Distance and accuracy

360 degrees

S-band and X-band

The U.S. Navy's requirements for the new Air and Missile Defense Radar (AMDR) call for a suite that includes S-band radar (for long-distance scanning), X-band radar (for accuracy), and a radar suite controller.

The new AMDR system is intended to provide a wide detection range and much more accuracy than legacy technology.

Because the system will include four S-band and three X-band radars, it should offer the Navy 360 degree coverage from a single Arleigh Burke destroyer.

The S-band and X-band radars work in tandem for scanning long-range distances and for accuracy in detecting inbound ballistic missile threats.
