"Every time I think it couldn't get more extraordinary it surprises me..." The Doctor is back in action in a trailer for series 9 of "Doctor Who", and he's bringing along "Game of Thrones" star Maisie Williams as a mysterious new character.
It's Comic-Con in San Diego, California.and became a huge hit once again. The show, which currently stars Peter Capaldi as do-gooding time traveller the Doctor, and Jenna Coleman as his companion Clara, is now a global hit. The trailer for the new season was debuted in the US at sci-fi and fantasy convention
The trailer seems to focus on eyes: there's a couple of close-ups of eyes, there's some glowing eyes in the dark, there's the reflection of an eye in a mirror, and what appears to be a monster with blacked-out eyes. Plus Capaldi's infamous "attack eyebrows", as the show refers to them, are seen over a pair of sunglasses.
While he's rocking the shades, the Doctor straps on a guitar and rocks out. That moment harks back to Capaldi's time singing in Scottish punk rock band The Dreamboys, which also had future comedian and chat show host Craig Ferguson on drums.
Also in the trailer is the usual carnival of monsters new and old, including a Dalek and a Zygon. Last season's chief villain Missy, played by Michelle Gomez, appears too -- but surely the scariest thing in the trailer is the sight of the usually dapper Doctor in a t-shirt and hoodie.
The trailer reserves a special place for Maisie Williams, best-known for playing Arya Stark in fantasy potboiler "Game of Thrones". Details of Williams' role are under wraps, but it seems she and the Doctor are old acquaintances. Looking at her scarf and ruffled cuffs, she looks like she might be playing a highwaywoman, but that's just a guess.
The first episode of the new series, "The Magician's Apprentice", written by Steven Moffat, will air on 19 September.
