A DIY kit lets you turn anything you like into your very own drone, provided it is light and balanced enough.
Wouldn't it be great if you could make your very own levitating tray to carry your snacks, or a hovering sunshade for hot days? A new kit by Dutch designer Jasper van Loenen lets you turn any flattish object into your very own drone.
Called Drone It Yourself, the kit consists of easy-to-assemble clamps, motors and a controller, 3D printed using ABS. You attach the motors to the clamps and the clamps to your object to have it hovering in next to no time.
Advanced users, van Loenen said, can even modify the existing designs by making their own custom clamps and add-ons.
Alas, the kit isn't available for sale, but if you have access to a 3D printer, van Loenen has made the 3D STL files (zip download) and parts list available for free online. In the video below, you can see the kit levitating a bicycle wheel, a computer keyboard, a boogie board and a telephone.
We're still not sold on the flying cat, though.
