1GB ($846). Though it's small enough to squeeze into even the most crowded USB port, the Transcend includes a USB extension cord. It supports Windows 98, Me, 2000, and XP, as well as Mac OS 9 or later, but if you're on Windows 98, you must install a driver and reboot the first time you use the device.

The Transcend's features are limited. There's no password protection, though you do get a simple write-protection switch on the device. It won't keep away prying eyes, but it can save your data from being accidentally overwritten.

If you need help with the drive, you have a number of options. Transcend offers a long, two-year warranty, and toll-call tech support is available Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. PT. On weekends, you can e-mail techsupport@transcend.com. The company's site is a little tricky, but you'll find drivers and other info on the drive in the form of a few FAQs and downloads.

The Transcend USB flash drive is a small keychain that thinks in terms of big capacity. But it fails to match the features found in lower-priced competitors.
