Sun licenses NCD network technology

Network Computing Devices licenses its PC-Xware networking technology to Sun Microsystems for use in Sun's network connectivity suite.

Network Computing Devices (NCD) has licensed its PC-Xware networking technology to Sun Microsystems for use in Sun's network connectivity suite.

Sun will incorporate NCD's technology into the Solstice Network Client intranet networking solution from its subsidiary SunSoft. The bundle will be sold to corporate users who need to connect their Unix workstations and servers to the massive Intel-based PC desktop market.

PC-Xware will essentially allow anyone to access and manipulate Unix programs with a Windows-based computer, according to Clive Prout, director of Windows product marketing at NCD. Users can also access programs remotely.

Functionally, PC-Xware will replace PCNFS, SunSoft's most widely distributed product. "PC-Xware is the next generation of PCNFS," he said.

Sun licenses similar technology to Novell for its LAN Workplace bundle.
