VMware ships software for securing PCs

Firm starts selling tool to help customers lock down computers so people can't print, copy or transfer data unless authorized.

VMware, which sells software to let multiple operating systems run on the same computer, has begun selling a new tool to help customers lock down computers so people can't print, copy or transfer data unless authorized. The software, called the Assured Computing Environment, costs $99 per computer and also requires a $795 administration package.

In addition, VMware, acquired last year by storage specialist EMC, had revenue of $71 million in the fourth quarter of 2004, a 159 percent increase over the year-earlier period.
