This $1.5 million Star Trek home theater is Trekkie heaven

A millionaire's mind-boggling Star Trek-themed theater took four years to build.

What do you do if you have an extra $1.5 million laying around and a passion for Star Trek as expansive as space itself? You spend four years building a home theater that looks like the USS Enterprise and fill it with reclining seats and a pair of Spock's pointy ears.

Businessman Marc Bell took The Wall Street Journal on a tour of the custom, 11-person theater in his $35 million Boca Raton, Florida, home, pointing out details like twinkling overhead lights reminiscent of space, an impressive supply of movie snacks and $1 million worth of memorabilia spanning costumes and a statue of a Borg.

It's a jaw-dropping paean to the Star Trek universe, with tech to match. Hydraulics embedded in the flooring shake the room to match collisions, and movie theater-quality speakers handle whole-room sound. Bell told the Journal he's planning to upgrade his current JBL sound system to Dolby Atmos, which has ceiling speakers designed to make audio more immersive. Next up, a cutting-edge 4K projector.

Bell won't be watching the latest Star Trek film, "Star Trek Beyond," from his theater (he rents out a commercial theater instead), but after its first theatrical run, I'd bet he and his family will settle into those plush chairs to relive it again and again.
