Think you'll be able to plug the new PlayStation VR headset into your PlayStation4 and immerse yourself in new and alien worlds? Prepare to be disappointed, according to Edge Magazine, which cites an anonymous industry source.
"PSVR was going to be terrible on a [launch] PS4," says an unnamed chief technical officer working in the industry and quoted by Edge. "It was going to be truly awful. Something a bit more powerful starts to bring VR into range. If you want to deal with crazy requirements for performance in VR, you absolutely have to do this."
The use of the verb "was" is causing a bit of a kerfuffle in its own right, since no one can be sure which version of the PlayStation console the anonymous CTO is talking about. It's also not clear if the CTO works for a direct competitor.
Sony didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
Sony is expected to release it $399 PlayStation VR headset in October. When it does, it will take on headsets from Facebook's Oculus, HTC's Vive and Google's Daydream mobile VR platform.
