Digital ad spending will reach $140 billion this year, accounting for more than 25 percent of the global total for the first time, according to a new report from researcher eMarketer.
Mobile ads will make up $33 billion of the total digital ad-spending, or about 24 percent. Mobile is the major growth market and will be up by 85 percent over 2013.
The report, released Wednesday, notes that total ad spending in the US alone is expected to reach about $180 billion this year, making up nearly one-third of the worldwide total of $545 billion. The US spending is the highest per capita globally, with advertisers shelling out about $565 per person in the United States.
China will be the second-biggest ad spender in total, with advertising there expected to reach $49 billion this year -- though it amounts to just $37 per person.
As far as per-capita spending, Norway will be No. 2 at $539 per person, with Australia not too far behind. Canada and Sweden round out the top five, with the UK coming in seventh at a mere $367 (£214) per person.
The lowest per-capita numbers in the eMarketer study came from India, with a mere $5 per person spent on ads.
