Where will outsourcing take us?

In response to the Perspectives column written by Declan McCullagh, "Vox populi on tech outsourcing":

It seems to me that the main problem is that no one thought about how easy it would be to send service sector jobs overseas with the advent of broadband Internet communications. Nor have they thought about the implications of that simple fact.

Sure, the economics make sense, at least superficially. Almost any pencil-pushing job that does not require face-to-face contact can now be performed remotely and more cheaply than at home. So now it's the intelligentsia, the college-educated elite who discover what lunch pail workers have known for years.

It is the very nature of broadband communications that poses a new and unprecedented dilemma. Almost any form of desk work can be exported to cheaper markets. As manufacturing has already largely gone that route, we must ponder where all this will leave us.
