Vivendi sends Web visitors backstage

Vivendi Universal's online division has unveiled a new service, dubbed Backstage VIP, that gives music fans free access to features such as games, videos, remixes or ring tones. Vivendi Universal Net USA said people who purchase a copy of a Backstage VIP-enabled CD can access the features by inserting the disc into a CD-ROM drive and visiting the Backstage VIP Web site or using a link provided on the album. When the CD is verified through VUNet USA's recognition software, the visitor can register to become a Backstage VIP. At the end of last year, French media giant Vivendi formed VUNet USA to gather the company's music, games and educational Web sites under one umbrella. The company tapped Robin Richards, chief executive of MP3.com, to head the Los Angeles-based unit.
