I used to spend hours on Ultima Online not knowing what the heck I was doing and dropping out every time my landline even thought about ringing. It was my introduction to MMORPGs, and I shudder to think how many hours I've spent on them since.

As such, it has a special place in my heart — and those of many gamers, whose first real taste of RPGs, both online and off, came through the franchise.

Ultima Forever: Quest for the Avatar looks to bring back that online experience in a cooperative action RPG. You will meet other players in city hubs, and team up to complete quests and raid dungeons.

The storyline harks back to the original style of the games, as evidenced by its name and story (just compare the art for the game above with the box art for Ultima IV):

Set twenty-one years after the events of Ultima IV, the world of Britannia is slowly being engulfed by the Black Weep. It is a faceless plague that consumes the spiritual, instils fear in the valorous and corrupts the honourable. Lady British has called forth for heroes like you to help save the world before it is consumed by the endless dark. It's up to you and your fellow players to help save the land. Delve into this expansive saga as you search for a cure to the Black Weep, and meet many of Britannia's inhabitants along the way. Choices are a big part of the experience in Ultima Forever: Quest for the Avatar, and decisions should be made wisely as they may have a later impact.

Ultima Forever: Quest for the Avatar is due out for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch sometime in Q2 2013. Find out more info on the official website, or sign up to the game's Facebook page for ongoing information.
