Motorola Flipout

Nokia 7705 twist

Casio G'zOne Ravine

RIM BlackBerry Style

AT&T's Motorola Flipout continues the strange tradition of square phones. It has a roomy keyboard, though the display is too small for a smartphone.

We said the same thing when we reviewed Verizon's square Nokia 7705 Twist last year. It's also great for texting, but the small display doesn't lend itself well to multimedia. And don't forget that both devices have swivel designs. Swivel handsets were popular several years ago, but they're pretty rare today.

The rugged Casio G'zOne Ravine for Verizon Wireless is hardly the prettiest phone around. It can take quite a beating, though, and you can dunk it in water.

The Ravine's polar opposite is the LG dLite for T-Mobile. It has blinking lights and a cartoonish wallpaper, and it comes in electric blue or bubblegum pink.

Sprint's RIM BlackBerry Style is the last handset on the list. Though it isn't so strange from the outset, it is one of the very few smartphones with a clamshell design. We thought the keyboard is a bit flat, but the handset provides all the usual BlackBerry functionality. It's available in steel gray and royal purple for Verizon Wireless.
