Toga! Toga! Toga!

Despite the fact that the stiff white-boy stuffed shirts at Big Blue got their decades mixed up, the IBM bash was the place to be in Vegas on Sunday night.

Comdexees let loose tonight as they threw off their street clothes (literally) and tied one on--sheet, that is--for IBM's toga party. In fact, those who were too shy to strip looked a little out of place.

Despite the fact that the stiff white-boy stuffed shirts at Big Blue got their decades mixed up, the IBM bash was the place to be in Vegas on Sunday night. The 1980s toga-themed party featured the funkin'est 1970s cover band around. Boogie Knights laid a scorching repertoire of groovin' tunes on an audience who could actually remember how to "do the Hustle." But if the funkadelic vibes, the band's far-out Afros, and skin-tight bell bottoms didn't make a few IBM foot soldiers a little uncomfortable, their off-color between-set remarks sure made some women in the room squirm, and not with delight.

After a long, hard day of dodging fellow geeks in the street, $3 all-you-can-eat buffets, and Elvis look-alikes, it was time for a drink. When they weren't slurping down oysters, shrimp, dolmas, and roasted lamb, barstool philosophers weaved around the room in their party gimmes, a pair of IBM-logoed Teva sandals. (Isn't that a '90s thing?)

Some little Caesars, we heard, were searching for those CNET people who they heard were doing "unshenshored" party coverage. So we are, but the Comdex war stories we were told were too good and too many for the party page. Check out our Top Ten Outrageous Comdex Stories on Monday.

We spoke to a lot of drinking geeks, uh, Greeks, even though the IBM party cops initially barred the way. "No cameras," came the first command from Big Blue. As the drinks began to flow, though, the party patrol relented. "You understand. We don't want any pictures of IBM drunks to appear in the papers," said one pooper. Too bad.
